I am trying not to acquire a bunch of new crap, since I have too much equipment + electronics as it is.
Anyone know of a good place that can convert VHS to digital? I'd be content with CD, although DVD would obviously be preferred.

I called Kinko's but they charge $20/VHS, which is outrageous.
Anyone know of anywhere that will do it for something... reasonable?

I had some Digital8 put on DVD by a local shop for me and they charged me about $20 a tape. I think that's the going rate.

That's about the going rate, I'm actually surprised it's that low.

You said no more gear, but the Dazzle-thing is $50 for the basic, or $80 for the Delux. Obviusly you'd need to have more than a couple of tapes to make it worthwhile.

If you are looking for a plug-and-play kind of thing, you could also investigate a standalone DVD recorder. A friend of mine bought one for doing this type of thing, since he's not a computer dork and didn't want to mess around with things like DVD authoring software. It basically functions like a VCR - get the source going, hit record, wait for the source to finish, hit stop.

You could probably buy a cheap DVD recorder, record all your media, then sell the recorder on eBay or something and recoup at least half the cost.

i was looking into this for my dad who wants to do something similar. i found this on newegg:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832201024

from what i understand you plug the VCR into the included video capture device and use the software to rip and burn it to whatever.
