But anyhow, yeah the controls in this game frustrate me: I always change the key bindings to use the numpad. Doing so, I always use keypad enter as my "use" key. But not in FC2. You can't map it. Go ahead, try it. You can't.
And even if I find a different key to use, even if I manually unbind everything else from the numpad... it still seems to have those keys reserved. For some reason.
Aside from that, yeah, FC2 is one hell of a game.
Here's the problem, though: Direct X 10 mode actually runs 10%-15% better than Direct X 9 mode. That's an extremely noticeable amount, and it's the first game to have better performance in DX10 than in DX9.
The only problem so far that's really, really fucked DX10 mode is the memory leak some people are having with it (me included). This has been a problem since launch, and Ubi is still choosing to ignore it for whatever reason.
There are ways to fix the full-screen thing, but I don't remember them at the moment. Later today, I'll look them up.
If by some, you mean all. It seems pretty rampent.
I love this game. But it always crash after some time, like 1 hour or so. Maybe more.
Maybe it's the memory leak? I have DX10 on.
BTW, I have no trouble with resolutions in modern games, on my not very old LCD.
Yeah, that's the memory leak.
If you guys know how to use the Windows Performance/Resource Monitor, and want to be sure you have the memory leak and not some other problem, you can record your RAM usage while you play in DX10 mode. It should very slowly crawl up, and then the game should crash as soon as it reaches 60%.

Where is said configuartion file located? I cannot find one.
Man I bought a shotgun for my first weapon and was amazed that it actually worked like a shotgun. As in I can shoot dudes from quite a ways away and still kill them.
Is it a big deal that my initial buddy died? I didn't even notice it happened. I went to save him, and I thought I did, but apparently he got shot or I shot him during the fire fight and didn't notice.
It didn't say anything about it either, but he's crossed off the list now. Am I screwed out of buddy missions now? Or will someone replace him? You can only have a maximum of 3 buddies ever right?
Really, the shotty is good? Awesome. I never bothered carrying it. I do love the RPK-SVD combo a lot though, it's hard to beat.
Should I get the upgrades for them (I already have the accuracy upgrade for the RPK)? I never had trouble hitting the targets with the unmodded SVD or reliability problems with either weapon. I just make a point of getting new weapons after a while, before they go bad. It's free, anyway.
What about the stealth suit? Is it worth the wooping 45 diamonds? And the car upgrades? I'm afraid to buy most stuff that aren't guns, they don't seem worth it. Except the weapon crates.

If you like and understand the stealth gameplay of Far Cry 2 then yes, it is worth it. Makes it much harder for enemies to see you when you're crouching still in grass
And I do enjoy the pump shotgun, partially because it is effective, but mostly because it has a very satisfying "chick-chick" sound
That's basically my barometer for how good a video game shotgun is
This game is seriously fucking awesome. I love my AK, Grenade Launcher, PK machine gun combo. Although I'm thinking of switching out for a Draganov once I have enough diamonds to buy it since the PK rarely gets used.
Of course I think that might be a bit overpowered, but whatever it will be fun.

I always went in with the heavy machine gun and sniper combo. If they got to close I sprayed them with the HMG but they never got the chance with the sniper beading them out.

The Draganov will replace your AK, not your RPK.
Yeah I know that's what I meant to imply, but it was worded a little weird. Since I'm running around with an AK/PK I mostly just use the AK since I can shoot people from farther away and it's more accurate. The PK is really just a backup if I run out of ammo.
My set up was Mac 10/Draganov/Dart Gun for maximum sniping and a magazine to the face for anyone who got close.
I'm not playing this again untill I get it to run fullscreen though. The great atmosphere is completely ruined when you can see your fucking desktop icons.
Meh. I like this game, but there are some things that make me angry.
First of all, where the hell are the random critters? Are there no lions, or anything in africa anymore? Two, why is it when I let off a sniper shot from over a thousand yards away, EVERYONE knows where I am?
Three, why is the sneak attack machete not an insta kill o.o
I was bugged by the lack of Lions and Elephants and shit too, but then I started to run into Zebras and goats. So they put something in. I don't know that Lions and Elephants would be that close to a warzone though, I think they'd take right off.

Those out of the way, this game kicks ass.
They need to detect you because it would be pretty lame if you could snipe everyone with impunity.

But I mean seriously. I should be able to snipe 2-3 while they look for me, and when one spots me hiding in a bush, or in a tree, or above on a cliff, then they can shoot.

You need to relocate when sniping
I've sniped entire guard posts and compounds just by shooting, running to a seperate piece of cover, and shooting again
Also, being on a cliff doesn't activate the cover system. You can hide by crouching in tall grass pretty effectively, but forget about sniping and hiding on a rocky cliff unless it's night and you're using the dart gun.

You can snipe off entire bases, you just have to understand the cover system. Shooting your gun gives away your location, enemies will go to that location. If you can get into full cover and move, enemies will not know where you are, and you can resume sniping. You must retain a significant distance for all this to work.
Yeah I just picked apart the junkyard with my sniper rifle. I killed a bunch of men just by running around it and hiding behind things. You can tell when they've lost you because they start saying, "where is he?" and what not.
So are all my buddies doomed to die?
I just did another side mission and my buddy got downed again. It seems every time I do one they decide to go do something stupid and it's impossible for me to get to them before they get downed and since three downs means they don't get back up I'm not sure I want to take another side mission.
I know they'll be replaced, but at this rate I won't have any buddies left before the end of the game.

Doing a mission with a buddy guarantees a super shitty rescue at the end. Yes, its always possible to rescue them. No, its not easy. In some cases, I had to load like 10 times to get him out alive.
There are some glaring problems with FC2 I have found. First off, Missions take forever because you have to drive everywhere and along the way all the guard posts respawn and ensure that between every mission you have to go to an armory and replace your weapons and fill up on health syrettes and all. It doesn't make for fun play when you are instructed to go blow something up here, and you have to spend 20minutes to just get there and find that the objective is also like the guard posts, except that it is a train yard or something. I have no motivation to finish the game.

Yeah people constantly say this. I wonder if anyone will ever be able to talk about this game without bitching about checkpoints.
Personally it doesn't bother me. Bus stops/taking the river helps avoid most check points and a couple grenade rounds or a sniper rifle takes care of the rest. I actually like that I have to think about how I'm going to get to the objective. Sometimes cool stuff happens on the way, and it's that much more immersive.
The game has a different pace than your normal shooter. Obviously some people won't enjoy different, but I think they're pushing the genre forward and trying something new. Also it's a lot of fun to blow shit up in this game.
Yeah of course it could be better. But all games have flaws. I'm excited to see what Ubi Montreal is doing with their next project, they're just so good with exotic locales, and I hope a Far Cry 3 is in the works somewhere.

They did kind of miss out on the obvious and settled for less, so I feel its fair to point them out.
Checkpoints themselves didn't bother me. Just the fact that there aren't any factions, just them and you.

Man this is exactly how I felt about the game when I first started.
All, "God damn, I just cleared this post out five minutes ago." "God damn, why can't I drive ten seconds without another jeep chasing me down!" "God damn, I have to fill up on shit constantly."
The game doesn't magically get better at any of those things, but most people will. I had to gradually force myself to keep playing the game just out of the idea that I didn't want the money spent to be just a waste, and eventually it grew on me.
One of the big tricks is to walk more than drive. When I'm driving it's because I know that there's no patrol vehicles around, and I know exactly where I'm going. Not only does it help you get the jump on the bad dudes, but you can run into diamonds or other goodies while out in the middle of some place a vehicle wouldn't be able to get to. The refill after every mission is more just a precautionary measure now that I'm better at the game, but once you have some weapons you really enjoy then you'll want to make sure that you always have them at top condition and max ammo. Also mentioned was the bus system. The bus system is God. The best part is, this helps with the refill system. On both the southern and northern maps, there is at least one bus stop that you can use to get close enough to reach a gun shop without running into any enemies, making the shop visits pretty painless.
There are tons of little tricks in addition - like driving around the map on the outskirts of the desert to reach a place instead of taking the roads, managing the night/day cycle for the method you want to use for a mission, and really just memorization of key areas.
This is long-winded as fuck but this game has just blown me away with how much I enjoy it now, and it's rough start turns away quite a few people I imagine. I couldn't stand to play it for an hour at a time when I first got it, and now I'm currently typing this with my game on pause, grabbing a snack while I'm just down-river from my next big objective in the midst of a 3-hour-and-counting session.
I'm also constantly impressed by the character animations. Good animations will keep me playing a game for a long time, (I beat Assassin's Creed in a weekend because I loved jumping on dudes and spiking them in the throat) and the way your character moves around, gets in vehicles, and performs surgery on himself is all fantastic.

See, I really liked the isolation that results from that dynamic. You can't rely on squad mates or other NPCs to help you out, except for your rescue buddy, which is really just a well designed "Continue" button.
I don't want to spoil anything, but they're not gone.
You're also putting too much emphasis on the importance of buddies. Fuck the relationships. They don't mean anything. You can blow your buddy's brains out and it doesn't matter. You'll get a new one. The important thing is doing the buddy missions to unlock new shit at your safe houses. Upgraded vehicles. Weapon and ammo crates. That sort of thing. It's good to do the buddy missions (fuck yeah, truck with a grenade launcher!), but the buddies themselves don't actually matter that much.
You really should continue the game because it picks up from that point on. Especially since you loved your buddies so much, you'll find the climax of the game particularly relevant to your interests.
After sort-of fixing my crash bug (if you flip a toggle to allow vista to grant programs access to more than 2 gigs of memory, and then use a third party tool to modify the executable to access those large memory addresses, the game runs for 3 hours instead of 1), I ran into a new issue.
The door to Mike's Bar on the second half of the map is shut. It will not open. No matter what I do. I started a side mission, it locked shut, and now it won't ever open again. I need to go inside to complete a mission; won't open. I drop the mission, get a new mission, complete that new mission, and go back to the bar: still won't open.
Fuck me, man. What a piece of shit this game is. I finally give up. I really accepted every game play and design flaw and the general looseness of this game's assembly. I stood by it past those flaws.
BUT THESE FUCKING BUGS ARE INEXCUSABLE. It'll be a very, very long time before I buy another Ubisoft game again.
