But I'm not French, I'm Québécois. And there are no better lovers than the Québécois, provided we are not being distracted by poutine, beer, hockey or strippers.
So for a job, I am being asked to pick the two cities I'd like to work in from this list: Santa Monica, Kirkland/Seattle, New York, Boston, Chicago, Boulder, Pittsburgh, Irvine, Phoenix and Mountain View.
I believe those are all in the US, but I'm not sure (I've never even heard of Santa Monica, Boulder, Irvine or Mountain View). The only city in there that I've visited is New York. I know next to nothing about any of these cities.
So American [chat]ers, pick my future. Where do I want to work?
Your salary will go furthest in Phoenix. I'd steer clear of Pittsburgh, myself. Of those, I'd be most interested in Boulder (for a smaller city) and New York (for a big city).

Yeah, but that would mean living in Phoenix. You couldn't pay me enough money to live in that shithole for an extended period of time.

I can't find my damn coursepack for my exam tomorrow, so I had to call the place and have a new one made. It won't be ready until 4 (hour from now). Grr.
I have an exam in two hours and I'm wasting time on the Sex Offender Registry looking for rapists and such in my hometown.
There are a lot.
There are a ton in my county, but only because the state sees fit to dump them all here after they're sprung. It sucks a big one.
The ones in my town appear to be the sort of shiftless vagrants, wandering around in a drunken (or drugged) stupor and beating and raping people, that seem to occur naturally in the area. The vast majority of them also appear to be specifically offenses against children, which further erodes my faith in humanity in general and the population of Rutherford County, NC in particular.
There have been a few set-top speaker arrays produced lately that shoot your multichannel sound in beams off at the points on your wall or ceiling that would correspond to surround speakers.
This sounds like a great idea
This is one They're not cheap at the moment, but if the tech takes off it should come down in price. The DSP work isn't all that difficult, especially with low-bandwidth stuff like audio.
How do you tell it where to aim the different beams?
The product description sounds like it does a self-assessment by scanning around. I've heard of manually adjusting the direction though.
Yeah, I'm reading through -- the image at the bottom of the page is a really strange way to present what the sound is doing, though (on right):
I wonder if the depth of sound is the same as a traditional set up (with a subwoofer, etc)
Yeah that picture shows exactly what's happening from a physical point of view, what with the wavefronts overlapping to create a coherent beam. You can solve it with a wave equation as well. It's really not all that obvious though unless you've tooled around with the math.
Subwoofers are omnidirectional - the frequencies are generally either subaural or else their wavelength is so long that directionality is kind of meaningless as far as we can perceive, so there's no real point of focusing those frequencies into beams. As far as the spread-spectrum, the phase offsets have to be adjusted to account for frequency (it's something like a linear dependence IIRC), so it complicates the math a little but ultimately works out.

So I'm home, waiting for my French Chicken-in-a-Pot (poulet en cocette) to be done in a few hours. All snowed in with a bunch of movies to watch and a few vidja games to play. Life is good.

Man, if you think that's bad, you ain't seen nothin' yet; the city of Lakewood (which is itself only a few minutes drive from my present location) has decided that the vacant lot next door to the local elementary school will serve as the perfect place to house paroled sex offenders while they attempt to reintegrate with society.
At least the teachers won't be the only ones thinking of the children in that neighborhood, from now on.
EDIT: That's a terrible joke. But I find it hard to be light-hearted in a situation like this, where the people up on high are clearly out of their fucking minds to the point of needlessly endangering innocent lives.

At least until I have to walk the dog.
If you have a sufficiently small dog, you can just hold it out the window and squeeze. My cousin's Yorkie got that treatment when they were living in Canada.

If you had your posts per page set to the number god intended, you wouldn't be having this problem.

How does that have anything to do with you quoting two huge images?
Could be worse. You could be in Detroit.
There are a lot.

Richy, you should trade with me. Canada is the only place still remaining on my list that I can feasibly get to.
What did you find shithole-y about it?
I lived in the Phoenix suburbs for a number of years. Scottsdale, especially, was very nice.
All the restaurants and shops are chains, but I actually think it's a pretty nice place to live if you can deal with the climate.
I was being optimistic and assuming you weren't complaining about something on the previous page.

:P
Scary thing is Richy can actually do that.
