Ya, ya, I know G&T gets a thread like this every couple hours or so, but I need suggestions. Over this whole last generation I basically ignored everything that came out for the PS2 because I was completely uninterested in getting one. Now I have one for Guitar Hero and would like to know what I really need. I already have GH 1&2 and Shadow of the Colossus and that's it.
It is dirt cheap everywhere now (in the UK at least)
It is a scrolling beat em up/slow paced bullet maze shmup, set in alternate future neo-russia, with a damn cool art style, and fantastic co-op.
One of the most unique games from a pure gameplay standpoint I have played in ages.
Also I haven't played Shadow of the Colossus (yet! it's on it's way from Amazon right now!) but it is the psudo-sequel to ICO, which is a beautiful, beautiful piece of software, I am pretty sure it's existance is enough evidence to settle the issue of "Are games art?"

I picked up "The Bouncer" from a pawn shop several weeks ago because 1. It was by Square and 2. It was the first PS2 game I'd played or watched anyone play, and it seemed pretty good at the time.
Ugh, blagh. Terrible game. I only kept it for my collection, but man was it horrible. It took a lot of MGS to wash my eyes clean of that shit.

Hmm. Why all the props for GT3 and not GT4? I must say that I have come to really hate the way GT4 is as a "game." I really love to bomb around the Seattle track (or any of them, really) in a Shelby and stuff like that, but the challenges and races can be a real drag. The game's physics also feel dumb and worse than GT2 at times even with the aids turned off. Driving the Shelby feels awesome, like you're really pushing the car and trying to keep the ass end in the rear, but with some of the other cars it feels like you couldn't bring the rear out to save yourself. Like it snaps back into place or something. Is GT3 really better?
Black is indeed a great game. It looks amazing. However, I can't force myself to play it because of the Dual Shock - an absolutely god fucking awful controller for FPS games. No KB&M support, either. Sad. Wish I still had my Xbox.
Shadow of Rome is awesome minus the stealth levels, destroy-the-statues levels, and cheap ass pre-boss boss fights. Other than that, it's quite something. For instance, I used a scimitar and somewhat by accident sliced BOTH of a dude's arms off in one attack. He dropped to his knees and pissed himself. I showed him mercy by chopping his head off. I then threw my scimitar into the crowd, picked up the guy's severed head, and threw it at another dude's face. It's just too bad that I couldn't dual wield his severed arms. Ah, well.
God of War... don't let the hype lead you to believe this game is anything but a mindless and somewhat bland and repetitive button-masher.
That being said, Odin Sphere is a somewhat bland and repetitive button masher... kind of. But it's not mindless and I find myself strangely addicted to it. Worth a rent at least.

localized in 2001, i had never ever heard of it before stumbling across a used copy the other week. if you played Etrian Odyssey on the DS imagine that, only more so. its got nice 3d graphics (for a 2001 ps2 game), but all the dungeons are grid based and you play from a first person perspective. the combat plays out similarly to a Dragon Quest game (or again, EO... which was heavily indebted to the japanese Wizardry games so it makes sense). at the beginning theres not even an introductory anything, you show up in this ruined town and a mysterious guy says "meet me in the labyrinth" and you go and start hacking and slashing.
so yea, its pure unadulterated dungeon crawling. you can easily mess around and permanently lose a character, the in game map is only accessible through a spell or if you draw it out yourself (which doesnt work for the randomly generated levels anyway), the combat is fast paced and fun, etc... i dunno its pretty much my perfect RPG game. grind away, kill monsters, minimal bullshit to get in the way.

Don't get tekken 5, it's a horribly broken mess. What's more the characters that are "broken" are broken in that their cheap and unfair shit is ridiculously easy to do. Any of your friends could pick it up and be broken with them in a day, spoiling any casual fun you might think you'd get out of it.
I bought a ps3 specifically for Tekken 5 DR (think of it like vf:evo) just to get away from it (and so I could play with the latest version) so think of that when you digest that non recommendation.
I sold my tekken 5 on ps2 just the other week actually.
Morninglord on
(PSN: Morninglord) (Steam: Morninglord) (WiiU: Morninglord22) I like to record and toss up a lot of random gaming videos here.
Buy it, seriously. The SE edition is like, $20 now. I clocked two 2 99:99:99 saves, and only stopped because I lost the disc.
Should I just get that one and dispense with 1&2? Would it make any sense to me story wise if I haven't played the first two?
It would, being a prequel.
1 is arguably as good as 3, depening on point of view. It is also worth your time.
Avoid 2 like the over-cited plague.
If you enjoy 3, go ahead and pick up 1(that is, if you can stand the graphics drop).
I recommend MGS if you like a good storyline and fun gameplay, and SC3 if you want a casual fighter.
God Hand is sort of like DMC, so if you have a limited budget, look up videos on youtube or gametrailers and look for the one that is most appealing to you.
Devil May Cry has a dark setting with comedic undertones, and God Hand has a silly setting with hilarious undertones.
Ya SC3 is something I hadn't thought of... I have a GC and played a lot of SCII and really enjoyed it.
Edit: and I'll definitely look into DMC and God Hand.
God Hand has a deeper, more customisable and generally superior battle system, but is a little more difficult to get into.

Action Games: Devil May Cry - Somewhat frenzied, stylish action, good challenge than can be skullfully overcome, campy story doesn't take itself too seriously.
Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition - DMC on crack, inroduces various selectable, upgradeable fighting styles that add extra moves and change existing ones, plus on-the-fly weapon & gun switching for ridiculous combinations of stylish action. Wide selection of difficulties, lots of bonus content. I assure you that linked video could never be achieved through button-mashing.
God Hand: (videogaiden review already linked) Tough as nails, very refined 3rd person brawler. Tight controls. Awesome, customizeable moves. Over-the-top humor, enemies, and bosses. Slight post-apocalyptic wild-west/Fist of the North Star vibe.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistance - "Tactical espionage action" really does describe the game. Finally takes MGS back into the jungle, now with a camera that doesn't always face north, and more bonus material than you can shake a stick at. Fun online mode no longer has servers .
Monster Hunter - a thoughtful action game with some adventure elements. Well-defined silent role to play in a highly-developed pre-industrial hunter-gather civilization: the venerated hunter. Huge degree of equipment customization. Stylish yet realistic look, great attention to detail. Challenging in a fair way, player skill required. Hunt creatures from velociraptors to dragons the size of three train cars--as a mere human in top physical form. AI makes for rather believable and memorable critters (interspecies AI is nil though). Multiplayer shutting down at the end of 2007, quite a minus, however there is still a large & enjoyable offline game. Less diverse missions and structure than its expansions & sequels, but they're only available in English for PSP. Consistant treatment of light humor and thoughtful detail makes everything more satisfying (example: can humiliate monsters, killed monsters always look thoroughly dumb/trounced; victories all the sweeter for it). For some reason, no one knows about this series. To top it all off, this game's soundtrack is 100% CD-quality orchestrated audio, and incredibly epic.
Okami - Heavy Japanese mythology themed adventure/action. As the wolf avatar of the shinto god(dess) of the sun, bring the ancient land of Japan back to amazing, vibrant, woodblock-print-styled life after it's overrun by vivid, stylish devils and darkness. Creative "magic" system employs the "celestial brush". With one button and an analog sitck, paint symbolic gestures for a ridiclous array of effects; very intuiative to use.
Ok, so, I've never played a MGS game before. Can I just jump in to any point in the series or is there some point that I should definitely start at?
I would start with MGS3 Subsistence, and depending on how you feel about it, try maybe try MGS then MGS2.
IMO, if you look at either the story arc or the gameplay on their own, either one isn't good enough to warrant playing through the series today. And even together, I think if you missed out on the MGS train and didn't get invested in the story back when the gameplay wasn't so dated, you probably won't really "get" it now.
Unless you really love Japanese-ness, I guess. You'll just have to try it and see.
