I want to transfer a file from a Linux laptop on my network to a Windows desktop on my network. Is there a way I can do this very easily without setting up Samba and the like? Seems like quite a lot of hassle for just one file.

You asked for easily, I am going to suggest a USB flash drive thingy, unless the file is very large.

What about a Live CD? Most of those have SAMBA enabled and you can access local files.
