[Thrift On] Tales of Extrodinary Savings!

We've all had a "holy shit they're practically paying me to buy this" moment or two in our consumerism lifetime. I'm always one to believe that you should never pay for price for anything if you can help it, and love getting a good deal on stuff. For some reason I've always had good luck getting gaming stuff on the cheap.

What are some of the thrifty buys you've had over the years?

Shadow of the Colossus - $8: The game had honestly been out for a fucking month when I wandered into a neighborhood garage sale. I'm pretty sure the husband asked his wife to sell it, and she had no idea how much it was worth. It said $8 on the sticker, and I honestly felt like I was stealing as I gave her the cash.

Final Fantasy X-2 - $6 - I'm a huge Final Fantasy fan, but somehow I let this one slip through the cracks. This one supposedly is not worth much more than what I paid for it on eBay, but shit I'll take a $6 game any day of the week.

Nintendo Wii + Classic Controller + 4 GC Games + GC Memory Card - $200 My brother was lusting for an iPod Touch and this was his most disposable asset. This is more of a family discount than anything else but I wasn't going to complain.

My cousin also got Dragon Warrior (NES) for $0.99 when we were like 8 or 9 at a garage sale. He saw it first and got it. Son of a bitch. :x

    Good haul.

FFX-2 has the absolute best turn based battle system of any FF game. If you can handle the Pretty pretty princess dress up part of it, you'll enjoy it, otherwise you won't.

I got a box with three working Dreamcasts the other day for seven bucks. I had all the games that came with it though, but the controllers were like new.

I'm now up to about seven or eight copies of Jet Grind Radio. I guess a ton of people did eventually buy it when it was selling for a buck at Best Buy...

I don't have any particular moment of triumph that I can recall at the moment, but I'd just like to note that I fucking love searching the bargain bin for awesome games. Whose with me?

I got Way of the Samurai preowned for $10 and I've probably played it for over 40 hours. Actually, most of my 40+ PS2 games were preowned, I almost never pay full price for games. This could be why I don't buy many new games, I'm waiting for a couple years down the road when I can prance into any EBgames and drop $40 and come out with two or three games.

Outside of a few things I've won (Banjo-Kazooie, iPod nano (the new 4GB one just 2 weeks ago)), I haven't really had a great moment of savings related to video games..

I did get some Battletech CCG cards cheap though. I was buying a bunch of packs for friends (and myself) for Christmas and when I brought them up to the register (SoftwareETC at the time) the guy scanned it, scanned it again, cleared it, scanned it again. He then looked at me and said, "Well, I gotta sell it for what the register rings it up as I guess. That will be 15 cents." I said, What?
He clarified, "They're ringing up a penny each."
I told him to hold on, I'll be right back. I ran to the shelf where the whole booster box was sitting and dropped it on the counter. "I'll take these then too, and do you have any more in the back?"
He checked, but what they had out was the last of it (it was an over-full box where they had opened a new one and tossed the few extras from the old on it).

I ended up getting something like 40 packs of boosters for 43 cents or whatever. I was expecting to pay $3 a pack. :D

    I have some of those.

The game seemed interesting, but I never had anyone around to play it with, and honestly, I kinda hate games that use deck depletion as a win victory (well, as the sole win victory). It's like "Oh look at all these nice cards, too bad a missile hit 'me' and suddenly all my good shit is sitting in the 'graveyard' (or whatever), mocking me.

You all should be doing so, but in case you don't: CheapAss Gamer is the holy Mecca of thrifty deals. The amounts of money I've saved on games over the years is staggering. I was just mentioning in another thread about how I haven't paid full retail for a game in about six months -- I wrinkled my nose in disgust when a friend's longing got me to buy Call of Duty 4 at full price, but a week later I got it for $37.99 at Best Buy and will return the new one with the old receipt.

Speaking of Final Fantasies: Some Toys R Us locations are clearancing out copies of FF12 for a measly $5. I might even rebuy it at that price.

The only recent big score I got was my TV: a 40-inch 1080p Samsung LCD for $1,000 even and free shipping, thanks to a Thanksgiving Day sale. It retails for about $1,800.

EDIT: Oh! I did get two copies of Tomb Raider Anniversary for Wii on Amazon for $30 total, thanks to a lightning sale they were having. Traded one copy in, so my game was a cool $15 all said and done.

Yeah, I should probably actually visit CAG sometime.. I usually buy things at launch though if they are something I want and if I don't get them at launch then I wait until they hit $20.

I just thought of this and didn't want to throw a new thread out there.

Is there any rhyme or reason as to when games go into "Greatest Hits" mode? I never bought the original Guitar Hero, and it's been so long that I settled on just waiting until it became Greatest Hits. My guess is that companies just wait until the title cools off sales, but is there any other factor?

I'm also anxiously awaiting value titles to be released for the Wii, which might not be for some time.

I got a brown Zune 30 for like 60 bucks at TRU on black friday. I combined the sale with the gift card from buying SMG.

Then I had to wait a month before I could have it because it was for Christmas.

It used to be based on selling 500k or 1mil or whatever. Now it's just when they want to sell it cheaper. There's no real rhyme or reason to it. Don't ever expect a Nintendo game to drop to $30 within 3 years though, and never below $30. Ridiculous for those games, though I usually end up buying them for $50 at launch anyway.

There are some cheap titles for the Wii that are actually worth picking up too. But I wouldn't expect to see anything really drop until next year. In the meantime, Mercury Meltdown is good ($20), Sonic and the Secret Rings ($20-25) is decent, and Zack and Wiki is good, though not really a value-price at $40. There are some others I've forgotten too.

I saw Trauma Center a few weeks ago for $13 or $14 being cleared out at Target. I should have jumped on it then and there, but had just pre-paid for an ice fishing trip. Would have been castrated as soon as I walked in the door at home if I had bought it.
Maybe I'll go back today to see if I can find it.

That FFXII deal had me salivating until some bastard came in and bought all 20 copies of the game we had in stock and wouldn't leave one for me to buy.

I nabbed my wife's Pink DS that I got her for Christmas for a cool $99 while at work; a customer returned it, the box had been opened, but absolutely nothing inside had been touched, everything was pristine. I grabbed that sucker then and there. There's also the possibility of a Star Wars edition PSP that we had to gank the battery from for a customer who bought a psp and didn't have a battery in it (long story) being marked down for me to like $129, sans battery, of course.
I also bought Phantom Hourglass (full price) before I knew my wife was getting me the Zelda edition DS for Christmas (yeah, we both got each other DSes, now there are 4 in our house), and had purchased PH for my brother as well during the buy 3 get a 4th game free sale at TRU. I returned the copy I bought for him, and exchanged it for Mega Man ZX Advent, and gave him the copy of PH that came with my ds. Not exactly a deal, but thrifty for me!
