Adobe photoshop question(layers) -SOLVED-

Okay, lets say I'm playing in photoshop and I draw a circle in layer 1. Now I want to shade JUST the circle(which you can do by hitting the transparencies button). BUT instead of wanting to shade it on the same layer, I want to shade JUST the circle on a new layer. Does anyone know how would I go about doing that without using the magic wand tool?

Thanks.

    That's easy.
layer 1 (circle) use the magic wand and select the circle.

select layer 2 and make sure it's active.

    Shade.

    Done.

The selection doesn't care which layer you are in. So long as you are in layer one to select it, and in layer 2 to paste/paint/etc, the selection carries over.

I want to avoid using the magic want tool though, because I commonly draw things more complex than a circle and sometimes they have semi transparencies and it's basically a clicking game, and then an erasing game as I try to make sure it didn't go out of the lines.

I don't have Photoshop on my local machine so I'm gonna mess up the particulars, but this is the basic idea.

Under the "Select" menu go to "Load Selection". Under the menu pick "Layer 1 transparency." This will select everything on Layer 1 that isn't transparent, including partial transparency and everything. Assuming the circle is the only thing on Layer 1, you'll get just the circle selected. Once you have that selection, switch to Layer 2 (the selection remains selected including partial pixels) and then do your fill or manipulation.

Oh, I though you said you DID want to use the wand, sorry. wasn't reading closely enough.

I think if you hold control or alt (forget which) and click the layer, it selects anything on the layer. Not sure if you have anything else on layer one.

If you have a bunch of stuff on layer one with the circle, you are going to be forced to make a selection somehow. Either manually with the circle/pen/freehand/mask tool, or auto via the wand or select by color.

Awesome, that's exactly what I was looking to do. You're my new king.
