About to buy a PS3-Colossal mistake or great foresight?

I've been waiting for the HD/Blu-ray thing to break either way. It looks like it did. So I figured I may as well get something that has more than one use. I know there are probably threads like this, but what about my needs? Gaming websites are unbearable for me, I can't process info that comes from them.

So can you guys help me evaluate the decision? I know nothing about the platform.

Is a standalone blu-ray player a better buy?

What are the differences between the models? Will I regret buying the low end?

What games are can't miss that are out now? Probably only like one or two right?

What the hell is coming soon? Like in the next two months.

I enjoy Strategy games, like Disgaea, some JRPGS, but as far as RPG's go I prefer action RPGS. I also like quick fix games platformers and shit. Of late my favorite games have been Mario Galaxy and La Pucelle.

Warhams. Allatime warhams.

Oy. Look, here's the only question you need to ask yourself.

Are there games out for it RIGHT NOW that you want to play on it and make the purchase price worth it?

If no, don't buy it. If yes, buy it.

Not knowing what the hell you're going to play on the thing is a bad start. Don't force yourself to buy a game system (any game system) because you feel you should. Be genuinely excited about its current offerings.

Buying any of the systems is never a colossal mistake, as they all have or will eventually have some really good exclusive games.

Ratchet & Clank sounds right up your alley. You might enjoy Uncharted as well. I mostly got mine to play CoD4 with friends that have it on ps3.

As far as a blu-ray player goes, I've never seen a standalone. I have heard that the player in the ps3 is pretty good, however you may be unhappy with the fan noise. I have the 80 gig and mine is not that quiet in my living room. I hear the 40 gig is quieter because of the newer, smaller chipset.

The only game on my radar in the next couple months is Devil May Cry 4. But I haven't really been actively looking, as I have my hands full as it is.

edit: Also, anybody know when White Knight Story is supposed to come out? That looks like it will be a sweet action rpg.

Was in the same situation as you and I just bought a 40 gig. The Blu-ray player is very nice, and I only have UT3 for the PS3 so far, but that is very fun.

Also, my PS3 is dead silent. I don't know if it is because it is the 40 gig version but I've yet to hear any fan noise what-so-ever.

I'm always an advocate of this position; however, in the OP's case, if it's a choice between a standalone Blu-Ray player or a PS3, it might not be a bad idea to just go ahead and grab the PS3. I've seen several tests from A/V specific sites that say it's an excellent Blu-Ray player as compared to standalones, outranking a number of them.

So: If you're primarily buying a Blu-Ray player and wouldn't mind some cool games to go with it, and want to start watching movies now, I say go ahead and spring for the PS3. On the other hand, if you're interested in springing into the modern wave of consoles and are using Blu-Ray as one of the excuses to go PS3 over the others, then I'd say you need to take games and other things into consideration.

If you're going to be buying a Blu-Ray player, than yes a PS3 is a good choice.

If you have a PS3, there's really no excuse for not having Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank. Resistance is a really good FPS with excellent online support. Motorstorm is an awesome off-road racer. Folklore is really neat, kind of a Pokemon-esque action RPG. (You capture critters, which become your attacks and whatnot, and they grow as you use them)

Oblivion is really good on the PS3, you can get the standard one used + Shivering Isles as a PSN download for $30, or the GOTY edition which has SI packed in.

I think I'm probably the only PA user that liked Lair. I really liked it though.

Oh and Warhawk. It's fuckawesome. Incredible multiplayer that really can't be beat.

As far as which one to get, I'd pick the one with PS2 backwards compatibility, I think that's the 80gb one.

if you want backwards compatability, buy the 80 gig (it's emulated, if I'm not mistaken, but it's the only one still in production to have any kind of support) or the 60 gig if you can find one (discontinued).

    Otherwise, buy the 40 gig.

It's unlikely that you'll regret the purchase, especially if you're looking to buy it for more than one use. Though the most important questions is whether there are any games on the thing or coming for it that you want to play.

    Rewording my suggestion from above:

If you are going to be getting a Blu-Ray player either way; and if you're going to get one now; then buying a PS3 seems like the obvious choice to me. (As in, why the fuck wouldn't you want more than just the ability to play BR's?) If you like fun, then I guarantee you will be able to find at least a few games that you will enjoy.

    If you're trying to decide between a 360 and a PS3, that's a different subject altogether.

If you're looking to buy a HD playing device, ask yourself if you really are interested in watching movies that often (and are there movies out NOW that you want for it) in HD, or if you just want some new tech? Things are going to get cheaper, so waiting is never a bad thing.

Otherwise, do you want PS2 backwards compatibility or not? 40GB if you don't want PS2 compatibility.

Was in the same boat as you a couple of nights ago. I picked up the 40 gb for blu-ray movies. I also downloaded a bunch of demos last night from PSN for all of the PS3 exclusives (Heavenly Sword, Resistance, Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted). I will play those to see what suits me game wise. (Already have 360 and Wii.) I am really looking forward to Little Big Planet too.

I can hear my 40 gb when there is no ambient sound. However, it's pretty quiet compared to the 360 and Wii (when reading disc it's kind of loud). I haven't played a disc based game on it yet so I can't comment completely on its silence.

I watched some of Cars on blu-ray, and it was pretty sweet. I don't think a PS3 is a bad investment if there are movies you want to watch right now. It will be continuously upgraded, and unless you have a really high-end sound sytem you won't notice a difference between it and stand alone players.

I honestly don't plan on buying many games or movies for it at all unless they're on super cheap sale (BOGOs etc.). I will probably stick mostly to rentals for the time being. I also have an HDMI cable on order so I can have my SD-DVDs upscaled.

I've also read it's the fastest loading blu-ray player on the market. Just FYI.

As far as gaming, I doubt you can really go wrong with the PS3 per se.

Just make sure that the games you are looking at are the ones you want. BTW, there are some great things out for the PS3 now, like Rock Band, A's Creed, Cod4, Uncharted, R&C, Warhawk, etc.

    Just don't buy Lair.

I liked Lair as well. It's not hard to control the Dragon so yeah most everyone it full of it in that sense.

Anyway the PS3 is a top notch Blu-ray player as it downloads updates for profiles. It's DVD upscaling is almost perfect. I play games and watch all my movies on it. I have the US 60 gig and it's very quiet, I can barely tell when it's reading games & Blu-ray. The Wii is surprisingly loud especially when I'm playing in the middle of the night, don't get me started on my 360.

As other's have mentioned the PS3 is one of the best, if not THE best Blu-ray player available right now. Part of the reason is that it has the ability to download firmware updates making it future proof for when all the new interactive blu-ray features go live.

There are AV enthusiasts out there who have no games and use the PS3 soley as their Blu-ray player.

Speaking for myself there are some awesome games I've been playing on the PS3 ... Warhawk fucking rocks, Unreal Tournament is also awesome. For single player you've got Uncharted, Rachet & Clank as well as the underated Folklore (amazing game). The PSN network has incredible titles like Super Stardust HD and Everday Shooter.

Not to mention the awesomeness coming later in the year like Metal Gear and Big Little Planet.

Honestly the PS3 has alot going for it right now.

If you are considering buying a standalone Blu-Ray, absolutely go with a PS3.

The only thing that doesn't make it the top Blu-Ray player out right now is it's lack of DTS Master Track decoding, and that theoretically could come via firmware (as can Profile 2.0, theoretically, when it actually gets finalized).

If I could transfer Microsoft Live + it's library to the PS3, I would in a heartbeat. The overall system itself is my favorite, if only because of all of the frankensteined shit on my 360 is built right into my PS3 (WIFI, HD Movie drive, enough USB ports).

The PS3 doesn't have a ton of games (then again my 360 sat collecting dust for most of its first year too) but the ones it does have are great (Uncharted, R&C, Warhawk, Resistance, Calling All Cars, Stardust, Everyday Shooter).

You really can't go wrong with it for games, although there's probably a ton of other threads throughout G&T about the specific games. And there are plenty of potentially impressive games on the horizon, too. Others have said all there is to say about it as a BD player.

Despite the good games and the functionality of the 360, I find myself preferring to play on the PS3 given the choice due to quieter operation and the UI, while again not as featured as the 360, is much more responsive and transparent (IMO).

I'd wait another year. Id expect the PS3 to drop another 50 dollars at least and it would give the library of games a chance to grow.

However, it sounds like all you want is a Bluray player, so I'd just wait for it to completely take over and then, as all the manufacturers and support piles onto it, the prices will plummet. $30-40 a disc isn't exactly consumer friendly right now when you can pay $9.99-19.99 for a DVD that still looks fantastic on HDTVs and you'll be lucky if you can find someone who rents Bluray discs (none in my area do).

If it's actuallya game related purchase, fuck the movie playback and go to gamerankings.com and click each console. Write down the games you would like to have / play on each console. Go with the one with the biggest list.

That's what I was thinking when I first saw this thread.... D:

Anyway, if you are looking at getting a Blu-Ray player then your only real option is the PS3. Seriously. The majority of Blu-Ray players right now can't be upgraded from BD Profile 1.0 to Profile 1.1 or in the future, Profile 2.0. What that means is that if you go for a standalone player, you'll miss out on a bunch of cool features that will be coming up this year.

As for games, I'd highly recommend Ratchet & Clank and Uncharted as your first games. From there you've also got Folklore, which sounds like it'll suit your Action RPG needs.

As for what's coming up, off the top of my head these games would probably appeal to you:

Disgaea 3 - Released this month in Japan, looks really cool. Hopefully it won't take Houk and the crew too long to localise it.

Valkyrie of the Battlefield - It's sort of a mixture between SRPG's and shooters, it's looks awesome. Oh and it's also being released in either January or February in Japan.

Ryu ga Gokotu Kenzan - The psuedo-sequel to the Yakuza games, it's based in the Edo period of Japanese history (which is the same period Onimusha and Samurai Warriors are based in). It doesn't really fit into what you've said you like and dislike but I've got the Japanese demos on my PS3 right now and it's a blast. It's another January/February game in Japan.

White Knight Story - The battle system looks to be an upgraded FFXII system, but with timed combos and a few other things. Graphically it looks amazing. I've no clue when it's coming out in 2008 though, hopefully it won't be long before we hear some news.

LittleBigPlanet - It's a platformer where you can create your own levels, upload them onto an online database, download other peoples creations and then rank them. Words can't really describe how cool it looks, download some of the videos of it out there. It's currently aimed at a mid-to-late 08 release.

Actually, what I like best about my PS3 is the other crap it can do.

I had a lot of relatives visiting my house this holiday season, and the system was a hit.
--The web browser has come along nicely, and I was able to play some fun flash sites and youtube entries that I had told them about.
--After hiking up to the hills, sledding, and such, they all enjoyed coffee around the TV while I played the pictures of our adventure on the TV. That was super-easy: just dropped our camera's SD memory in the slot (I have the 60Gb version), selected the media and hit "slideshow"
--while showing said slideshow, I played Christmas music in the background from a CD I had ripped the previous day.
--with the latest firmware, it also can play movies I film on my digicam (Canon Powershot Elph) right off the SD chip, which was a lot of fun, too.

Of course, I love being able to play my PS2 library on it and the downloadable content. The only Disk-based game I've bought thus far is Rock Band.

Gaming-wise, the biggest problem I have with the system is that Sony absolutely missed the boat with encouraging multiplayer. System-based voice messaging, friend recruitment, and the like are primitive, and even if they weren't, once you're in a game, their Media Bar is inaccessible. Incredibly stupid. I keep expecting them to sort that out with the next firmware update, but thus far, no dice.

So the upshot is that when I'm playing a multiplayer game that doesn't have built in communication (see: Rock Band, above), there's no way for me congratulate my band members or request my leader to play a particular song. It's just playing along silently with a bunch of people named "RALPHIE384". If it wasn't for the interesting clothing and facepaint decisions made by the online players, I might as well be playing offline.

Fortunately, I have a PC to scratch my multiplayer itch. Viva la Steam.

Thus, the 360 certainly has the edge with on-line communication and matchmaking. Sony is promising a lot this Spring with Home, but who knows how that will pan out. I actively try to fight off cynicism when it comes to Sony's claims, and that's a full time job.

Thus, I bought one and have no regrets. Your mileage may vary.

You'd wait a YEAR for a price difference of $50? You think a year's worth of great gaming and HD movie viewing is not worth $50? That sounds like terrible advice to me.

I appreciate your opinion, but the only thing I find annoying about the missions are the way cutscenes are always taking you away from the action. The first time through a level you will be annoyed. But, the game is meant for repeated playing for getting better and better at each level. Once you know where the cutscenes are going to happen you learn to anticipate them and even *gasp* appreciate them for the little pause in the action they give you.

I (well okay, not me but my GF, but I'd still do it) paid $600 for mine in between launch and Christmas 06. The price has dropped considerably since then, and I seriously do not feel bad about having paid that much at all. I've gotten some serious use out of my PS3, and that's with barely watching any DVD's, nevermind Blu-Ray (which I haven't bothered with due to my piece of shit TV).

And I hardly think this is the place to debate whether Lair was a good game - its had its chance, if you like flying games go rent it and see if you like it. I did.

    Ok thanks guys.

I bought one. I did end up with the 40 gb version, cost v feature load wasn't enough to justify the 100. I don't own a single ps2 game, and usb support is enough for me. My room mate rolled his eyes then promptly watched a movie on it.

So the cost of blu-ray movies doesn't concern me. I netflix and buy a few choice titles. (by the way, i didn't see any exorbitant prices at best buy...40 dollar movies? Where?) I agree, digital movie delivery is likely coming in the future (probably to the PS3). I mean it's basically a future that's already here. But that doesn't mean libraries and physical media will disappear. This debate is not germane to my needs so let's table it.

As for upcoming games, fuck yeah Unco's list is what I wanted to see.

I'm grabbing demos all over, and so far I like the basic interface and the store more than the 360's blades and marketplace so far. *REAL MONEY PRICES!*

I'm gonna pick up ratchet and clank tomorrow. Probably calling all cars and everyday shooter too.

I'm a recovering tabletopaholic so eye of judgement seems fuck yeah to me. do people play it, do they all cheat, and should i just skip it?

I don't think too people cheat. Shit, I don't think there is a way to cheat, aside from backing out of a game you know you're going to lose. That's just not cool.
Find people that want to play EoJ here.

Good job getting a PS3. Hope you enjoy it.

I don't recommend Calling all Cars unless you have multiple controllers/friends, the online community for that game is dead. EoJ is great, lots of people to play I don't think people cheat, they just buy lots of cards. (All the stores around me keep selling out of boosters, I had to buy some online. Box prices are inflated online due to demand.) Also they are supposed to release the 2nd set of cards in Feb.

Sony has said there will be in game XMB sometime this year.... A year is a fucking long time but at least its coming sometime.

Yeah people are idiots, saying its dumb to invest in blu-rays movies since it will die or whatever. I don't invest shit, I rent all my blu-rays off of netflix. And its not like my PS3 becomes worthless if for some unlikely reason Blu Ray dies, it still plays PS3 games etc. (I never bought any dvds either, except for a few cartoons for the kids)

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

Put me down as one who enjoyed Lair too cept of course that horrible mission 6.

I more or less skimmed most of the thread so I don't know if anyone else mentioned this. But as a blu-ray player the ps3 has probly the most important feature that I doubt any stand alone will match. If some new feature of bd comes out a stand alone is kinda screwed, where as the ps3 can patch it in an update of the firmware.

I mean unless you can find a stand alone player with updateable firmware.

I'm not 100% sure on this but I think some stand alones do have updateable firmware. I know some TVs do.

still, it's probably not as easy, if it's possible at all.

It's not even great foresight, there are some frankly AWESOME games out at the moment. If you're enjoying Mario Galaxy then I reckon you'll get a good kick out of Ratchett and Clank, it's a bit more shooty but it's a very very enjoyable platformer.

Do you already have a 360? If not you've got all the multiplatform games (and save for a few of the earlier ones they're by and large equally as good as their 360 counterparts) too.

Bluray playback is superb, my PS3 (40gb) is incredibly quiet, the only time I hear it is occasionally on uncharted when it's accessing the disk quickly. If you're going to be using it a lot as a bluray player then pick up the remote, it comes in handy. Also, it makes a damn good up-scaling dvd player, rivalling one I paid quite a considerable amount of money for.

As for ps3 vs standalone bluray player, consider that the ps3 is fully upgradable, most bluray players aren't. They've already upgraded the bluray specification once which essentially put some very early bluray players not quite out of action, but at a loss as they won't be able to show certain features. You don't have to worry about this with the PS3.

The PSN is coming along nicely too, I love the interface and there's some decent games/demos.

As for foresight and the future? There's awesome games coming out, but people have already mentioned them so how about the other side of things?

Linux development is coming along quite nicely, they recently gained access to the gpu (To have it cut off again in the latest firmware update, but they're hunting again) and given a year down the line I can imagine an easy to install Linux Media system with features like XBMC, and it wouldn't surprise me if there was a multi-region bluray player chucked in with that.

I'd highly recommend buying, maybe it's the novelty at the moment but my 360 hasn't even been plugged back in since xmas.

the PS3 is an excellent system. So is the 360. You can't go wrong either way.

As for the PS3, Uncharted, Resistance, Ratchet and Clank, NG Sigma (if you didn't play the older ones to death), Heavenly Sword and Motorstorm (if you like racing games at all) and UT3 are excellent exclusive games. Then, there are excellent multiconsole games that are awesome on the PS3 as they are the 360. You've got Oblivion, Assasins Creed (if you like it, it's good on both systems), VF5, Call of Duty 4, Fight Night 3....etc.

the $400 version is great, you're just not getting any PS2 playability. You'll be able to play any and all PS1 games, just not ps2. It's a definite sacrifice, but if you have a ps2 you're all set.

for future investments' sake? either system. It's not a "buy now to enjoy later" sentament. There are either games on it now that you want to play, or there aren't. I personally went with PS3 because of the list of games I saw as exclusive that I would love to play, along with the ones that were currently out.

The 360 is amazing definitely, it just only has 1-2 games I truly want currently: Gears of War and Bioshock. I've given Halo 3 an honest to goodness chance and I just didn't like it much. It's a great game, it just isn't for me.
