A GBmicro's portability would suit me just right and with GB's library that would be just sweet but the thing is: isn't it a little too small? I never had one in my hands but I really must say, that is one small machine! The lcd seems so tiny that I might not even know what's going on and the buttons seem so close that it seems impossible not to press the wrong ones O_o
On the other hand I could get an old DS (phat) for pretty much the same price but it's not that portable and it doesn't include the GB's library although it has a killer homebrew scene and SCUMM support!
But..what should I buy? Please PA-ers, help me ;-)

I think a DS is your best bet, but let me clarify, everything here that you're worried about with the Micro? A complete and utter non-issue. I fucking love my Micro, and have done almost all my GBA gaming on it in the last two years.
I've owned the both the phat and lite DS and would strongly suggest you get a lite if you are getting a DS.

I'm still on my DS, and it fits in my front pocket easy.
The DS is a much better choice than the micro, since it does all the micro does and then some.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
See if you can get a used lite and try to inspect it before purchasing. If the screens scratched to all hell then avoid (obviously), otherwise it's a very good investment
I got a used lite for christmas and it's pretty much good as new

The Lite is pretty awesome, and since they're sturdy i'm sure you could find a decent used one
As sexy as the micro is, I think I would have to say go with a DS. Even though I think saving for a lite is an excellent idea, the phat DS will still allow you to play GBA and DS games.
How much are lites where you live? I live out in the boonies and mine was $140 canadian, which is really a bargain for all the awkward family gatherings it has saved me from having to endure.
BUT my friend had a gameboy micro. And I could not believe the sound and display that little shit put out. It wouldn't be too small unless you have gargantuan hands. I feel more comfortable on the oxBox controller than the oxbox s controller, and the micro was ok to hold.
If you can get it for 50 or under, get the micro to get down on some games. If iti s going to be more than that, might as well just save for a DSLite.
PS- I have a DS phat and love it, but if given the choice, I would gladly take a lite instead. The display on lites is just....incredible.

My launch DS Lite developed nasty cracks on both hinges. Now the lid is all loose and floppy.
Not to point any fingers, but most of a handheld device's durability depends on the care the owner puts into it. I've had my DS (the old model) for almost 3 years now, and the only thing wrong with it (which I just noticed two nights ago) is that the plastic covering the Nintendo logo on the top part of the case is starting to peel off.

there's a small plastic "sticker" over the nintendo logo that you can peel off
are you sure it's not that?

Which one can be had for sub $50 (under $30 if you look hard enough) and allows you to play FF VI on your keychain?
Get that one.
Yes, I realize if you look hard enough and have big enough pockets, both would be an answer. Shut it.
The micro is an amazing system, The DS can play all the same games the micro can, and many more. But it is bigger. If you only get one, get the DS. If you really like things tiny, and for some strange reason are touched in the brain such that you don't like the amazing DS library, get just the micro.
I for one buy any Micro I see under $30. I have three now.

I can't find one anywhere anymore. Do the big corporations still sell them at all, or will I have to hit up pawn shops?
The micro is smaller than my cell phone. I love it so very much, in fact I usually keep my phone and micro in one pocket and my DS lite in the other, because I hate playing GBA games on the DS. Cannot stand the button layout.
The EBstops around here (Central Jersey) have about two or three each. And there are like five in a 25 mile radius.
My opinion is thus: Either shell for a Lite, or go with a Micro. There are plenty of absolutely awesome GBA games to tide you over while you save up for a Lite.
I have two GBm, two DSl, and DSp handhelds. The GBm can do Game Link for multiplayer, but you need some rare cables to do it and it doesn't look like third-parties ever stepped up to the plate ( you have to order from store.nintendo.com ). That's it's advantage. Even then, you have to splice your own cable if you want to connect it to the GCN. They even had to make a GBm-specific wireless adapter! It's sexy, but I'm glad I have my GBA SPs around for multiplayer and GCN connectivity. I don't think I'd consider the GBm if I didn't already own GBA and GBA SP.

I pointed this out in a thread years ago and got a whole bunch of "OMG!"'s from people who never noticed. It's just the same as the bubble-imprisoning films stuck all over other electronics to protect from scratches from packaging/shipping.

neither the DS nor Micro play GB/C games
get the DS

It's not a used DS is it? I would recommend strongly against getting a used DS.
Don't worry though, it's brand-new, the guy has two

Did you guys not see where he doesn't want to pay for a Lite?
Comparison fails because the Mighty Mouse blows chunks (and I say this as a self-admitted Apple fanboi), whereas the DS Lite does not.

I almost wish something would happen to my Phatboy so I could justify getting a lite. The screen brightness makes a big difference.

Ah, but that is not the mighty mouse. That is the old Apple Pro Mouse which was absolutely fucking awesome.

Personally, I'd have this list in order:
The tiny screen would be an annoyance. Of course, the real answer is this.
