Anyone Else Excited About DEMIGOD?

As some of you are aware, I'm intrigued by combining game genres to produce interesting new combinations of games. In a prior post, I postulated the intriguing combination of a real time strategy game combined with a role playing game. I've been tinkering with this idea for some time, and it appears that the programmers over at Gas Powered Games had a similar vision. Demigod. Link: http://www.gaspowered.com/demigod/

Now, details are sketchy, but it appears that Demigod seeks to combine two separate styles of play, one that will play similar to an RPG (the Assassin) and one that will play similar to a RTS (the General). Count me among those that are incredible excited about this development. This really is the future of games, constantly redefining the once static genres and pushing forward with new ideas that change our conceptions.

I am very interested to see how they balance the various issue that will arise from this combination. Will they elect to have two separate games as I suggested? Thereby allowing for a full experience of both RPG and RTS that just happen to intersect? Or will they integrate the two, shortchanging one genre for the other. Unless they have truly separated the two genres (only to be combined in the manner I suggested) I don't see any way of avoiding the conflict between the two playstyles unless they have decided to make one genre dominant over the other. Since longterm RTS battles are unlikely to occur under an RPG paradigm, my suspicion is the game revolves around an RTS framework with an RPG mini-game within. While this isn't my favorite option, it's an excllent first step in the right direction by Gas Powered Games. Kudos to them.

I for one was not aware.

I will say that you can have both types without having either be short changed or separate. I think it's possible to have synergies between the two.

I'm skeptical, but open to this possibility. I think you could make the individual battles episodic quests in the RPG realm, but if the quest objectives are merely aspects of the RTS battle you don't really have an RPG and RTS combined, you have an RTS with an in-depth character play. This alone would be a giant step in the right direction, but I'm fascinated by the possibilities.

Isn't this the game that was inspired by WC3's DotA?

I mean, I love my DotA like my next, but if this attracts the same community that spoiled my enjoyment for this game over the last couple of years, I'm going to pass this. Seriously, those morons can even ruin the greatest game.

I just heard about this game in a recent GFW mag, and it sounds interesting. Personally, I've appreciated Gas Powered Games more for their RPGs than their RTSes, but I'm hoping that Demigod has a strong enough RPG component to entice me.

Previous games in this little subgenre, namely Dragonshard and Spellforce 2, have been surprisingly good, so I'm hopeful that Taylor and GPG can leapfrog over them.

Also, I think you're skirting sitewhore territory with the blog thing, Fizzle. I'd suggest you stop doing that.

Yes, Taylor talks about DotA as an inspiration. I've never played DotA, but why do you think it attracts a community you dislike? Is it the base game, or something about DotA itself beyond Warcraft?

Good start to the day. Pity it's going to be the worst one of your life. The light is now on.

Do you think merely mentioning that the post is a cross-post is taking it too far? I generally note that fact and then don't mention the blog after the OP.

I'm not attempting to argue the point, merely understand the scope of the posting rules.

If the proper solution is to not post the topics at all I'll accept that solution. So far my posts have engendered some interesting debate, but if it's an issue I'll abide by the common consensus. I'm disinclined to spend an hour or two thinking this stuff up without taking the nominal credit of noting it's a cross post.

EDIT: Oh, I think you were referring to the signature line. I've removed the link.
