Help me break in my DS!

edited February 2008 in Games and Technology
hello all :]

I was hoping you gents could recommend me some sweet DS games, as I just recieved one for my b-day :)

I attempted to dig through Gamestop/EB's respective websites but there seemed to be a serious lack of discerning gamers in their review posts (when there were any). I remembered seeing a DS thread up here but I can't find it anywhere in the mix, what with the search down and all. :\

It really doesnt matter what kind of game it is to me, as long as it's quality.

thanks in advance!

Pretty much all of the Phoenix Wright games are great though I recommend the first one because it has custom made DS missions added on the end (all PW games are GBA ports I think)

Pokemon is also awesome. Get Pearl, I need your pokemans!

Hotel Dusk is great if you have a commute to work/school

NSMB is an essential purchase too.

Currently I have Pokemon Diamond and Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, and both are great. Recently picked up the first Phoenix Wright and I am saddened that I have waited this long to play it, it's simply a fantastic game. Also Final Fantasy: Revenant Wings if you're into the Final Fantasy series, and Advance Wars: Days of Ruin.

Like the others before me recommended, I would go with Phoenix Wright. Just remember to go in order if you do because the each sequel refers back to the previous ones. If you like rhythm games, you should pick up either Ouendan or Elite Beat Agents. Or if turn-based games are your preference, you can't go wrong with either Advance Wars Dual Strike or Days of Ruin.

I recommend Trauma Center 100%. I'm playing through Under the Knife for the first time, and it's a lot of fun. Advance Wars is a must have, Zelda is a lot of fun, and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2 is en route I believe, along with Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword.

I'll probably be the only dissenting voice on Phoenix Wright, but I just didn't like it that much. I found the investigation tedious (not Assassin's Creed tedious, but tedious nonetheless) and a lot of the courtroom scenes frustrating. I encountered a lot of situations where either the evidence I was supposed to present made no sense to me, or some objection that I had or evidence that I wanted to present wasn't allowed. Again, this is personal opinion, and I know that a lot of people really enjoy the games, but for me I just found them frustrating and quit after the fourth mission of the first game.

No one has mentioned it and it hasn't gotten rave reviews but I suggest Panzer Tactics. If you're a fan of the Advanced Wars series and World War II its full of win. Basically a complete adaptation of the Panzer General games from PC to DS.

    I love it.

All of these are valid issues and complaints with the game. Also, there's a lot of reading involved and if you aren't up for all of that it's probably not a good choice either.

That being said, the way the cases unfold, the characters, and the storyline are all top-notch. Often times a case will turn all the way around from what you think is happening, and that moment of discovery and revelation, when all the pieces click into place, is fantastic.

A lot of characters and sprites are recycled throughout all three games (Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice For All, and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trials and Tribulations), but it is nice to see familiar faces as you work your way through the cases to figure out what really happened.

Honestly, the games are fantastic. I can't wait to forget how to solve the cases and what happened so I can play them again fresh. Plus, there's a new one (allegedly) coming in February with a new protagonist and revamped game mechanics, Ace Attorney Apollo Justice.

Also, you might try out Elite Beat Agents, Puzzle Quest, Dementium: The Ward, the WarioWare DS game... there are so many. slash probably covered them better than I could.

I think Revenant Wings is real-time while the new Tactics will be turn-based like its previous incarnations. At least I hope so.

You know what? I had fun with Phoenix Wright. I really liked the Steel Samurai case, and although it put me off at first the parrot cross-examination was really funny. It's just that the things that I didn't like about it started to weigh on me after a while, and by the time I finished the fourth case (which was excellent by the way) I just couldn't see myself going on. Re-reading my original post, it came across as a little too damning. I really looked forward to the court room sequences, and I love some of the music.

One last bit of advice to the OP. Avoid the Mana series like the plague. A friend of mine bought Children of Mana on a whim, got bored with it in a few hours, and gave it to me. I lasted about five hours before I had had enough.

I... wish I could recommend something, but I don't have a DS. Been trying to find one for a week now but everywhere is sold out! GRR!

Actually, let me take that back. I can recommend Puzzle Quest. It's freakin' awesome!

Haven't quite decided what I'm going to pick up first whenever I get mine...

I recommend picking up Dementium: The Ward. I was surprised about how good the game was when I played it. It's pretty creepy at times and the gameplay is great.

I also recommend Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Contra 4 (very challenging), Metroid Prime: Hunters, New Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart DS, and Hotel Dusk.

Having just played through the first Phoenix Wright game, I have to say: get it. Whether you're a fan of adventure games, or just good games in general. you can probably get it for cheap, too.

Another worthy game you can get for cheap is WarioWare Touched!

Well, not sure what style of gameplay you're looking for, so as a general option I'll say Puzzle Quest. An RPG/puzzle game sounds crazy, but it's actually a plan so crazy it might just work.

I have also been greatly enjoying Front Mission DS if you're into tactical turn-based strategy. Though I hear the most recent Advance Wars is fantastic (next on my list).

if you want to break your brain/eyeballs, and possibly your DS from sheer frustration at the face raping difficulty level of a game, you could try Ontamarama

if you just want a really fun game though i highly recommend Elite Beat Agents and Advance Wars:Days of Ruin

Only buy Puzzle Quest if you want to play A Tonne of Bejeweled. So much Bejeweled that the normal spelling of "Ton" couldn't support the load.
