An acoustic guitar for a beginner

I don't really know anything about buying a guitar, I don't know what to look for or anything. I know there are a lot of guitarists here, I'm hoping you can help me out. I'm looking to buy a good (yet cheap) acoustic guitar for myself. I don't really have a price range, preferably anything less than $300.

If it helps, I've owned a guitar before (if you can call it that, it was a cheap $40 Stargazer that sounded horrible and couldn't keep tuned) and have a basic concept of guitars/music theory.

I'm not exactly a guitarist, but I do own an acoustic guitar that I keep in the closet for tooling around with when friends come over. It's a Washburn and it cost me just over $200 if I recall... It sounds great and hasn't given me any trouble in the three or four years I've owned it. I doubt it's a serious guitarists guitar, but if you just want something you can fiddle with or learn on it's been a pretty reliable brand...

Also, 9 out of 10 times, there's usually a really helpful dude at any guitar shop that can help you find something in your budget.

This isn't going to be a flashy answer but, you need to just go to a guitar store and pluck around, see what sounds best to you. This is a subjective thing.

That being said, Ibanez makes some pretty decent guitars for very cheap. So does Yamaha.

I got a Yamaha early last year ($300 AUS) to learn on and I think it's pretty awesome.

Thanks guys, those Ibanez look pretty good. I'll go down to Guitar Center and fiddle around.

    Edit: Oooo, come to poppa!

I have a Dean that I really like. Cost me just about 275 but it has a built in tuner and a pretty good pickup for the price range. I had it set up at the local guitar place and it plays as well as my $600 samick (big difference is that my samick has a bit more bass when it's not plugged in). Here's a link to it:

This Ibanez is a pretty decent buy as well. 200 bucks and seems to have great reviews.

Whatever you buy, make sure you get them to set it up for you for free or very cheap.

$300 is heaps for a starter guitar, you should be able to get something of reasonable quality to tide you over till you become awesome at guitar and know exactly what you're looking for. I found it great to learn on a nylon string, but it's really personal preference. The Little Martin looks gorgeous.
