Portable hand-helds and work

So I work in the oilfield, and due to that-I am at work sometimes 18 hours a day. Sometimes there is roughly only two hours of work in that work period so suffice to say I have a lot of down time. I've been struggling with picking a hand held to help me out of the boredom but I can't seem to honestly come to a conclusion. I have come here to ask the denizens of the great PA to assist me in picking one of three items that will most likely keep me entertained the most hours possible.

I have three options, and I'm only really leaning heavily on two of them. I have been weighing the option of either a DS Lite, PSP, or just a standard iPod or Zune. I kind of threw away the idea of the mp3 player considering music/video is great, but it seems I can just get music/video out of the PSP, and while the DS has better games overall (personal thought), the PSP seems like the all around multimedia winner for keeping someone occupied for long periods of time.

There are plenty of games I want for either, but the CC sale starting tomorrow (20% off all DS games) has stopped me dead in my tracks and made me rethink the PSP idea.

What say you Penny Arcade!

I want to say DS Lite because I love mine to death, but at the same time when I was out with the army for six months, I had my PSP with me which I used both for games and music and it was good for passing time when I could, or just listening to music which helped me get to sleep.

I sorta like the DS better because I think its games are more awesome, but at the same time the music playing option with the PSP is good too.

Or you could get creative and do what I did towards the end of that six months - buy a 360 and a portable DVD player. =D

I do have a company truck, and I keep it pristine inside. I work for Schlumberger, so I'm not a roughneck-I'm merely a low-level engineer right now so I mostly stay away from the "dirty" side of the job.

I should also note I have a ps3, so is there really any advantage to getting a PSP?

You can play music (and draw/make music etc.) on the DS if you get a homebrew cart.

I have a DS, but my advice would be to buy the system that has the games you want to play.

I bring my DS to work, I have a lot of downtime on the weekends. It's great to be able to just flip it shut when I need to do something and then come back to it later.

But at the same time there are a lot of games on the PSP I'd like to play, but not too many coming out for the DS that really have me interested. I mostly just play puzzle quest right now.

Id say go with a large capacity ipod, load it up with a shitload of music, and a lot of podcasts.

even the best ds games get really old in long stints, whereas i can, and am at this second, listen to music or radio all day every day.

I'm in a similar boat as you are mate (12 hour shifts at onsite work for 8 days straight). I also happen to have a DS lite, PSP phat and Zen so I'm in a very appreciable position haha.

While I don't play games while I'm at work work (pretty busy 12 hours!) more often than not I hit up the portables and some music because its better than going to the wet mess every night. From personal preference and experience, and a varied libary of both handhelds, I play the PSP more. I just find that with the PSP games I enjoy, I'm able to sit down and put a solid 2 hours or so at a single time. With the DS I usually play it in short bursts like inbetween ads while half-watching TV.

I wouldn't buy the PSP alone due to its multimedia capablities (not yet anyway). Although its a pretty good video player and MP3 player, it has alot of limitations. You'll need to find a video converter on the net (not sure if you get the 'media pack' over in the US) to make them viewable on the PSP and in almost all games I own you're unable to play your own music ingame. The music arrangements in general are pretty labour intensive because you've gotta make seperate folders for everything on your own.

The potential functionality is all right there for Sony to exploit, but they're dragging their feet bigtime with it for some ungodly reason.

As for the Zen, its extremely easy to put music and videos on it but by golly it makes you click through alot of menus. The buttons are also pretty small. But hey, its also got flash storage!

All in all, if you enjoy lengthy handheld sessions, PSP is my recommendation. I'm still on the fence on whether the Zen is better than an iPod... atleast the Zen doesn't have to deal with iTunes.

You can download a program that converts MP3's into a different format for the PSP thats smaller so you can fit more music on it, plus easily arrange all your music on it too. My friend had a good amount of entire albums on his plus video's as well all on a 1 gig card.

Hell if I remember what that program was called though, I beleive its free though, but it didnt want to work with my 64bit version of Vista.

You can stream music and video from your PS3 to your PSP and some games support remote play (meaning you can play certain PS3 games on your psp such as PixelJunk Monsters). Though I've found remote play isn't the greatest. There is some lag and if you increase the visual quality settings it becomes unplayable due to lag. That said of what little I've toyed with it the audio/video streaming is pretty good. As for headphones the PSP pack I got (phat not slim) came with a set of cheap ear buds.

In the end it comes down to what you want to do and what you want to play. If you want extra media features the PSP is your handheld. If you want truckloads of great games and great battery life then you want a DS. The PSP's battery life IMO sucks.

I own both and I enjoy them but if I had to pick one I'd go with a DS. Even more so if you want it as a portable due to battery life.

I'd definitely go for PSP over DS. Grab a few sticks and load em up with music, video, game demos etc. PSP isn't the greatest or the most functional but it's works.

If you find yourself around a wifi connection you'd be able to use remote play, like someone else mentioned, and other things. Like Skype, internet radio, webbrowser etc. Then you have other accessories and features coming out like the GPS unit and the planned Bluray copy/playback. (However that'll work).

In the end though, just weigh which platform has the games you like most, vs features and capabiltiies of the other.

You work in the oilfield and have to decide? In my area you make probably $5k a month for working in the oilfield (at least), but I also live way up in the boonies so they gotta make it worthwhile. That said I really like my DS but a PSP would probably offer you more options for entertainment while you're at work. I have never actually tried a PSP but if you're relying on it as your only entertainment, I imagine having the option for music and movies would trump just being able to play some games.

Yeah, but if the DS has the games you want to play as opposed to the PSP's superior functionality (and game library that is severely lacking in Mario), then the tables can still turn.

Both systems have quite a few good "pick up and play" games, like Lumines, Puzzle Quest (PSP) or WarioWare and Brain Age (DS). But it all comes down to preference.

I work on Radars way the fuck out in the middle of the desert and have both a PSP and a DS Lite, the PSP is nice for the movies, but the battery life sucks. My DS can go for a week without a recharge sometimes.

PSP has a rubbish battery life, which is certainly something to consider when you're looking at filling so much space.

Unless you're going to be tied to a wall or something.

If you turn brightness and volume down you can help extend battery life, or turning screen off when listening to music or whatever. But yea, it is short. Portable charger, spare battery?

True, but I know I'm the type that would want variety and there's still gotta be enough decent stuff on the PSP for games for when you want to play. If the OP is that type then the PSP is definitely the better choice. For the games library? I'd go with the DS for sure.

It might be worth taking a look at a Micro, they are pocket sized and perfect for work. Battery charge lasts forever too.

Otherwise, you can't go wrong with a DS.

I dunno, I've been really liking my new PSP. I love it for school, I pretty much play it through every class(yes, yes, dumb of me, but w/e). The main thing I like is that it has a good number of time consuming games. Disgaea and FFT are long, then throw on top of that the monster hunter games, certain rpg's, and then you can look into my mile long psp backlog :P

I've had a DS forever, but... I dunno, I prefer the wide size of the psp over the square size of the DS. Also, I tend to burn through ds games more easily.

Don't forget about keeping that WLAN switch off. That really does a number on your battery.

If you can find one, consider a Micro. GBA games are on the cheap as a whole now and you won't be needing any of the features that the Micro lacks in comparison to the other GBA models.

I just spent two days straight of pure DS action.

I played nothing that couldn't be played in short spurts but god damn I wanted to kick David Bowie's ass in EBA.

So with the DS you'll find a good selection of games that can be played for only a few minutes but are also there for the long gaming binges. The PSP gives you the media functions but it's games are really not made for portable use (at least the ones I own). Go for the DS if gaming is more important to you.

My thoughts exactly. I live in the boonies so used to spending more on entertainment than most people, but it keeps me sane which is worth the price. I wouldn't want to lug around two systems either though.
