PS3 buying advice (or, "Channeling the Casual Gamer")

edited February 2008 in Games and Technology
I mentioned this in another thread but figured it might get more traffic broken off of its tangent: A friend's wife is looking to buy him a PS3 for his birthday in two weeks and asked me for advice. I'm unsure if she's thinking the 40GB or 80GB but I don't think PS2 BC is really a priority for him. He's a pretty protoypical Madden–and–Guitar Hero gamer, so I'm trying to think of games to recommend and since this is the only system I don't own this gen I wanted to seek input.

I think I'm going to tell her Uncharted and either Motorstorm or Ratchet & Clank, plus she can get Madden 07 for free if she buys at Target this week. (Plus I'm telling her to buy the HDMI cable from Monoprice.) Any other ideas or replacements? I was thinking about importing a DualShock3 for him from Play-Asia but I don't know if it'd be cooler to just buy him another game instead. Note that he already has GH3 for Wii, and while I think he's sold on Rock Band I don't think she's willing to buy him the bundle on top of the system. :)

Also, Blu-Ray capability is a big reason he's interested in the system (and why she's surprising him with it), so besides corin7's suggestion of a BR remote, what's a good movie or two that really flexes the system's power?

Planet Earth is a must own in any of the Hi-Def formats. If/when Hot Fuzz goes BR, then get that too. Only good friends get their friends Hot Fuzz in HD.

Being a recent PS3 owner myself, I have yet to watch any of the Blu-rays we have. So someone else will need to give you advice. However, I do own Planet Earth on HD-DVD, and it should be mandatory for any HDTV and High-Def disc owner to have it, it's on Blu-ray too.

For games, I have been sucked in by Pixel Junk Monsters, and playing it with the girl is fantastic, at $8 on the PSN, it's outlasted a couple of full retail games for me. However, if he is a traditional Madden every year buyer kind of gamer, I'm not sure tower defense will appeal.

Warhawk I hear is great, I just ordered it online from Amazon, it's $40 because it's the deal of the day. So if that an option, she better jump on it. It comes with a bluetooth headset as well, which works with anything, not just the PS3. Since the PS3 doesn't come with a headset, if he plans on playing madden online down the road, it's not a bad idea.

The remote is an excellent idea, as Blu-Rays are part of the main reason he wants one. Any specific one come recommended? And I'm unsure how big of an FPS fan he is, but I'll float Call of Duty 4 past her -- what I'm thinking of doing is having her sneak a peek at his PS2 collection and then basing more impressions on his tastes. I don't think he's really into more violent stuff, but the stylized action of Uncharted and Ratchet seem to have more of a PG-13 kind of appeal.

Perhaps throw some money onto a Playstation Store Card so he can get a couple downloadable titles like Super Stardust HD and Pixel Junk Monsters. Both good for casual pick up and play or to seriously sink your teeth into. They both feature 2-player co-op modes. I think his wife and he could get a lot of enjoyment out of playing the Pixel Junk Monsters co-op especially. It's basically Tower Defense if you are not yet familiar with it.

Any of the three "Pirates" and Planet Earth Bluray are amazing. If you pick up the Planet Earth's make sure it's the BBC version. Apparently the american version is only in 1080i, and merely average picture quality (compared to the beautiful BBC version). http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/983/planetearth_us.html

He's a casual kind of gamer? Tell her to pick up either CoD4, Resistance, or Warhawk. If I had to choose one, I'd choose CoD4, but they're all great. Also, the 80 gb PS3 comes with Motorstorm

I don't know him all that well but my gut tells me that he's not really an FPS gamer -- I'm not sure, though. I'm going to tell his wife to peek at his PS2 collection, see what he has and then report back to me. I was thinking more family-friendly stuff like Ratchet and Madden might be more his speed, as in actiony but not really overtly violent.

Are those PS Store cards out in the wild now? I haven't really seen them, but that sounds like a good plan too. And do PS3s come with one or two controllers? If it's just one I might tell him to hold off and wait for the DualShock 3 to hit the states before dropping coin on another one, which is why I was also considering importing one since I have some credit left from Play-Asia and a coupon.

That's what I thought. :) How's the difficulty on those two games? I don't want them to be too frustratingly tough.

Alternatively, if he might be more in line for an arcadey racing game, would anyone recommend Motorstorm or Burnout?

Both are very easy going games. I doubt anyone will ever get stuck in either of them.

I have never been a burnout fan. I got Motorstorm with my PS3 and didn't touch it for a month. I expected it to be a gran tourismo style game or something, so I didn't give it a chance. Then, after I had beaten uncharted and COD4 and R&C and Heavenly sword, I gave it a go and it blew me away. I'd say it's most comparable to Excite bike (both in terms of gameplay and control schemes) and it's a blast. I'd recommend it at least.

If he's really into arcade style driving games, however, I gotta pimp Outrun 2006. Outrun 2 is phenomenal, and 2006 is even better. It's a PS2 title, so he can only play it if he has the right PS3, but damn it rocks.

According to an article on Kotaku posted on Boxing Day they have been spotted, but so far only on an Armed Forces base. So it looks like that plan could fall through. I've never seen them myself, but then again I haven't been looking because I us my cc. It's too bad, both of those games I suggested could have been purchased with the $20card with a couple bucks leftover.

Both SKUs come with only one controller, however I have seen bundle deals online that throw in a second. That being said I haven't seen any 80gig models left on store shelves in the two big box stores I happened to visit last night. Only 40's.

In regards to the difficulty of R&CF and Uncharted, I haven't completed R&CF yet but it was easy up until the point I played. I read, somewhere on these forums I believe, that the difficulty gets cranked up in the later levels. Uncharted on normal is hard enough until you get the hang of it. You'll die plenty of times until you do, then probably die some more. It depends on how you play I guess. if you just stop and pop the whole way through it'll probably seem too easy and boring. Run'n'gunning, blindfiring and meléeing is where it's at. The Hard setting I found to be the optimal difficulty for enjoyment of the game. Crushing is exactly as the name implies.

Was it filmed at more than the normal 24fps? If not then 1080i vs. 1080p is moot.

I'm fairly certain that Planet Earth was fillmed at 60 fps on digital film using the latest and greatest equipment possible.

Casual Gamer you say? My suggestions for ze casual player:

    Sing Star
    Ridge Racer
Assassin's Creed (Has gone down well with a lot of casual gamers due to the rather large marketing campaign)
    Virtua Tennis 3
Fight Night Round 3 (I'm suggesting a few sports games because, and this is heavy generalisation, most Madden fans like other manly sports games. Like boxing)
    Colin McCrae Dirt
    Burnout
    Sega Rally
    NHL
    Ferrari Challenge

Also I don't know if it's just the UK but playasia won't import ANYTHING PS3 related, including hardware. You can put it in the basket but when you go to order it says not available for delivery in your area.

No experience with monoprice so can't help you there :)

You mentioned it and others but I still have to say Uncharted. Every PS3 owner who likes FUN should own this game. IMO it was the most polished and fun single player experience of 07. Unless he hates cartoony style games you can't go wrong with Ratchet and Clank either.

As for a multiplayer shooter if I had to pick just one Call of Duty 4 would be it. Solid across all platforms, good single player, great multiplayer. Warhawk is fun but CoD4 really has all the shooter bases covered IMO.

With that said what kind of movies and books does he like? Is he a massive Harry Potter fan? There is a Harry Potter box set out on Blu-Ray. If he's into Sci-fi Blade Runner was recently released too with every version of the movie under the sun on Blu-ray too. (and if he's a huge fanboy there's a set that comes in a briefcase)

Getting a little less general if he likes anime you can get Wings of Honneamise (the hd/blu version btw blows the old DVD release out of the water) and a few other anime releases. Appleseed Ex Machina is coming in March too.

edit: Oh btw these are some decent sites for reviews for Blu-ray and HD-DVD movies.

One other notable recent movie release I almost forgot to mention is Sunshine. Great movie and it looks AWESOME in HD.
