Drawing monsters

Isn't it awesome when someone takes the time to critique your work?
Anyway..., I kind of feel like the monster designs are really stylish and yet, not all that creative. I think that the problem is that you show your influences a little to heavily on these examples. That said, I do think they have potential to be pretty awesome (both creatively and artistically) if you took some time to re-think different aspects of each one.
A few that stuck out to me were: The top seems very much a combo of Charmander and the Squid/octopus things from the legend of Zelda. The bottom also reminds me of that cartoon with mutant sharks... the ones that fought crime and there was a hammer head/great white... and several others.
I have a feeling that last bit didn't help much, but google isn't being kind to me right now. If i can find the name of that show, it'd probably be easier to understand what i'm trying to say .... *slaps himself in the face*
Haha, yes, that's it. Thanks DeeLock. I kinda felt like pulling my hair out cause I couldn't remember that show

holy crap! I have never even seen this "Street Sharks" but it looks awesome! When the hell did it come out?!? Maybe i was too old? i'm 27. I was all about TMNT, Exo Squad (bombest show ever), X-Men, etc
Also conceptual thinking has always been hard for me. I really do't know why, because i have a great imagination, but for some reason when i have paper and a pencil in front of me i draw a blank.
What helps you guys?
I remember an AWESOME thread about creature concept designs in here prob about a year ago where people would name 2 animals and have to draw it. I thought that was a great excersize and i combined an elephant and a meerkat to make this.

Street Sharks was amazing when I was a kid. I had all the action figures! I'm 20, so you were probably too old to have seen it. My favourite one was the yellowish/orange Shark. Ahhh memories.
Street Sharks was the poor man's Ninja Turtles. I'm 28 and I remember it cropping up on Saturday Morning cartoons a few years after I stopped caring about cartoons.
good stuff here, btw, i would also like to see more
oh oh oh,
do an octogator!
edit:
i do have something constructive to add:
try some different poses too, your profiles are great but it definitely seems like you are talented enough to do more with these

when i draw concept what helps me is to jot down notes on a scratch anything (i.e. a napkin) before i start; because while i do like to improvise, i will often lose sight of what i originally wanted to do. just write ideas you have down, like what you want to put on for a head or how you want to shape the creature itself. then you can just sketch and go from there... its weird and probably a little outside canon, but it helps me focus.

STREET SHARKS!
anyways...
i kinda agree with in absentia...there is a lot of great stylization but the overall concepts behind the creatures are poor.
I would suggest doing thumbnail sketches of a silhouette of a creature and pick the one that appeals to you the most.
Not the best critique but i just wanted to post the STREET SHARKS!!! poster.
:P
