I'll just give the biggest clue I know upfront: HAL Laboratory was behind it. There's that much english in it. Okay, first the history:
Got it from a pilot uncle who travelled to Asia all the time, played the hell out of it as a kid, recently found it again, and now I'm curious as to what it's called, what the game's plot is, if there were sequels, basically anything about it. So here's the info, in no particular order, and there's a ton of it:
Game Boy Classic game. A top-down perspective tank game. You played as an odd cartoonish tank, basically a white ball with four black balls for wheels, and a tank barrel, no other features (cutscenes confirmed this was how it actually looked, no bad graphics here). The game usually scrolled upwards, but there were some sideways sections. You would move through the levels, defeating enemies and bosses like any other game. You had a health meter along the side, and multiple lives. The game had an over-the top art style, with weird, over-the-top bosses like a clumsy suit of armor, a tank with a dragon head and boxing gloves, and the like. The standard enemies were just run-of-the mill tanks and the like, though. They were also deliberately stupid, and would do scripted things like crash into explosives and the like. You yourself would fire cannonballs as your regular attack, but there were special shots you could pick up, that would go through enemies, or fire three shots in a spread, or let you shoot backwards, or fire an explosive blast. They didn't stack, and taking damage would cause you to loose it. If I recall correctly, the game had 4 stages. The names were in english, and I think they were The Grasslands, Base in Desert, The Cave, and Capital City. The enemy was apparently called "AK", as that logo showed up in a lot of places. The opening teaser cutscene depicted them running through a village, and one of their tanks being captured, the one you played as. The final area (after capital city) was a shakedown of all previous bosses, and the final encounter was against a giant human-looking robot that would make tanks. It would then attack you with explosive orbs, two tanks in its hands that would fire all the special shots, then it would pretend to surrender, waving a fan, but would try and smash you with a giant hammer. After you beat it, the end cutscene depicted you being chased by the Clumsy Knight boss from earlier. It said on the title screen that Hal Laboratory made it, though the actual title was in Japanese.
So, can anyone tell me anything about this game? What it was called, what the plot was, if there were sequels, does anyone have a web page about it? I hope the info is enough. Wikipedia didn't help me find it.
