I too must go back and finish off that last story required stratum.

Seriously, that place got confusing at times.

Expect to go up and down between B23 and B24 about five separate times, with a ridiculously long trek waiting on the last trip before you finally make progress.

What's worse is the 'destination' is very easy to overlook.

I absolutely loved the 5th stratum, the amount of exploration jammed into it is just amazing compared to the levels before it. Then the 6th stratum, oh so much fun (wacky teleporting root shaped labyrinth on the first level? Yes please!)

My favorite floor in the first game (from what I've seen of the game; didn't get beyond 25) is... the 14th I believe. It's the third stratum map where you ride lilipads to small islands all over the place. All it took was a bit of getting used to.

I just picked up a used copy at Gamestop but haven't played it yet. Closest ones with New copies were a good 25 miles away and I didn't feel like spending the time and gas on that. But what I don't get, is who the fuck trades in DS games without a case? Who the fuck doesn't just keep their DS games in their proper cases? So I've got one of the generic EBStop cases. Is there any websites with a high quality scan of the case lining so I can print my own? Not a huge deal but I like having mine look good damnit.

A lot of GameStops probably throw the boxes away, and keep the carts.

That's definitely what they've done to used GBA games.

How would that work, practically speaking? You can't eject cartridges and slot new ones in while the game is running, it borks it up. Unless you need two DS systems and you beam the party from one to another; or, they make a Wifi component where you upload your party, then grab it with EO2 (but that'd require EO1 to already have that feature).

This is as best a place to post this as anywhere. My wife is currently looking for a copy of the English version of Etrian Odyssey, but we cannot seem to find a place that has it in stock and will ship to Japan. Anyone know anywhere that I could just order it for her and have it shipped? I checked Play-Asia, Yes-Asia, etc... but really haven't found much.

As with most Atlus games, this one is out of print. You'd be lucky to find this in new condition for a relatively cheap price. eBay is as good as any place to start.

GBA games didn't come in plastic containers that were designed to hold them though. They had other used DS games in their original cases, and a bunch at the bottom in generic EBStop cases. I just don't get who would throw away the original cases for DS games.

So I just had my entire party wiped out by poisonous butterflies before I ever had a chance to return to town and save. I swear I should be packing two medics or something. When can my Protector learn Cure? I ended up going with Protector, Landsknecht, Dark Hunter, Alchemist, and Medic, and named them after my friends and I's group when we played WoW of Paladin, Warrior, Rogue, Mage, and Priest...

And despite dieing and not having saved recently which would normally tick me off, I just can't hate this game. Exploring and drawing the map is just too cool, and the game just exudes polish. Even the main menu is sexy. And at least it let me save my map though so the first hour or so wasn't a waste.

Same here. I've gotten to the bottom of B5F(Waterfall). I can't help but wonder if the games shared some staff members; lots of similarities between Wizardry and EO.

My favorite thing about Wizardry's battle system are the Allied Actions. Double Slash, Rush, and Assist Shot are the coolest time-saving abilities ever.

And the Survivalist is a life saver later on, mostly for the ability that boosts evade. He also gets some strong abilities(like Apollon and Multishot).

Eh, while I'm at it, any advice on the final boss(5th Stratum)?
Thorns tears my party up before I can even blink, not to mention that healing spell of his.

    My party's Landsknecht/Protector/Alchemist/Medic/Hexer.

Dammit, mere mention of Wizardry makes me pine for a game that combined EO's streamlined take on the genre with the PC Wizardry games' variety of classes and skills.

Cause it was fun having a Fairy ninja getting instant kills left and right on creatures using two weapon fighting, but man did those games have clunky combat movement and a ridiculous number of status effects.

I don't know about the password generator in the first game, as I haven't beaten it yet. :P

And eeletrik, you can see what abilities you need to learn for all the grayed out ones by selecting the gray ones in the Custom menu.

Edit - As a general hint for those new to this, the first couple of stratums (10 floors) you have to explore in baby steps. Later in the game you start to become capable of exploring more of the floors you get to as you're mapping them out.

Working on gearing up my seldomly used Dark Hunter for the final(B25) battle, since I was advised that a Ronin wouldn't do much good.

My Hexer obviously isn't going to cut it. Any good advice? Preferred skill sets?

I use P/L and A/M/T. This has turned out to be non-ideal, since the Protector and the Troubador compete for the three (3!) buff slots the game allows, but it more or less works. On the first turn of a generic boss fight I toss up Defender and Stamina (+HP). Then my Troubador sings Refresh (er, MP-regen song; I may have the name wrong) while the Protector goes straight to Shield Bash with an option of Anti-Element skills.

After that the Troubador mostly just chills out and plinks with her bow and uses Items sometimes too. It's okay though because she provides a passive XP boost. And Refresh is reeeeally good for long dungeon-delves!

My Landshark is also possibly non-ideal: I went for the Sword skills and maxed all the "follows elemental damage with an elemental attack" skills. So he has to work with the Alchemist, and if the Alchemist dies or gets headbound it isn't really cool. And his single-target damage with those skills is only about as good as Smite. But it is magical when they land a double AoE on a large pack of monsters. Also, Tornado (three adjacent targets) is pretty handy sometimes. (The Alchemist has maxed the three high-damage single-target spells and has only 1 point in each AoE. He has eschewed poison, which I eventually spec'd out of.)

Medic uses Salve II and Cure III and sometimes Rez or Unbind. I tried frontline Medic, but I must not have the right gear because she mostly just went squish, and anyhow there isn't often much time for Caduceus, what with other people frequently going squish as well.

I don't know what happens with the last boss, but at a guess I'd say a Protector would in fact be a big help.

When it's good, the dungeon in Wizardry Tales of the Forsaken Land just feels alive. But when you have to keep slogging back to where you were and you haven't encountered any fun NPCs for awhile nor has that book of awesome poems updated... then it wears on me. When it works, I think it's better than Etrian Odyssey. But there are times when it feels like it isn't working, and those times suck.

The allied action system is indeed an awesome combat system.

I hope that they give you more inventory space. When you're carrying around all these high-powered healing items that you've won that you don't want to part with, they really cut into your loot collecting.

The NPC segments are really my favorite part. The Wizardry world is full of personality.

Especially the quests. You actually get them from the people in need.

Yeah, when it gets frustrating, it gets painful... but no random battles is a big plus.

And I feel bad for people needing to Ebay for EO1. It's still all over the place down here, much like every Atlus game.

You run your ass away from it is what you do.

It stops moving every few steps so you can easily get by it. In fact, when you enter the third floor, immediately run in the direction you're facing and you'll get past it and able to get to the next room.

Ah, memories. The quest to stay on the 8th floor for 5 days... Last time I did it, I was just bullshitting my way through it, staying in the fountain room where no enemies appear. It took me like a half hour of just stepping back and forth to make the time pass.

Now I'm trying to make the most of those days down there, leveling. I'm only in the evening of day 2 and I've almost been at it for TWO hours (with a few breaks of a few minutes a piece for various things). I hope this doesn't repeat in the sequel.

I'm both sad and glad it didn't have an hour counter. Holy shit. It felt like I spent 100 hours not getting anywhere, not to mention all the dying and redoing lost progress.

edit: I was so beefy by the time I got to the stalkers I was able to luck-kill a few of them before getting unlucky and destroyed. It's been a while though. I remember my strategy mostly being 'hope to get lucky with poison' while using some defense skill or another.

It "only" took me around 70 hours to get the Crown, which is the reward for filling up the bestiary. If I had just used guides for the last stratum and end game bosses I could have shaved fifteen hours off of that. I did spend a good 15 hours though getting the third drop off of the Drake, which I talked about endlessly in the offical thread on the game.

    Hexers are so worth getting.

Ronin seem like they have a lot of potential, but it also looks like it'll take a lot of levelling to get the right skill get for the wide variety the class offers.

But Hexers? Having one of those makes a Dark Hunter worthless, in my opinion. They can do all of the binding, plus weaken the enemy's stats.

Pairing them with a solid Troubadour can make the party unstoppable.
