-- Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection service has always been entirely free of charge, but the company will soon introduce a pay-to-play service for some games, it announced at Game Developers Conference.
"Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Pay And Play" will let users subscribe on a game-by-game basis to certain titles. Nintendo project leader Takashi Aoyama announced the service at GDC, but did not say what upcoming games would require payment for the service, or how much they would cost.
To avoid customer confusion, Pay-And-Play games will have a red icon on the game's box that reads Pay And Play, in place of the traditional blue Wi-Fi Connection icon, which will only be used for games that are free to play.
This is a pretty big change for Nintendo, who has always been adamant about wanting online gameplay to be free. While this might attract more developers to the service with a new revenue stream, it also might confuse consumers -- and be a hassle if the payment system isn't easy. You'll use Wii Points to pay for the online gaming, so it should be interesting to see if this extends to the DS Lite or if it's just restricted to Wii.
So, essentially they are offering far and away the worst online play of any of the consoles, and now they are going to start charging on a game by game basis? This is an absolutely awful plan.
Well considering I dont play my Wii with people other than friends in the same room I could give a rats ass about there "online" capabilities But it still seems to be a stupid idea.

Someone come in and please tell me this is just an April 1st news release that was sent out a month early.
GDC 2008: Pay to Play Your Wii Nintendo announces a mysterious new service.
by Daemon Hatfield
February 22, 2008 - During a Game Developers Conference session called "Planning the Wii Menu" today, Nintendo's Takashi Aoyama announced a new Pay to Play program. This will be a new version of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection (NWFC). Aoyama explained that NWFC will remain a free service, but forthcoming experiences will require users to pay a fee to enjoy. These services will fall under the new NWFC: Pay to Play program. Games that utilize the new service will feature a logo similar to the one used for NWFC but is orange and reads Pay to Play at the bottom.
Unfortunately, Aoyama did not go into details about what games or services we will be paying to play. He did say Nintendo is taking steps to ensure consumers don't mistakenly buy a Pay to Play game with the expectation that they will be able to access the entire game for no extra charge.
I'm not going to lie. I didn't see this coming! I am cautiously optimistic about the price. I mean... They can't charge very much, right? It says a "per game" basis, so I don't see why it would be >$5.

The one thing that's always mystified me about Nintendo is how on earth they can have no idea how to do the whole online thing.
Aoyama said that Nintendo will, in the near future, allow Wii owners to use Wii Points (purchased with a credit card transaction online or on cards in stores) to buy add-on content for games. He said that add-on contents would also be available for disc-based games as well as WiiWare downloadable titles.

Why the crap did I ever make my original name "cloudeagle?"
Animal Crossing Wii ladies and gentlemen. Calling it. Possibly even Mario Kart... but I don't see it being Mario Kart.
My guess is that Animal Crossing Wii will support a form of item transfer like the previous version, but with more customizations. If you're able to design shirts, tiles, hairstyles, wallpapers, etc, etc. The Database could get pretty big for so many people playing. If there is a "World of Animal Crossing" where every city can be pinpointed on a map (ala Second Life style) with major urban areas run by Nintendo it could scale the cost of that game quite a bit.
Or... it could finally be that fucking Harry Potter MMO using the Wiimote as a wand...*cumsplosion*

A lot of good that does if we don't get some kind of external storage. We're not gonna be able to download anything if we can only use the internal storage.
The fact they'll have a special indicator for "pay to play" indicates to me that this will only apply to persistent online games, not peer to peer online. If it is, then it's really fucking stupid.

SURELY with all the talk of Wii Ware and DLC we'll have some sort of storage solution in the near future... right?
Also, the more I think about Nintendo's plan to charge online, the more it sounds like a pain in the ass. Live has a single fee that covers every game (outside of MMOs). But having to subscribe game-by-game? Ergh.

IGN: What specific Wii functionality will creators have access to when making a Wii Ware game? Can they save to SD? Can they do online? Wii Connect 24? Is it like a smaller (but full) Wii product, or is it standalone?
Prata: The Wii Ware developers will have access to the same functionality as they would a regular Wii disc game. The specifics you mentioned such as SD and online, Wii Connect 24, and episodic content is all there. They key point I want to stress though is that it isn't required. Sometimes you make a game and it's best expressed as a single player game or multiplayer game, and the advantage here is that we're leaving it to the creators to focus their resources on the areas that best express their ideas. We won't force their hand into functions or features that may or may not add value to the consumer.
I really don't think this is something you can point at nintendo and say "fuck you". Because I doubt nintendo is going to use the method.
I think this is just nintendo saying "look, we have no online infrastructure but we want 3rd parties to develop games for the wii so we're going to allow them to charge if they want".
Well, this could turn out to fuck Nintendo right in the ass.
Or it could end up doing little. I'm going to wait and see what kind of games the PtP thing applies to before getting angry.
Unless their new "pay to play" games have a persistent friends list (without friends codes), voice chat, invitation in game to other games, and all the other features that I can pay 5 dollars a month for on live this is a horrible idea.
How much are they going to charge a month for this (possibly per game)? $5? Why the fuck would anyone pay that when you can pay $5 and get quality online across the whole of live?

However, I would be glad to pay to play an online Pokemon MMO. Hint hint, Nintendo.

Brawl is out in Japan, and has free online. It would be stupid to assume that Nintendo would force the Americas to pay for online.
If it's for online in general, then I give them a big Fuck You.
It'll probably be for games that have more operating costs than the typical peer-to-peer games that use the service so far.
But I'm not paying for it in any case.

Also, Nintendo games will now have DLC.

I swear to God, Nintendo, I will forsake you if you fuck it up. The only reason I'm putting up with your crap FC's is because the service is free.
I'll try and find it...
Edit, found it:

This isn't that unusual.
