Any new good anime out there?

tehkensaitehkensai Registered User regular
edited February 2008 in Help / Advice Forum
I've been looking for a new anime series to get into recently. Ive already seen most or all of these series:

Bleach
Fullmetal Alchemist
Trinity Blood(watching through it currently, but it just doesnt seem to...really come together to me.)
Speed Grapher(great, great anime series.)

I usually prefer anime that has an actual, good, coherent plot-most of the ones I like tend to have more adultish themes- And stuff like One Piece I hate.

Any suggestions?

Samurai 7 is good, but then again I'm a huge fan of the source material.

Hell I even somewhat enjoyed Seven Samurai 20xx

I also just jumped into Devil May Cry.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and 2nd Gig were enjoyable. I haven't watched any of the movies yet though.

Aww, why the One Piece hate

I'll recommend Gurren Lagann, Gundam 00, and Death Note.

EDIT: Also the anime thread in D&D is always a good resource.

Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society is a film that takes place after 2nd Gig.

The other Ghost in the Shell films are the adaptation of the manga, and then Innocence, which takes place after the adaptation, though it uses a story from the original manga as inspiration for part of the plot.

Forget about new, you've got a lot to catch up on. What comes to mind:

    Cowboy Bebop
    Samurai Champloo
Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex 1 & 2
    Paranoia Agent
    Trigun

I may catch some shit, but fuck it...

    Naruto.

Since you would be starting from the begining, it would be easy to skip worthless episodes, and watch the fights. The series starts going downhill after the last main arc (Which I won't name for spoilers sake), but it's worth watching.

It get's pretty good as the series goes on, and I wouldn't go as far as you did.
Though again, it's probably all about preferences.

Furi Kuri is an excellent one but damn weird.

History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi is funny and on par if not better than Ranma 1/2.

    Evangelion is a must watch.

Full Metal Panic is also a great series. They're just taking their sweet time with getting the manga to NA and getting the next series animated.

    Bleach is decent.

    Yu Yu Hakushow is good.

Outlaw Star is worth watching once.

Berserk is getting old but it's still great, just not for the squmish.

    Bastard is just awesome.

Excel Saga is funny as hell but it also has a lot of inside anime jokes.

This Ugly yet Beautiful World is good.

    Shakugan no Shana

Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge aka The Wallflower

I am also looking for good anime. I've seen everything listed above and tons of others. Im looking for good, (think Paprika\ Furi Kuri\ Perfect Blue, not one piece or bleach.), obscure stuff that isn't usually on peoples lists, simply because it's fairly unknown or not on adult swim and the anime network. I hunger for real Anime! Old or new.

Claymore then, it's still pretty new and I doubt it will be shown on Cartoon Network. I'm also disappointed in Anime Network on Comcast. There is also Clanned and Azumanga Daioh as school comedies.

If you want new anime that is still under the radar in the US then give http://www.animesuki.com/ a try.

The more philosophical and/or laid-back an anime is, the more likely it isn't going to be broadcast on television or hit the mainstream here in the US. Try checking out any series that Yoshitoshi ABe has had a hand in working on.

Deathnote was good for awhile but what ruined it for me was not following the manga so the anime had a crappy ending and it's currently being aired on Adult Swim.

Or that, in this thread about people who aren't hardcore enough into anime to constantly grab fan subs, hardly any of us have seen a show that doesn't start coming out in the US until tomorrow.

As for the dude who said Claymore won't air on Adult Swim: Funimation just licensed it, so it is a possibility (if not for another year or so).

As for the OP, RahXephon is a great series that can be found for cheap now. Just avoid the movie, as it's a retelling of the series that changes the plot and completely spoils all the twists and turns that made the series great by telling them to you in the very beginning of the film.

I am in freaking love with Eureka Seven, my personal favorite anime right now.
Other gooduns (Sorry if any repeats):
    Samurai Champloo
    FLCL
Samurai X ( Or Ruroni Kenshin?)
    Witchblade
    Desert Punk
and more that are probably too sappy since you seem to like more actiony shows.

yeah, i gotta second this. everybody else is gonna throw the same stuff at you, cowboy bebop, lain, eva, blah blah blah whatever

those are classics and great and all but really, baccano! is a totally new and fun show with a complex, pulp-fiction esque plot (it's told out of order; the episodes progress (mostly) sequentially, but there are three interlocking storylines to figure out, so you might have to rewatch some episodes to fully understand what's going on) and probably the best cast of characters i've ever seen in any anime.

i don't know that i can give you a summary or anything, but let's just say the show involves a train robbery, immortal mobsters, and 1930's new york city. it also has the upside of having american characters that aren't ridiculous stereotypes, if that appeals to you at all.

It's an honest mistake. But yes the anime is good, the books are even better. The first book finally made it's way to North America a year ago and the 2nd book is coming out in March. :)

I love anime series when they're good but I really dislike a lot of them: the long, pointless explanation dialogues, crappily translated or just plain crappy dialogue, the episodes where nothing happens (also included: Flashback episodes), the melodramatic over-the-top emotion, the predictable characters, people screaming eachother's names every two seconds, series that never END, series where everyone dies at the end for very little good reason.... er hem, I could go on. I just don't have the patience to sit through all that just for a few good action sequences.

That being said, the series I recommend are:

    Cowboy Bebop
Wolf's Rain (not as good, and kind of sad)

Cowboy Bebop especially is an unbelievable experience. It is a piece of art to me and in my humble opinion, it is the greatest anime series. The combination of style and action and great animation and soundtrack and dialogue is just so fantastic. Nobody has ever made anything so cool. I can barely put it into words lol - it's a must see (there's 1 movie as well). Who would have ever thought to make a jazz soundtrack for an entire anime series? Someone awesome, that's who. It works.

The series are all back in print now. Funimation bought them when CPM waited too long to renew their license, and they've remastered all the episodes (but kept the original dub) and released each season for $30 a piece.

Most retailers aren't ordering any of the series since it's older, but you can still grab them on amazon or right stuff.

    I really liked:

    Witch Hunter Robin
    Noir
    Blood+
    The Third
    Black Cat
Fate Stay Night (I think this is right)
Love Hina (more for the GF than me, but it was still good.)
    Infinite Ryvius
    Planetes
    Black Lagoon

These run the gamut from drama to ultraviolent to silly, to mystery/thriller.

Also, pretty much every Studio Ghibli movie, if you've missed any.

Tried to pick stuff I haven't seen mentioned yet, I'll try to flesh this list out a bit when I get home. Enjoy!
