Alright I have The Orange Box for PC and Team Fortress 2 and Portal are full of win. BUT! Steam in all it's ungodliness won't let me play Half-Life 2. Let me explain. The game will load but once I start a new game it laods and then my computer shuts down and restars. Valve says I need a new system that supports a higher output of power. It sounds right and a tech-savy friend of mine agrees. But what do you... the people of Penny-Arcade think? Should I dish out the money to upgrade my 5 year old computer that I have taken care of and upgraded lovingly? Or sell out to some new Vista running dealy?

If you had $10 billion, there would be little reason to not buy a new alienware compy every 6 months. But if you have a limited budget, then a cost-benefit analysis becomes relevant. How much $ can you spend comfortably?
Power supplies are hella cheap. I got a 500W one for free on Black Friday. You shouldn't need to spend more than $50, at the high end.
Really? Good power supplies at about the cheapest place around here start at about $80. More if you're looking for a modular (Like the Corsair I have). $50 is the price of the nonames that I wouldn't use to power a calculator.
