Xbox 360: Ever Repeating "Update Available" Message For Games

The last few days I've been having to apply game updates to almost every original Xbox or Xbox 360 game title I throw into my console. At first I thought maybe there was some serious updating going on across the board, but tonight I did some testing and it appears that my console only wants to "remember" the last update I applied. See, yesterday I popped in my original Xbox title "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas", updated it, then switched over to GRAW2 (Xbox 360), which also had to be updated. Today I fire up GTA:SA and sure enough, I'm asked to update again. I do, then switch to GRAW2 out of curiousity, and again I'm prompted to update that again too. I did some testing and it appears that if I update a game, GRAW2 for example, and then exit the game or power off the console, the update seems to stick. If I update another game title and then come back to the first one however, I am prompted to install the update once again.

I know backwards compatibility emulation requires the hard drive, but are game updates applied to the system memory, or the hard drive as well? I'm wondering if my system is going, or if it's the hard drive.

They're applied to the hard drive, and should stick around as long as the game is cached on the hard drive. If you're having to reapply them constantly it seems like a caching problem to me. I believe you can completely clear your cache through the Dashboard menus somewhere, although I don't remember the exact options offhand. I'd try that and see if it starts working properly.
