DVD - > *.avi or *.mov conversion that doesn't suck

I occasionally have to convert DVD video to something I can edit down in Flash Video Encoder, usually an MOV file.

Unfortunately I have no really solid program that does this, usually I just get a trial of something or whatever.

Does anyone know a high quality program that does this?

Free would be nice but I'll go for anything under $100 that I can install on 4-5 machines.

    PC or Mac? Honestly, I use Handbrake for just about DVD => * now. It's free too, so yay.

    Either.. however ultimately I would like to have a PC solution since that's what the office runs.

    Handbrake will run on both platforms (Linux too if you're so inclined). Give it a shot if you haven't tried it before.

    Just a warning, handbrake is far far from brilliant on windows when it comes to performance. Wish it wasn't true but it is. On the mac however it screams if you have a recent mac.

    Yeah, I downloaded it, looks promising. Don't really give a damn how fast it does it, as long as it does it.

    Thanks for the info, I would have never found that on my own.

    Googling for DVD rippers is... frightening.
