Study: Video Game Addiction Similar to Aspergers

http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/study-video-game-addiction-similar-to-aspergers/?biz=1
At the ongoing British Psychological Society's Annual Conference in Dublin this week new research is being presented on the effects of computer game addiction. According to Dr. John Charlton of the University of Bolton and Ian Danforth of Whitman College, USA, gamers who appear to be addicted to playing computer/video games show some of the same personality traits as people with Aspergers syndrome (a variety of high functioning autism).

For the study, 391 computer game players (86 percent male) were questioned. The researchers looked at relationships between addiction, "high engagement" and personality. "They found that the closer the players got to addiction the more likely they were to display negative personality traits. And that as players showed more signs of addiction they were increasingly characterized by three personality traits that would normally be associated with Aspergers... These were neuroticism, and lack of extraversion and agreeableness," the report stated.

Charlton and Danforth don't believe these game "addicts" are classifiable as having Aspergers syndrome but they do "share some of the same characteristics because they find it easier to empathize with computer systems than other people."

"The thinking in the field is that there is a scale along which people, even those considered to be 'normal', can be placed upon. And that people such as engineers, mathematicians and computer scientists are nearer to the non-empathizing, systemizing, end of the spectrum, with people with Aspergers syndrome even further along again," said Charlton. "Our research supports the idea that people who are heavily involved in game playing may be nearer to autistic spectrum disorders than people who have no interest in gaming."

Hmmm...Discuss!

So, they're saying that people who are actually addicted to video games tend to be introverted, emotionally unstable, malcontents...

Didn't we already know that? o_O

Who ever paid for that study got swindled good.

Any ways, on a less sarcastic note, I suppose it makes sense. Playing video games in an addictive manner seems more akin to counting everything you see or memorizing a phone book (from a "repetitive task that brings enjoyment aspect") than the other "normal scale" activities and jobs they mention.

I think the point is that people who are addicted to things other than video games tend to have similar character traits to each other regardless of the addiction.
But video gamer addicts don't have those traits, but instead have the similar traits to autistic folks.

That's what it seemed to point at to me. Not so much a comment on video game addiction being worse, but a comment on video game addiction being different.

I really doubt people who are addicted to heroin or cocaine (or cigarettes) are displaying asperger traits.

Aspergers is just a label for personality traits except in severe forms, anyway, and there are a lot of undiagnosed cases out there.
    I am unsurprised.

This is stupid. Why are they talking about specifically Asperger's, instead of generalized Social Anxiety Disorder, which is the more logical conclusion to make.

Sounds more like someone wanted their 15 minutes, so they studied a fairly well-known trend, blew the conclusion out of proportion, and hope to be published in their journal of choice.

Bingo. The people who self-diagnose themselves with this shit are lost to me. I can't understand why you would want to have a disease just to fit in, especially one for being socially inept. It's contradictory. I want to be socially inept, just like everyone else.

Not to say that the people that do have it aren't ridiculously retarded. The millitant ones are trying to fight cures for aspergers because they think that mental retardation is the next step in evolution.

My first response was, "Dicsuss what? The data say what they say..."

Personally, this is great news. Social-misfits have something to do besides just be miserable all day, and tying the less-than-social behavior of game addicted peeps to regular social misfits like mathematicians and engineers lends greater credence and legitimacy to video games.

However, please don't try to diminish the effects of social disorders with the ramblings of a small, relatively extreme group of people.

I can feel my brain breaking just being at that forum.

Their entire premise is "These things aren't problems, they're who people are. Autism/Aspergers aren't things to be "fixed", they're things for people to accept as a "new" way of life."

    Or something.

It's just...this isn't true. Aspergers discussion and the rampant self-diagnosis aside, Autism is a known genetic defect that probably can be cured. What these people are saying is the equivalent to a group up and stating that since AIDS is something that is now part of society we should stop trying to "cure" it and start "accepting" those who have it and better understand their lifestyle. Or instead of AIDS which is a contracted result of a virus, how about Diabetes. It's genetic. It's due to malfunctions in the bodies normal functions. Should we just abandon all hope to "cure" diabetes and rather "learn to live with it"?

BAH, I honestly can't comprehend the line of thought that would lead to this mindset.
