I've been getting into The Misfits as of late, but I'm disappointed in the lack of well-recorded music. Anyways, it's still great and I'd love to listen to similar bands with the same aggressive play-style and (this is a long shot) vocals that are at least remotely as good as Glenn Danzig's. The songs I've liked the most so far:

Hybrid Moments

Astro Zombies

Night of The Living Dead

Hatebreeder

20 Eyes

I Turned Into a Martian

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Pennywise did a cover of Astro Zombies, which I like better than the original.

For other bands within the range of hardcore/punk, but not necessarily like The Misfits:
    Black Flag
    TSOL
    Rancid
    Operation Ivy
    Suicidal Tendencies
    Propagandhi

    Pretty well known names.

If you're looking for a band in a similar genre, there's the Horrorpops, but it has a female vocalist. I don't really know what you mean by Danzig having a great voice.

Roughly, AFI's Black Sails in the Sunset and Art of Drowning era. There was an EP in there too where they covered Halloween.

I recommend the Famous Monsters album of theirs if you haven't already got it. Also a couple of songs on Cuts from the Crypt are good. American Psycho as an album is also worth getting. The songs on those albums are of higher quality recordings compared to their earlier stuff.

falsedef has a pretty good list. You might like some of these too. These are some of my personal favorites.

    Dead Kennedys
    Bad Religion
    Anti-Flag
    Rancid
    The Vandals
    Descendents

Have you ever checked out last.fm and their similar artist playlist?

    Minor Threat
    Fugazi

(I think Ian is better than Glen)

    Also look at Bad Brains

I am not so in to punk anymore, but I still regularly listen to those three bands.

Not so much punk, but I always recommend the Melvins. Check out Bullhead, I love all of their records, but I always recommend Bullhead first.

In certain songs he sounds eerily similar to Kermit the Frog. Regardless most of the stuff here is solid. I particularly <3 Dead Kennedy's and Rancid. I'll also throw NOFX in as a recommendation.

...Just because people are punk doesn't mean they sound like the misfits. On that note.

There was a cover project made dedicated to the Misfits. I think it goes by the title "Violent World" a bunch of punk/horrorpunk bands. It will at least shed some light on other things.

As for Danzig like stuff you can check out Danzig the band or the other one..Samhein, I think? More metally, but still.

And then there was one DAvey Havok project with some of the guys from samhein. Title is Son of Sam.

It's good music if you do not hate havok, and the music sounds misfitsy

Part of the reason that I liked the Misfits so much is that all their albums sounded like shit, recording-wise. Static Age in the first box set sounds much better than the "cleaned up" CD release.

You might like Social Distortion's early stuff. Most similar thing I can think of to the Misfits at the moment. Check out the Cramps too.

Social D is one of my all time favorites. Not sure I'd lump them in the same category as the Misfits. Social D is more punk/rockabilly.

Keep in mind that this stuff does NOT have Danzig doing vocals. All of the songs listed in the OP are from when Danzig was in the band.

Balzac is a band you would probably like to check out.

Fixed that for you. I almost recommended them but the OP said he wanted bands which are similar in sound and not necessarily subject matter.

    the Necromantix < tiger army

For one thing, the tiger army never dies.

    See also

    Coffin Cats

    Mad Sin

    The Cramps

    12 step rebels

    Horton Heat

Also the Dwarves. The dwarves sound nothing like the Missfits but just listen to them anyway because I said so.

Sorry to revive a dead thread, but I really like Minor Threat and I'm warming up to the more hardcore stuff which I didn't like before. Nekromantix...not really. Hate the lead singer's voice.

OK, so noone in this thread listens to horrorpunk apparently. Some people listed some psychobilly bands(tiger army, nekromantix, dementia 13) that usually goes hand in hand, but it isn't the same. People listed punk, but if you want stuff that's similar (actually the whole horror punk genre is practically a misfits tribute)

    calabrese
    zombeast
    blitzkid
    cancerslug
    the other
    nim vind.

also check out danzig/samhain, if you haven't already.

    stuff like minor threat:
    gorilla biscuits
black flag (early stuff. fuck henry rollins era, besides damaged)
    circle jerks
    cro-mags
    give up the ghost/american nightmare

Wow, did you even read his post? He said he wanted stylistically similar music. The Misfits basically just started doing what the Ramones were already doing except they sang about horror and sci-fi movies. The Ramones were also way tighter. As far as vocals go Joey was an incredible singer. While he doesn't necessarily sound like Danzig, both of them do what they do well. The Ramones, in my opinion are much more like what he was after than most of those other replies. Type O Negative? What?
