Invalid Key out of the box?

So I just got the Orange Box, wee Portal and all the other goodies. I put it into my compy, enter the key, and get an Invalid key message. This game wasn't stolen, and I triple checked that I had all the characters right. So did someone steal my key with a key gen program, or is there something else amiss?

I went through the Steam Support hoops and filed a question, but I was wondering if anyone else has had similar issues and might share on how to resolve it. Cause I want to play this damn game already!

Much thanks.

The keygen thing is possible. In my experience with some games this happened on in the past it's more likely that the game was bought somewhere with a lenient return policy and returned after ripping and using the key. What retailer did you buy the game at? Some (few these days) will take software returns, and many of those just end up re-shrinkwrapping the product and putting it back on the shelves.

I hope someone gets their whole steam account banned.

I got the game at Circuit City. I am pretty sure that I can exchange the game for one that has a working key, but I was wondering if the stolen-key-through-a-key-gen is the only thing that could be up. I mean, this isn't a common issue or anything, right?

It happens once in a while. My friend had a similiar problem with the orange box actually not too long ago. Kinda a coincidence...

This is going to sound weird but when you were putting in the key when you entered numbers did you use the keypad on the right of the keyboard or the numbers across the top.

I know you think that might not make a difference, but honestly try it both ways.

I used to work for IT and one of our products had its key only work if you entered the numbers from the keypad to the right only, if you used the keys across the top, it would not accept the key.

Just something to throw out there.

Hmm, that is an interesting concept. I will definitely give it a try. I am just not looking forward to the two-hour drive it will take me to get back to civilization and a Circuit City, bleh.

    Thanks for the info.

This kind of stuff is not too uncommon. I bought a copy of Diablo II recently that I couldn't use online half the time because someone was playing with the key!

Well, I just checked my response from Steam's tech support, and it turns out that one of the systems they use to verify CD keys went down over the weekend. I just tried it, and am already on Disk 2 for the install. Helpful customer support, GO!

Thanks all for the great responses!
