I'm doing a hobby garden this year and would like to try and grow some wheat. Nothing serious, I just like to try different planets.
I tried finding "wheat seeds" online, but the only thing that turns up is "Wheat Grass" which I don't think is the same thing. What is the correct name for "common Wheat" that I could use to find it's seeds?
I want to grow it so that I have wheat for bread and beer and straw left over.
What kind of space do you have? The best soil in the best part of the world will yield between 45-70bu/acre, so assuming you get an outlandish amount like 20bu/acre, you'll still need a good 1100ft^2 just to get enough wheat to produce 30lbs of whole wheat flour. That number further drops to ~22lbs if you want white flour. That's also assuming a really fantastic yield, which you most probably won't get. Plus, I don't know of a place that would mill such a ridiculously small amount of flour, so I really don't know how you'd actually turn the wheat into flour.

That was the extent of my wheat knowledge. Winter wheat and its ilk is basically just feed wheat for livestock and not what you want at all, fyi. No idea about wheatgrasses.

"Wheat Grass" is just "babby" Wheat.
If you let it keep growing it turns to "wheat",
I would doubt seeds sold as "wheat grass" are going to be useful for growing actual full-grown wheat, since it's bred to be harvested as wheat grass. Also, I don't know how big your "hobby garden" is, but you're going to need a serious amount to be able to produce flour for baking, etc, and then you have to harvest, thresh, mill, etc. All that is going to cost you more than just buying flour (economies of scale.) Why don't you try planting some vegetables or something, fresh vegetables are a much better result in a home garden as they're something you can't always get easily.

There are a number of different strains for Spring Wheat and Durum, but those might help you narrow down your search.
thanks.
