Ya know the one. It's where there are thumbnails on a side of the screen and then hovering over them makes the photo appear in full size on the other side of the page. What would that be called and how would I learn how to do it?

What he is describing is a basic javascript image rollover gallery.
It requires basic javascript knowledge and a dash of DOM scripting.
But I'm sure the links that Fatman provided will get you where you need to go without actually having to learn that stuff.
