as a barbarian, I can say that it is true that we have issues killing tank classes. Mostly because they resist all our knockbacks, which, at least to me, is the core of my PvP strategy.

This doesn't matter though, because it's fairly easy to run from them, and we have such an easy time destroying casters and other rogues that there's still an abundance of targets on the battlefield for us to focus on instead

Dude. Just set up your account to "Pay by Cash" and you don't need to put in a credit card or game card.

This is the first game since UO that has let you play without some sort of credit info.

I had to guess my old credit card number which i cut up months ago to stop myself using it. I guess i'll need to get a new one before the free month is up and they check the credit card!

Going to post the class impressions from earlier and change a few for what I've noticed:
    captaink wrote: »
These seem to be overall impressions

Guardian: Rogues can't touch Guardians in PVP, at all.
Conquerer: Pretty awesome. Good DPS for a supposed tank class. Tough as hell in PVP, just like the other Soldiers.
Dark Templar: Tough, very hard to kill, low DPS

Barbarian: Fun as hell. Also, fun as hell.
Assassin: A bloo, a bloo, nobody likes assassins post 40 apparently.
Ranger: Mixed, seem good in PvP. Some annoying abilities though. Be prepared to do a lot of weapon switching at early levels. Needs more hotbars!

Tempest of Set: Some have trouble, most seem to be nuking and AoEing with abandon. Can currently place unlimited AoE totems and totally waste huge groups of mobs.
Priest of Mitra: A "nerf" fixed a really high damage ability, but they're still quite soloable and very, very strong.
Bear Shaman: When played properly, Bear Shamans are really damned difficult to kill. Needs a lot of self-buffing, though.

Demonologist: Few high-damage nukes, supposedly useless pets that just kind of act as a buff.
Herald of Xotli: Melee-range glass cannons. Have seen a few played very, very well that were really good at low-level PVP.
Necromancer: everyone seems to get bored and fed up really quickly

Mixture of my impressions and the boards.

I think I might ditch my Demonologist for a bit and start a melee character... They have some neat abilities, but I'm having serious issues trying to solo with that class (maybe I'm not doing it right?) Melee seems like a lot of fun in this game anyway

Generally you can just close the window and log into your free time. I'm not sure if AoC works the same way, but WoW defaults you to the CC payment plan shit when you make a new account but it is un-necessary.

For those having some issues with leveling. I'm not sure where this came from originally but it was reposted by my guild leader, and contains some decent info about how to find quests at higher levels.

*Where to Quest at Level X*

    -General Tips-
    -Accept every quest you see.
    -Visit every zone.
-Explore since some quest givers are in wierd locations.
-All dungeons pre 40 are soloable so go explore them.
-If you are stuck in a zone on quests, as in they are too hard or simply bugged, go to a different one.
-Spend some time to randomly kill stuff, yes some stuff drops items that start quests.
-Revisit the main towns to search for quest givers.
-Leaving an instance and reforming/joining a group supposedly resets the instance unless it is a single player instance, like the vila quests in Noble District.
-By the minimap there is a button that allows you to change your instance so if the one you are in is crowded click it and switch to another that might be empty.
-When questing kill EVERYTHING along the way. Don't avoid mobs

1-20 finish your destinay quest in Tortage.

20+ It is possible to pick up gathering professions at 20 in Poitain, Purple Lotus Swamp, and Lacheish Plains(DONT GO HERE IT IS BUGGED ATM). These quests give about 5k xp each but you can level up gathering with them. *WARNING* Respecing feats while having crafting/gathering skills will reset those but you won't be able to get the quests again *WARNING*

20-40 Do every quest you see in Connal Valley, Kopshef Province, and Wildlands. Everytime you finish one of these run it through again to make sure you didn't miss anything. Then run through the others. once all are done run through them all again, some quests only become available at upper levels. Make sure to run through Conarch Village, Khemi, and Old Tarantia a few times to see any quests. There should be quests for the 20-40 instances as well that you get as you level up. At 40ish get all the Burning Soul quests(Zelata has about 4 chains into here which you should get if you cleared the first 3 mentioned zones). In total I hat 7 Burning Soul Quests. Also some of the Wild Lands quests lead you into Border Ranges.

35-40 I ran through Black Castle/Pyramid of the Ancients/Treassury of the Ancients at about 38/39 in Kopshef Province and that got me 2 good levels. Although there are few quests in each of these until you hit their level range.

40-50 Do Noble District in Tarantia and Field of the Dead. If you need more XP try grinding mobs in eiher the vilas in Noble District or the big NPC camps in FoTD.

50-55 You get 7 quests for Cistern/Main System in Noble District at 50 and then I think 2-3 more at 52. This is a world zone that has VERY quick respawn so don't attempt without 5-6 people. It also means you can see people not in your group. If you get a good group its a decent walkthrough. I didn't enter the undead area much but in the Main System sewer area the mushrooms were scarce.

    50-60 Eiglophian mountains

52-57 It is possible to grind these levels in the cannibal caves in Eiglophian Mountains. I will grind here till about 59 since it doesn't look like Eiglophian mountains will have enough quests to take me to 60.

    *Bugged Quests Section*

    -Noble District-
-The Thief- As you get to the second floor on your left will be an entrance with vines on either side. Go to the left set and run by them spamming U to try to climb. After that there is another set of vines that can't be click but must be instead climbed using U. Experiment with positioning. You need between 300 and 350 climbing I believe.
-Noble Beauty(sp?) - The NPCs don't turn hostile after talking to them so you can't kill them. I have heard rumors of trying to swing and them turning hostile but haven't had any luck.
-Arena in Noble District Bar - All these quests are buggy. If you can't do it drop it and try to restart it. The first part where you have to kill Aquilonius(sp?) is very bugged so try to talk to him and swing and eventually you will kill him.
-Black Skulls - One guy is by a pool of blood by the Cistern Dungeon. Another guy patrols in the north of the Noble Open Square type area, Middle north of the zone, The last guy is by the burning bodies in the barracks area if I recall correctly.
    -Hopshef Province-
-Enter the Pyramid in Pyramid of the Ancients- Quest doesn't Update so you can't get the next part of the chain.
-Body part quest in Pyramid of the Ancients - The body parts sometimes bug and don't respawn. You could try to exit instance and reform group then go back in.
-Rescue Chick in pyramid of the Ancients - Won't respawn after first person gets it. You could tyr to exit instance and reform group then go back in.
-Destinty Quest - There is a climbing point near the stone arch by the bandits, need 100 to climb it. DON'T KILL THE DEMON BEFORE YOU DO THE LOTUS ON THE ALTAR. If you do you have to either exit the instance and re-enter or relog. (Thanks jattomcat)
    -Wildlands of Zelata-
Wounded Child - The child has a VERY long respawn time. One trick is to check your instances, by the minimap there is an arrow where you can click to change it, and if you see a new one pop up switch to there and run to here location, she is at the bottom of the cliff, to see if she is there.

And for any of those getting griefed in a zone: just switch instances. It's the little arrow by the mini map. There's usually around 3-5 instances per zone.

So the normal zones are instanced? D: that's kind of the suck. Isn't the point to have one large connected environment?

The normal zones get instanced based on the amount of players in the zone. Switching instances works at lower levels right now since the zones are so populated, but at 40+ there is usually only one instance (so far).

And why is it a bad thing to have multiple instances of one zone? Sharing a quest area with a shit ton of other people is not a whole lot of fun. There's still people around, but the instancing makes it so that it's never too crowded.

So here's some documentation of my chief glaring problem with the game, PC/NPC draw in.

The issue being that character models well within my view distance settings do not draw in at times. This is annoying with NPCs and can totally ruin a PvP fight when you lose your target. Some pics follow, both of me seeing nothing, then creeping forward about 3 feet and them popping into sight.

First, an NPC example (not going to inline as they're 250KB images even at 50% quality):

I didn't even have to look at your pictures to know exactly what you are talking about. Fucking with every setting non stop hasn't fixed this. Whether on high or low, whatever individual setting, nothing fixes this shit.
So frustrating, especially in PVP servers.

I think I'll come to the PA pvp or pve server. This game is all about numbers and our current guild isn't supporting.

There are different kinds of X1950s. The XT was, at least when I bought it a year and a half ago, the top of the line model of 1950s. It was, I think, the last of the DX9 generation and the best 256MB card you could get. Cards like the 1950 Pro were slower.

Also, like I said, those screenshots have pretty much everything cranked the fuck down aside from 2x AA and draw distances. Low textures/no shadows/etc.. Plus the 40FPS part is with very little on the screen. You can see it tank to 20 with crap going on.

The herald does great DPS and is good in PvE. It's less good in PvP, and has horrible survivability. Can only use 2h swords and cloth armor.

The Dark Templar has low dps but good survivability and decent buffs. Can not use 2h weapons, but can wear heavy armor.

It's kinda funny, because in the lower level areas on Thog, I see Demonologists and Necromancers EVERYWHERE. I haven't played a Demonologist to really know if it's any good, but I've read a lot (mostly on this board) that they are kinda gimp, much like Necros (which I did try and hated).

I think a lot of WoW players are remembering how powerful the pet classes were (and are) there and are counting on getting the same bang for their buck in AoC. Right now I don't think that's the case, but it might pay off after some re-balancing is done.

Demonologists are pretty terrible right now. Their damage just isn't any good past Tortage. Probably a lot of it has to do with the fact that Int isn't actually increasing your magic rating like it's supposed to.

I think also atleast a group of people are approaching pet classes with a view of wow pet classes when they're not exactly the same. Some people are, I think, expecting a class that'll let the pet tank for them. Whereas my brother said, necromancer is more like being a warlock with his imp out. It's just there to do extra damage for you (also he uses his pets to pull). My brother's, lvl 39 now, in agreement with some of the issues posted but he's still enjoying the class (he's focused his build towards aoe). I can't really fully speak for him though and I personally don't know what the class is like beyond grouping with one.

*consults his "What effect if any these settings have on my performance." bible*

Some of this really makes no sense. Medium settings, low settings, high settings with a slice of lemon... My compy just chews it up and spits out a pulpy goo for my consumption. But something, somewhere, is causing a most annoying stutter.

I wonder if I can flat out turn off sound processing of all kinds. That might be it.

Stuttering problems are the worst to figure out. Straight average fps issues are dandy, but doing an impression of a pole axed ox every now and then is considerably more work to track down. It would be less painful if Conan didn't do that file check every time it starts up, I've taken to doing other things between attempts at finding the silvery lock.

I'm bored as crap playing a bear shaman and while I sort of want to play a ranger it really looks like they will be/are gimped and will be horrible for PvP. I'm now debating between a tempest of set and an assassin. How are assassins? From what I hear tempests of set are pretty much awesome so I might just default to that but I want to hear about any experiences from assassins first. My primary goal with the character will be PvP.

For performance issues, the original post in this thread seems very good. http://forums.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?t=13390

I just followed most of the advice on the last section on settings and got basic performance up from the mid-teens to nearly 30 fps. I didn't mess with all the prior computer tune up advice (except to defrag) so no opinion on all that.

One of the key things is the shader model version. If you set it to 2.0 and then mess with just about any other slider affected by the shader, it will revert to 3.0 automatically. So, make sure setting to 2.0 is the absolute last thing you do before clicking apply and then ok. I did about a half hour of testing and under 2.0 I think you can see everything you need to, most importantly the particle effects for things like glowing quiest items and loot. I didn't set particle draw distance to 0 like this guy suggests, concerned like he is that I wouldn't see any at all, so I set the slider about a quarter of the way in. This seems to let me see stuff using particles at a decent distance.

so things i learned last night.

1.ToS are incredible and make things in a group stupid easy.
    2.we need more ToS.

I think I'm gonna give ToS a shot. We have too many melee and not enough casters.

    So there's one.

So... I'm looking at the scripting stuff and it looks like I can use it to fuck with people's graphical and audio settings.

How long do you think it would take me to get banned for pulling that shit though?
