What does my wife play after Paper/Mario/Rpg?

Hopefully I can post this in the Help / Advice Forum, even though it has to do with games, I need help!

So over the past 3-4 years since we've been married my wife has really been into WoW. It was an unhealthy obsession that led me to my only solution: Console RPGs. I quickly got her into playing Mario RPG (snes) for a while, which she quickly beat. At the time Paper Mario Thousand Years Door (or whatever its called) came out for Gamecube, and I got that for her. She loved it, played it until the end. Then more recently in January I got her Paper Mario (n64) on the virtual console on the Wii, which she just finished a few days ago, and she's looking for something else to play.

Unfortunately, she can't get into Final Fantasy games- she doesn't like the realistic look and the non-interactive action. To clarify, in the mario games you can hit a button while attacking and perform more advanced moved.

I had her try Earthbound, but the combat in that is bland (for her)- you don't see anyones weapons, and its a simple "attack, attack attack, magic" type game which requires very little interaction from the player after you spot off the commands.

My question is- what RPG can I get her into next? Something that requires user input during action to somehow make it better. This can be for any system, I've got em all.

Thanks!

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga on the GBA would be a perfect choice and is exactly what you're looking for.

If she has a DS she could also play Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.

The World Ends With You is pretty similar to Mario RPG in some ways.

    EDIT: For the Nintendo DS.

Kingdom Hearts I and II on Playstation is a good try. It's more of an action RPG, and filled with Disney love.
Or she could finish off the Paper Mario series with Super Paper Mario on Wii as well. It's not turn based like the other Paper Marios, it plays more like a 2D mario game with a more RPG like story.

I believe I had her try both of the mario & luigi games for GBA and DS, and I don't think she got into them at the time. It might be time for me to get those again and have her try them. She likes to fall asleep at night playing her DS.. I think Clubhouse Games (something that doesn't take a lot of thought and she can turn off at any time without repercussions)

Kingdom Hearts I and II might be a good idea- I personally didn't play them, but I had the GBA one (i think? or was it DS)- but I remember it being more of an action RPG like Secret of Mana more than a traditional.

She won't play Super Paper Mario for Wii- I've got it, and its too platformy for her :(.

I'll look into getting the Mario & Luigi games again, those are great ideas that I forgot about.

While you're getting her a DS, there are three distinctly different Pokémon games that are compatible with it (Fire Red/Leaf Green, Ruby/Emerald/Sapphire, Diamond/Pearl). Recommended play in that order.

We've both got DS' right now, and I don't know if I'd consider any of the Pokémon games 'action rpgs' - not that i'm looking for something with action, but theres no visual combat in it. I've already got Diamond that I could have her try, but I'm just sort of 'meh' on that one.

Its almost like she likes 'rpgs' that take a little bit of effort, but no twitch. Puzzle Quest was an awesome game for her- she liked leveling up, but also enjoyed the puzzle aspect because as you leveled it actually felt like you were doing something.

Then definitely "The World Ends With You" because Pokemon gets very grindy. TWEWY has some grinding stuff but it is fun as hell. Plus, you get exp when you're not playing.

How about Legend of the Dragoon for uh, Playstation 1 I think? It has a lot of interaction with the player (each character has a different method of activating it's special attack - ranging from 'hit this button at the right time' to 'hit this pattern in the right time' etc.)

It has a lot of basic RPG elements, and allows for great interaction in combat.

Lost Odyssey? (xbox) The Ring break system means you can do more stuff with every attack if you have a half decent sense of timing, other than that its like any other RPG/FF style line-um up fighter.

Story is decent, good writing, and it lets you custom play different classes without going to hard into class setup (as each character corresponds to a class type, Mack=Monk, Ming=Cleric, etc) You can play it easy going or super picky, its really up to you. It has most of what I like about the FF series, cept you dont have to sit through an hour of summons every gd turn, and player control on every hit keeps one physically involved with combat.

You didnt specify a Nintendo requirement as seems to be the pattern so far, so I'm throwing in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

Have you tried the Legend Of Zelda series? Its not very RPGish but it meets the Actiony requirements quite well. I actually liked Fable alot too if you have an xbox, you can actually see yourself change as you level up and see the effects of becoming more powerful (plus its cheap)

Also I might suggest a tactics game like Disgea of FFTA. Or maybe more of an RTS game like Revenant Wings or Lost Magic.

Theres actually a ton of options depending on how much you want to stray from the RPG genre.

Tales of Symphonia would be a solid choice. Cartoony, action RPG, you can see all your weapons, not terrible story or voice acting, for the Gamecube.

Rogue Galaxy sounds like it could be up her alley, too. Pretty, cel-shaded graphics, immersive action RPG battle system ala Kingdom Hearts, you can see your weapons, also not terrible story or voice acting.

The Tales games are all pretty hard combat wise, though. In combat they play more like Double Dragon than Final Fantasy. And they're not easy, either.

I think this is an important aspect of the OP that may have been overlooked (?).... She's kicked her WoW habit, but is she still obsessive/addicted to gaming? It's one thing to enjoy playing games, but quite another if she's turned it into a compulsion.

As for games, the Kingdom Hearts games were enjoyable, lots of little things to do and unlock, mini games and whatnot to supplement the main storyline...plus who doesn't love some disney goodness... :)

A bit of a stretch, but if more ideas are needed, then perhaps tactical RPGs could be an area to look into? Games like Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Advance Wars (sorry to stick to just one platform, my own experience is limited). The genre might not have the kind of tactile action it sounds like you're looking for, and the more character oriented ones still have a bit of the 'attack, attack, magic' thing going on, but the element of positioning units and such might make the menus more palatable.

What about Earthbound? It's playful, yet entertaining. It's an RPG, but it's not a game of hardcore level grinding or random monster battling. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

According to the interview with Major Nelson, the soon-to-be-release Penny Arcade Adventures' combat will involve real-time interactions, ie pulling the left or right trigger at the right time to block an enemy attack.

    Mother 3 (Earthbound Sequel) - GBA -
    Wikipedia wrote:
"Once again, the game retains the Dragon Quest-style battle system Mother and EarthBound had (although this time at a much quicker pace), but Mother 3 adds an extra twist in the form of the Music combo system. Depending on how well the player presses the A Button in-sync to the lead enemy's "theme" (each enemy has their own respective beat, some even possessing variable tempos), he or she can perform up to 16 hits of damaging combos on the game's enemies."

maybe Chrono Trigger, you get different combo attacks based on your group members and their specialties, but the characters are more like Final Fantasy.

An excellent idea. I was already going to pick this up and have my wife play it.

This is not going to work- it can't be an actual action game (or a platformer). This also involves Legend of Zelda or any of those, simply because it requires twitch movements and will drive her crazy. She needs CONTROLLED action... like how it is in Paper Mario where you're given a turn to decide your moves, and then the controlled action comes when she has to use the action button while jumping on an enemy.

She's already got two level 50s and beat the game with each.. so we're good there.

Yeah but according to some reviews you need real twitch reflexes to nail them, so maybe this isn't the best option.

Thats ok. It sounds just like how they did it in Paper Mario, still requires twitch reflexes, but it was in a controlled non-action environment. If I like the 360 one I might even get her a copy on Windows so I can still play GTA4 if she wants to play at the same time...
