The 8800GTS in 320 or 640 MB configurations is the old shitty version; do not buy it ever. The 512 MB version is the new, awesome version. The 3870 or 9600GT are both cheaper and also quite powerful, and the 8800GT is midway between the 9600GT and the 8800GTS-512. The 9800GTX only barely outdoes the 8800GTS-512.

...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.

Ok so it seems conventional wisdom is that the 512Mb 8800 GTS is the card to choose at the moment in terms of bang for your buck. Looking in to it though, the prices (in AUD) near me are as follows:

    9600GT (512M) $185
    8800GT (512M) $229
    8800GTS (512M) $325
    9800GTX (512M) $360

My system currently isnt that hot - its a single core AMD 3700+, 2Gb of whatever memory, currently using a radeon x1800xtx card. I've read that tomshardware link though, and think i'll still get best gains by going with a new gfx card first. Going by the above prices i'm thinking the 8800GT might be the better option at the moment. Thoughts?

at those prices I'd get the 8800GT maybe

That's a wee bit too big a price gap between the GT and GTS.

This is probably the 4th time I've posted this today, but I want everyone to know. HP computers (and I'm sure many other storebought brands) from this generation will not fit an EVGA 8800 GTS. Probably won't fit any of the other ones, either. The power connectors stick straight up in the path of the card, instead of lying flat like other motherboards. My old HP required some serious cutting of the card's plastic casing to get it to fit that one as well. The new ones won't fit it period.
