For the last several years of my life I have been pursuing the white whale known as "Duke Nukem Forever". After only recently coming to the realization that by the time this game ships I will most likely be dead, I decided that It was time dug through my CD collection an played the classic DN3D for the first time in ages. Unfortunately, I seem to have run into some problems.
The game installs fine, however it doesn't have any sound and after a few seconds of gameplay the program either freezes or flat out crashes. Other times when I try to boot it up all I get is a flashing screen with crazy distorted pictures all over it.
Im assuming this is because im trying to run such an old game on XP, however I could be wrong (and most likely am) and was wondering if anyone knows what the problem is and if theres a fix for it.
A group has come up with a high resolution pack. I installed it with the demo and was able to run under windows xp. I improved game play a lot IMO. Check it out.
Remember "Duke Nukem 3D", the great first-person shooter 3D Realms released back in 1996? Its cool protagonist, ingame atmosphere, original weaponry and many other features make it worth playing even today.
For all Duke fans who want to play the game again in a modern Windows environment with 3D accelerated graphics, the Duke3D community has created the High Resolution Pack (HRP). Utilizing the amazing skills of various texturing and modelling artists, the project´s goal is to replace all textures and sprites with high-res versions, optimizing it for latest OpenGL ports.
All you need is the "duke3d.grp" file from your original Duke3D v1.3d or Atomic (v1.5) CD-ROM. You can also play with the shareware version avaliable here.

Wow thats nice, is there any way to run it without the hi res texture pack though? Not to sound ungrateful but I am trying to play it for nostalgic value.

Either way ill be downloading that patch 8-)
If you want to play it exactly like when it was released, you'll most likely need DOSBox.

Works like a charm, thank you.

Forget DOSBox, get JDuke, from the author of JDoom. Ken Silverman (the original engine author) helped him rewrite the BUILD engine as a native Win32 program, enhanced out the wazoo. Like JDoom the game can now run in true 3d (without vertical stretching to create the illusion of look up/down) in newer resolutions, with working sound, and TCP/IP netplay.
Works for Shadow Warrior and the BUILD level editor as well, might even work for Blood.

Anyway, I think it's the Jonof source port that is the best one. That plus hi-res texture pack = awesome.

I'm not seeing JDoom, but I swear there was one ... ah, another person who's name starts with J made that. Funny how they accomplish the same things
