So guys, I live in the Nevada desert and when I look outside, it's brown and dusty and when it's sunny, sometimes the light is really harsh and when it's overcast or really, really windy and the air fills with dust, everything is a lot more dull and not really all that vibrant.
Is there something wrong with my desert? This thread convinced me that maybe it should be more colorful and look prettier and be neutral in terms of lighting all the time.
Hi5 pancake
I was born in nevada, and go up there every once in a while. It really is just brown for days.
And then I compare that with california. Very lush areas, though some are real dry/brown too.
Basically, I thought all the screenshots posted in the OP looked fine for what they meant to do.
Yeah, that game was a big "fuck you" to all those people that bitched about Wind Waker's style.
You want realism? Here's your fucking realism.
And then we all realized how much nicer looking The Wind Waker was.
But TP looked a lot better than WW.

Why, that game wasn't any good. I sure have high hopes for the upcoming remake in the Sega Ages line though, anyway, this is good:
I always found Fantasy Zone 2's levels looked too boring and the music was way worse... I don't think it was because of the hardware either.
Boy your post started off ten levels of wrong and just kept getting more wrong.
Also, those pictures aren't from the Sega Ages remake. They're from the hidden Space Harrier level in the X68000 port of Fantasy Zone.
Did I say my screenshots was of the Sega Ages remake of Fantasy Zone II? I don't work at Sega, I can't find any screenshots of that.
That said, you actually think Fantasy Zone II is superior to the other games?
Yes, you did:

followed by pictures of the X68000 port.
"anyway this is good" referring to the first statement. Maybe I should've put a period there and not a comma, but really, I thought would be pretty obvious considering there was no possible way whatsoever I even could have Fantasy Zone II DX screenshots.
Wind Waker will still look good in ten, twenty years time.
Twilight Princess is already showing it's age.
Much like Ocarina of Time.
It really doesn't. The environment looks like something from Ragnarok Online with it's very simple shapes being covered by repetitive textures. The only depth comes from the cartoon style shader, which works on characters, but flat open areas look like complete ass. The water is pretty sickening to look at.

Am I the only one who likes the visual style of both Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. Looking at some of the TP screenshots people have posted here and in other threads I notice that the textures are rather low resolution, but when I played the game, the only time I actually noticed was when I in first person mode looked at the ground or at a wall right next to me.
Both WW and TP are great looking games. TP looks a little washed out in the shots, but I think it's just a case of saturation adjustment on the screen and not a matter of piss poor color choice.
Anyway, just lock this. I don't think anyone here is of the opinion that many western devs either underestimate the importance of meticulous color selection (whether the intended style is lush or dreary), or that there is a little trend going on where they are applying bloom to everything in addition to sucking the color out of objects that should still be at least a tiny bit colorful despite being present in a golden sun soaked afternoon - or any other time of day for that matter.
I'm under the impression you that you've never been outside. That or live in a town with nothing but rainbows and lollipop trees. Where I live when the sun shines, it is bright. When it is cloudy, it is gray. The dirt is brown and the trees are green. If they style is going for realistic, then they didn't miss the point. You however, did.
Edit: That's what TP looks like. It wasn't modified. Maybe the Japanese are being dumb too! That, or a more realistic style brings more realistic colors.

Maybe TP and WW just don't look as good as people would like to think too.
Because they don't look that good. Either of them. And WW isn't going to look good for another... any time , much less another twenty years because it already looks pretty bad
What prompted to me to make this illy-conceived thread was actually watching high-def Grid videos. I have hated how racing games have all jumped on this gritty brown/orange sun-scorched urban landscape bandwagon for awhile now.
It sort of started around Need for Speed: Most Wanted in 2005. Then Burnout jumped on board somewhat (I think with Revenge). Burnout is too classy to look as bad as NFS:MW, but it still looks like it's trying to hard to look "cool." It's like "almost realism." Pretty real, but just a bit washed out, with too much bloom so everything is glowing and blindingly bright.
You should probably take a look at Project Gotham 3 (Xbox), Formula 1 2008 (PS3), Moto GP 06 (Xbox) and Gran Turismo 5 (PS3). All extremely good looking racers with different styles, none of which can be considered "brown".
Also I can't remember about Revenge, but Burnout Paradise is one hell of a good looking game as well. The NFS games are just crap these days.

Yeah, I don't mind how Burnout Paradise looks. The style fits the theme, I guess.
Also, Most Wanted was actually pretty good. After it, the series started going downhill.

I look out the window, and today, I'm in luck. The sun is shining and all the colors are bright. Not a cloud in the sky. Guess what? Clear skies with bright sun produce warmer colors!
Allow me to recount an experience earlier this year:
I look out the window, and today, I feel like suicide. It is overcast, so the entire sky is luminous in a dreary way and there is a very cold palette. Guess what? Overcast skies make everything grey and dull.
Orange-yellow light enhances color just as white light desaturates.
Christ, it's like the OP has never even been outside. Retarded thread.

Good lord, even the promo shots for the game make me hate everybody who plays it online.

now I've never BEEN to new york city, but I thought at least half the buildings were pink and purple with smiley faces
and they sort of dance in the background
which has a filter over it so it does look washed out on purpose
I couldn't be bothered to read through the 300+ comments that were attacking the OP.
Mmm, better. Thanks.
hahah, I just noticed - someone is named "doosh_bag" in a promo shot.
Can we get a bit more brown in there, Nintendo :x

I'd have locked this if I'd seen it earlier.
Now I have to read six pages to decide if I'm going to lock it or not. Way to go.
I'm making a poll!
I voted to lock this.

Except for the fact that it, ya know, didn't.

EDIT: It should be noted, however, that FZII is better than 2/5 of the series.
Super Fantasy Zone > Fantasy Zone > Fantasy Zone II > Fantasy Zone Gear > Fantasy Zone III
