Japanese games with English Language options?

My mother is visiting Japan soon, and has offered to get me a PS3 while she's there. I know that PS3 games are region-free, but what about PS2 games? There are PS2 games I'd like to play on my PS3, but if I'd have to import them from Japan, I'd need them to have an English language option. Is this common in Japanese releases?

It varies. Some games have full English support, some half English support, and none. There maybe a list at play-asia.com but I'm not sure about ps2 games since that is considered last gen.
