I'm looking for a good sit-down barbeque restaurant in the bay area that I can take my boyfriend to for his birthday. I've already checked Yelp and the best place I've been able to find so far has been Andy's BBQ in San Jose - about 45 miles away from us. Does anyone know of a good place that would be closer (we're on the peninsula)?
For those of you who have eaten there, I'm looking for a place on par with Wood Ranch in the LA area.
(That said, I'm open to suggestions for more places to try. But if you say "Armadillo Willy's" I will cut you.)
I was totally thinking that, but it's the equivalent of going to Denny's to get diner food, which is fine sometimes but not really birthday dinner-level
I'm also curious for a good place... the one in oakland sounds interesting

Heh, I actually went there for my birthday last year. At the time it was the worst BBQ I'd ever had, but I tried another place down here in the South Bay and it was worse.
I'm from the South, so I have very high standard for my BBQ. I also make my own, which would work out better if I knew any place around here that sold the proper cuts of meat. So while we're here, anyone know a good butcher shop?
Go. Go now. There is no other! Man, it's just so good. Seriously. For real. I want some now.
Oooh, it's right next to Tornado as well. I'll have to give this a shot.
Soon.
Please keep us updated on this. I find the Haight oddly convenient and would absolutely add this place to my arsenal. Haven't had good BBQ outside of Texas. Like. Ever.

What, you can't take the word of a complete stranger? :P
Ok, fine, I hesitate to link to this, because the show is generally always full of pretentious gits (though this one is somewhat less so) but "Check Please Bay Area" did a spot on it, to universal acclaim - which you can find here.
But, ladies and gentlemen of Help and Advice, I swear to you, this is the best BBQ you'll find in the Bay Area, bar none. Yes, it's not upscale, but BBQ shouldn't necessarily be. Yes, it's in the Height, which may put some people off, but it's worth it, I promise you.
Get a beer at the aforementioned Tornado pub for maximum enjoyment. And should any of you make it there, let me know what you think!
A friend recommended http://www.unclefranksbbq.com/ to me, I might have to go try that (hm, i'm hungry now... ) (*edit - it's in mountain view, and apparently looks sketchy, but is good?)

I've been there. It's in the back of a bar, and it's what I would call "okay"/mediocre, which may make it acceptable by Bay Area standards.
It's funny, but not really relevant, but all the good BBQ joints in the South Bay from when I was still there burned up, supposedly so the owners could collect on the insurance. Heh. From smoking meat to smoking the whole fricking building.
if you are out in the woodland area there is a pretty good place on main street. the name escapes me at the moment.
i need more restaurant suggestions for the city. i feel like everytime my wife and I head in, we end up at the same places.
asquew grill is off of chestnut right? there is a really good japanese/hawaiin place with awesome poke, again the name escapes me, pacific catch or something maybe
I'm in San Jose, too, and there is this fantastic place about 20 minutes away from here called Famous Dave's. It's in Gilroy, but it is totally worth it. I've celebrated there many times before.
This place is right by my house and it is delicious! It only does BBQ on the weekends though.
This is not the kind of BBQ the OP (or myself) is looking for, I'm pretty sure. Well, unless they're making pulled pork and ribs on the weekends, which I don't see any evidence of in the reviews or on their website.

Famous Dave's is a chain? I swear I've eaten at a Famous Dave's before, and it definitely was not in Gilroy.

If you find a place, post it in the thread, though. I'd love to get some real barbecue one of these days.
the "no true scotch man" fallacy.
This thread title is somewhat oxymoronic. Not that I'm bitter.
Anyway, yes, Everett & Jones is your best bet. It's the only BBQ place I've tried out here so far that isn't terrible.

I like Big Nates on Folsom (btw 12th and 13th). We get stuff from them all the time at work.
I've heard that Lily's on Divisadero is really good but I haven't been there yet.

I used to love this place. It seems to be getting some mixed reviews, and it's possible the quality has declined since I last ate there, 3 years ago.
