So, long story short...

I got Rocket Slime for DS a week ago and I absolutely love it. I bought my DS for games like this. Can anyone recommend some other GBA/DS games in the same vein - action/adventure/Zelda types for those who haven't played RS. I've heard Rocket Slime isn't particularly long and I'd love to have something else lined up to play afterwards.

Thanks all!

Rocket Slime isn't long, but after you "finish" it there's still lots to do, if collecting crap and dueling tanks is your sort of fun. Has some pretty cute multiplayer modes too.

I haven't come across any other DS RPG-style games that are quite the same, in terms of quick fun. Most of them barely pause to ask if you want lube before violating you.

Good to know, I'm anxious to try out the multiplayer. :^:

Well, there's Zelda, obviously. Phantom Hourglass is really the only thing in the same general ballpark as Rocket Slime, though the two games only have the barest of similarities. It's still awesome, though.

World Ends With You isn't quite Zelda-style, but it's the other best RPG on the system.

If Summon Night: Twin Age is anything like the GBA ones, it should be fun(they were both action RPGs).

Thanks for reminding me of this game. Thanks to this thread, I just put a request for it on Goozex (only 250 points with multiple people offering it right now). :D

I bought this for $12 the other daqy and I'm loving it, too. Not sure there's anything really similar for the system, but it's tiding me over nicely until the DS RPG storm hits at the end of the summer or so.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time is kind of similar, in a thematic sense if nothing else.

    Thanks for the recommendations, all.

I definitely plan on getting The World Ends With You but I'm waiting for the price to drop a bit.

Partners in Time is another one I plan on getting, I loved the Paper Mario series and I hear this is fairly similar. I have Superstar Saga on my Goozex list right now so I hope to get that and play through it first.

I'll have to check into Summon Night, the few screenshots I've seen look pretty cool.

I've been holding off on Phantom Hourglass for a price drop and also because I'm nervous about stylus only control. I generally enjoy using the stylus but I like having the option to use the control pad as well. Nevertheless, I definitely intend to give it a shot.

So, I rescued Startist last night. Now there's a painting of the king in the throne room where he's giving off this faint yellow glow and it says "HAPPY JESUS" across the top. :winky: Man, I love this game. Oh, also, Children of Mana is on its way to me, and I have to say, I'm very excited. I know that it's a much different game than SoM, but it looks all kinds of awesome, regardless of any negative reviews. Besides, about half of the games I end up liking the most are those that get a mediocre reception from the press.

To branch off a bit into another subject here - I just started playing La Pucelle for PS2, and love it. I know that Disgaea DS is supposedly coming out this year (awesome!) but are there any other good SRPGs out for the GBA/DS? Thanks!

    Seconded.

Hopefully Atlus will bring over some of the strat titles, if they're even still being made.

I had the same reservations, but they went away after 10 minutes of playing it. The stylus controls are pretty damn awesome. Go play, now.

Rocket Slime is love. <3 Seriously, it's relatively easy and many people say it's short (it was the perfect length for me) but I loved the game fiercely. Beat it on a long GameFly rental and I've half a mind to pick it up again now that it's fairly cheap. It also helps that I'm a huge sucker for the DQ universe, but the whole tank-combat mechanic was a lot of fun and surprisingly complex if you gamed it well.

Not me, once I got to the boat part I lost a lot of my interest. The puzzles and enforced stylus use makes it too involved to sit and play for a few minutes at a time. I keep meaning to finish it, it's not that it's a poor game, it just didn't resonate with what I wanted out of a DS game.

Rocket Slime is so deliberate with being simple and cute it's hard to not like it.. it's like the Super Princess Peach of RPG's. Absolutely perfect for 10 minute breaks.

Then there's the tank battles, which with the ammo system is fantastic fun.

You know, I never really thought about it, but I LOVE the DQ world. It didn't even register to me that it's part of what I'm loving about this game, but it so is. Man, now I need to go play DQVIII again, like NOW.

And DQIX is DS exclusive, how insane is that!? Can't wait.

I just reached the point where I'm able to have crew members assist on the tank, and I absolutely love it. This game is so much fun I never want it to end.

I was really surprised by this, too. There are just so many different ways to play it - you can win just by putting a huge volume of shit into the air (everything including the kitchen sink), or by playing defensively with lots of healing and deflecting ammo, or just waltz into their tank and wreck shit up for a while. It LOOKS simple, and each strategy is pretty straightforward, but there are more ways to win than I would have expected.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga for the GBA has the same kind of goofy humor and setting, but is more of a straight RPG.

Lunar Knights is kind of an action-rpg, but i have never been able to get into it. Kojima had a hand in it, and its a semi sequel to the Boktai GBA games.

You might want to check out Dragon Quest Monsters, then—it's more of a Pokemon-styled RPG, where you collect and breed various DQ critters. You can have a party of more than one in each battle, though, which appeals to me more than Pokemon's 1v1 or 2v2 nature. I've always been meaning to check it out but my backlog is already pretty mighty.

I just looked up DQM over on IGN, I somehow managed to overlook this game. It looks...kind of awesome. Thanks for the heads up! :^:

Rocket Slime isn't short at all, I'd say about 20 hours long if you get all 100 slimes (which I did because it was super fun and it you can't really say you finished the game unless you did. It's like WarioWare and Majora's Mask in that sense. You could "finish" MM with only a couple of masks, but it's only really finsihed when you get all the masks, Fierce Deity included).

If you like this game then Phantom Hourglass and Partners in Time also come highly recommended. PH especially is just fabulous (though the sailing still sucks major ass despite what they tried to improve on it).

Superstar Saga > Partners in Time

Not that PiT is bad, but SS is just great. I actually preferred SS to the Paper Marios.
Thanks for the recommendations, I love Rocket Slime, any good SRPGs for DS?

Final Fantasy Tactics A2 and the Disgaea port are both coming out this year. The Advance Wars games aren't SRPGs, but they might be close to what you're looking for.

Twin Age plays more like Diablo than Swordcraft Story. It's a lot fun, but lacking the importance of crafting weapons which added hours to Swordcraft Story. You get weapon enhancement scrolls, but it's not the same.

The game has it's flaws though. It allows for you to spam Aldo's floor clearing skills for little to no SP and then gives you a SP charge skill. You can counter everything the game throws at you by starting a skill with a long warm-up time (like SP charge). Every party member tends to become mob bait once Reiha learns her AOE heal skill.

In the end it's just good clean fun though.

Be warned that FFTA2 and Disgaea are nothing like Rocket Slime though. Rocket Slime is like Zelda-lite, whereas FFTA and Disgaea are pure strategy RPGs. So liking Rocket Slime is no guarantee that you'll like FFTA and Disgaea as well (personally I love rocket Slime, but hate the FFT series and am ambivalent towards Disgaea). They're completely different genres really.

Oh, sure, I know. I actually asked about halfway down the page for suggestions on Strategy RPGS, and that's why those were brought up. I wasn't trying to make any comparisons.

I beat it! Woo! Absolutely loved the last battle - it was intense. I've got all 100 slimes rescued, but I still need to finish out the tank battles and go defeat Slival again.

So anyways, finishing up the first Phoenix Wright and Professor Layton and then I think I'm going to play Golden Sun (I found it packed away in a box, totally forgot I had it) and Children of Mana. Also, the first GBA Swordcraft Story is on the way, which I am totally excited for.
