PS3 "Must Haves"

edited June 2008 in Help / Advice Forum
I recently purchased the PS3 MGS4 bundle and am curious as to if there are any "must haves" available yet. I plan on picking up GTA4, but beyond that I'm lost.

I pretty much enjoy any type of game (other than Sports... racing is fine though, if you consider that a sport) so I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks.

There's a large ammount of demo's you can grab from the PStore for free, try those and see what you like. Stay away from the Ironman game, for example =p

Personally i've got COD4 and play it regularly, both on PS3 and PC. I have some other titles as well that I woudn't really call "must haves".

If you've not played Assassin's Creed, you should get it.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is a good game as well. Warhawk is a lot of fun too.

I'd advise against buying Assassin's Creed. It got too repetitive halfway through, and it was one of the games I traded in for GTA4. Must rent, but not must buy. Same for Heavenly Sword.

I agree with ApexMirage re: Heavenly Sword and Assassin's Creed.

Flow is fun for the price, but not a whole lot of "game" there. It's an enjoyable way to unwind, and it does get you away from the "shoot at dudes" element that's a part of so many modern games.

I had a great deal of fun with Uncharted and still want to play through it again now that I've unlocked some goodies. The fact that playing through the game nets you some unlockable "cheats" that only add to the gameplay helps quite a bit, and it's pretty fun to just run through and shoot dudes. Very cinematic and an enjoyable story; the only time it gets a little weird is forgiveably short, as well.

Rachet & Clank is fun, and definitely looks like a Pixar movie in parts, but it's not as engaging as other, newer games IMO. I think I'm a bit over halfway and still enjoy the game but if I gotta shoot at dudes there are better games for shooting dudes.

You've already got MGS4 and will pick up GTA4, though, so you're good for a while. If you're enjoying shooting dudes, Uncharted is definitely a good one to pick up next. But as said above, download the demos on the PSN. There's a demo for Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, GRiD, Dark Sector, and many, many more. And most of the demos are pretty good, so you can see what's up with the games. You can see if you dig the cover system & exploration elements of Uncharted (they put a good level in the demo), you can play Heavenly Sword and get a feel for the combat, you can dig into Devil May Cry 4, and so on. It's really the thing I've enjoyed most about this generation of gaming -- easy access to demos.

I plan to pick up Heavenly Sword when it drops to $20 or whatever, since it's so short and not really worth $60 in my book. In fact, there's a good chunk of games out now that I'd pick up when they're cheaper. Uncharted I paid full price for (well, I had some coupons too), and didn't regret it.

You could also try Fling (?), or as I like to call it, Fun With Ragdoll Physics.

edit: Well... now I can't find it. Anybody know what I'm talking about? There's a guy in a catapult and you launch him into a city area to try and gain points by causing the guy damage? Maybe it was Pain?

Yeah, that's Pain. I like it eventhough it's terribly infantile.

    Depending on your chosen flavor:

    -Call of Duty 4
    -Assassin's Creed
-Heavenly Sword is short but fun
-Ninja Gaiden is gorgeous if you haven't played that yet
-Devil May Cry 4 if you like that franchise
    -Orange Box*
-Oblivion* (these two are better on PC)

Also Rock Band. It's pricey as fuck but well worth it IMO.

    Off of PSN:

    -Pixel Junk Monsters is excellent
-flOw is neat but I never play it anymore
-Super Stardust HD is an absolute must have, get the expansion as well
-Everyday Shooter is a weird one, if you desire a lot of shmup variety I'd get it. I like it.
-Echocrome is a braintwister like you wouldn't believe.
-My girlfriend loves Piyotama, Super Puzzle Fighter II HD Remix, and Locoroco Coreccho or however you spell it

Also Battlefield: Bad Company comes out on the 23rd.

Resistance is an average game at best, the only thing special about it was the fact it was a launch title.

Uncharted was a great pulp action game, although It's pretty short so I would definitely say pick it up as a rental.

If you haven't played any Ratchet and Clank games, R&C: Future is a great place to start. I thought it was a little too conservative in terms of gameplay evolution to the PS2 games to warrant a purchase personally, but if you're new to it you will probably find it fun and refreshing.

uncharted is one of my favourite games ever

if you like shooters and platformers and adventure you really can't go wrong. it's beatiful in its graphics and animation, the story rocks, and the core shooting mechanic and strategic set-piece based gameplay (not to mention unlockables, treasures and trophies) means it had fantastic replayability. and it's not that short, first time round i took 11 hours

I love Uncharted, it's one of the best games for the system.
I'm waiting on a price drop for Assassin's Creed.
I haven't gotten around to Ratchet yet.

Heavenly Sword is worth a rent at least.
I think Lair is worth a rent as well, the game is no where near as bad as people make it out.

The only must-haves I’ve found on the PS3 so far are Tekken 5 and my collection of Blu-Ray movies.
