Contesting parking tickets?

Hi all,

Quick situation that came up this past weekend. My girlfriend recently moved to an apartment complex in Brookline, MA. I'd been parking overnight on streets for the past week or so without incident until this weekend.

Friday night I parked a block or so away. There are no signs about parking anywhere on the street, there were other cars parked there, no problem. I come back Saturday morning to find a $30 ticket for parking overnight, despite there being no signs warning against it.

Last night, fine. I park in front of her apartment where the restrictions are clearly spelled out: No parking from 8am-10am, 2 hour parking from 10am-6pm. No problem, as long as I move my car by 8. I'd parked there before. I got to my car at 6:30 this morning to find another $30 ticket, from the same officer as Friday night.

I checked this morning online to find that apparently there is no legal overnight street parking anywhere in Brookline, despite there being no signs indicating this anywhere. This is also different from just about anywhere else in the Boston area I've parked since I've been here. Are these tickets worth contesting, or are they just going to tell me I should have known better?

Do you have a POINTTS type thing in the states? Could try that. You could just go to the officer and say I am new here and did not know about the overnight parking law, could you possible let me off the hook? I now know about the law and will not park on the street from now on.

If that doesn't work, I think I would just bite the bullet. Is $60 worth going into a lot of effort?

    That

In my experience, when dealing with local traffic ordinance enforcers, trying to fight it isn't going to help you. If it's not going to be a colossal hassle to you, maybe try contesting them in hopes they cut you a break on the amount (but don't expect to get off scott-free), but this isn't anything you should lose any sleep over or prepare a major legal defense against. For now on, considered yourself forewarned.

For 60 total dollars you'd end up spending more in court fees. Don't fight it, parking is point free. Just pay it and learn from that mistake

There isn't that much more to discuss. It happens.
