I'm having a lot of fun in the demo, but one thing I noticed- and I don't know if this is because of the fighters or the difficulty level- is that I can't go to the ground in a natural fashion. I mean, if I really aim for it I can go to the ground but I can much more easily and much more quickly beat either guy by just kicking him in the head repeatedly. I never have to go down to the ground to beat the guy.

Because both characters in the demo are strong strikers. I'll bet you six dollars that if you play as Sean Sherk you won't ever knock anyone out ever. You'll never sub them either but that's not the point, you wet blanket.
EDIT: Also, Chuck is very hard to take down. I mean, it's sort of what he's known for. He used to be known for knocking bitches out, but he doesn't do that anymore.

Really? I was playing this with a friend, and when he was using Chuck he was kicking my ass standing up, so I was pretty much forced to take it to the ground.
I made it about 3/4ths of the way through training...
this is harder than I imagined...
I woudln't say hard, I'd say deep. I noticed in the hour or so I played with a friend, Matches got longer and longer as we both got better at it. It was a lot of fun.
Do you guys think this'll get called a fighting game or a sports game? The obvious answer is fighting, because the game revolves around fighting, but it's got elements of a sports game as well because it's based on a sport.
I think it'd be great if it could get called a sports game, just to give MMA some respect and acknowledge that it isn't the "human cock-fighting" that a certain cranky senator branded it a little while ago. I realize they're sensationalizing the violence to sell the game (I mean they put two striking-focused fighters in the demo) but there's so much more to it that I think this game could be a good way to educate people in what MMA's all about.

Shogun's best weapon against Chuck is the Muay Thai clinch. Whip his head a few times and hit him in the face with knees. I consistently do the best. It can be tough to work inside enough to get a clinch but once Shogun has it he can wreck havoc.

Lunging leg kick --> Thai Plum almost never fails for me.

Yeah, I would call it a sports game, personally.
Yeah, wrestling games and stuff like Def Jam fall under the category of sports games too.

It should be included in both. I wouldn't hesitate to bring it up in a fighting game discussion, especially to someone who's a bit tired of fireballs and fatalities and guys who jump 20 feet up in the air. Games like UFC and Fight Night are at the other end of the fighting game spectrum, just like Halo and ArmA are at different ends of the FPS spectrum.
And any game which is focused on a sport is pretty much by definition a sports game. Even games where you just coach or manage a sports team are considered sports games as much as they are management sims.

I wouldn't call Fight Night or UFC fighting games.
How is a game that is entirely about two people at a time fighting hand to hand in a ring in a professional fighting organization not a fighting game? :P
When I think of the UFC game, I first think of a fighting game just because that is what the game is all about. But I wouldn't think twice about calling it a sports game. It is a sports game considering it is based off of a sport. I think of it as having two genres, like how that NFL Coach game can be something like Sports/RPG. UFC is Sports/Fighting.

See, this is the only thing that makes me call it a fighting game. I feel like I have to. But really, when I think "Fighting game," UFC/FN is most certainly not the first thing that comes to mind. If you asked me to name 30 fighting games off the top of my head, I probably wouldn't name either of them.
I think where it breaks for me is that UFC/FN are really simulations of a real activity rendered with startling accuracy. The games I think of when I think fighting games, something like Tekken or Soul Caliber, are exaggerated caricatures of real activities. People do those moves and activities for real but you wouldn't ever see someone doing the things they do in those games 1:1 like you could in the UFC or Fight Night games.
Ok I have a question. When you get stunned, and the screen goes black and white, and your down, and the other guy is punching you in the face, is there ANYTHING you can do? Cuz just holding block doesn't work. And nothing else seems to work either.

Get up ASAP. Up on the right stick. Like, before he stands over you and starts pounding away, because at that point it's almost always lights out.

So just pound on the "get-the-fuck-up" action. Got it. I've only won about.. 3 fights now on the 2nd hardest difficulty.. Blah.. It's tough

Yeah, it gets pretty hard at times. I won't play on the hardest difficulty. It's not even fun. It's not borderline fun.

I can't even imagine what this game is like on Expert or whatever it's called. The 2nd hardest is hard enough to not be frustrating when you lose. It's like "fuck I lost again, but I'M SO CLOSE!".
Like right now. I finally started getting some good transitions with Shogun, and holding Chuck on the ground for more than 5 seconds. Almost got a rear naked choke. Then I see his face at the end of the round, and his one eye is more or less swollen shut.
It's things like this that will make this game a must buy for me.

Bushido Blade doesn't use exaggertated caricatures of real moves. There's no Soul Calibur-esque "hitting a guy in the head with a full-on sword blow does nothing but jabbing him in the knee with the hilt 30 seconds later knocks him out" mechanics. It's still a fighting game, no?
Karate Champ is another example - no fireballs, no fighters jumping twice their height, etc. It aimed to be a simulation of a real activity.
Okay, it's both. But if I were organizing my imaginary game store, i'd put it in the imaginary Sports Games section.
Also, does the mouthpiece really need to fly out on every knockout? That was great the first two times, as I'm a huge fan of Mouthpiece Physics™, but after that, it sort of loses something.

Personally, I think it's a decent on-screen indicator to let you know that you got the knock-out. I understand that's supposed to be the moneyshot, but at the same time, you don't always know right away. The ref should have to come in and get in your way like on a TKO.
In other news, I still have no managed a submission with Shogun. I've tried with the stick and the face buttons. Mostly playing on the second highest difficulty.
You can usually tell from the commentary when you've knocked the other guy out in the standup. Still, I guess the Flying Mouthpiece could become their KO signature the way Fight Night has their river of saliva whenever there's a knockdown.

First time I saw the FN4 videos, I thought those were mouthpieces. Couldn't figure out why new ones kept popping out. "That guys cheeks must be like a magicians hat."

Really, I'd prefer there was no indicator. I want to punch him in the face on the way down, and punch him when he hits the ground, until the ref stops me.
I can score 800 billion knockouts with Shogun in the 1st or 2nd round. I can sub Liddell. I can escape if Liddell somehow manages to get me to the ground. So I decide to try playing as Liddell just to see what's up.
Motherfucker can't knock shit out, gets taken down every 3 seconds, and no matter how many different transitions I use, Shogun gets full mount like Liddell's a 2 dollar hooker.

It jives with the rosters that have been released other places. The only name I miss is Shane Carwin in the HW division and that's just because I really like the guy. He looks like he could be really good.

Fuck Liddell.
Really? I prefer to fight as Shogun in part because Liddell seems stronger. He requires a completely different style but I've gotten KTFO in under 10 seconds by his spinning back fist
Oh man, I'm gonna spend SO much time knocking out Matt Sera. That guy irks the shit out of me.
As for Lidell, you gotta pick your shots and come in strong. If you catch anyone with any punch while they are in an animation that isn't blocking or just moving, ur knocking them out. I don't stun people as Lidell, I knock them the fuck out!
Houston Alexander? Mark Bocek? They're going really deep with this, although I'm glad to see guys like Joe Lauzon, Marcus Davis, and I guess some guys who now seem better choices weren't available then (Jon Jones at LHW, Junie Browning as a punching bag)
-Liddel's slams take away scads of energy. Double underhook, lb+any direction on the right analog stick. lb + < looks coolest, as it's a big scoop slam.
-Liddel has an excellent, excellent combo: jab, cross, left hook, cross.
-Preventing a transition (by holding back on the right analog stick) saps a great deal of your opponent's stamina
-When you're in someone's down, closed guard as Liddell, lb + major transition slams him so he releases you and leaves you in a standing open guard.
-You can rock an opponent with a slam. It's awesome.
