[HADOKEN ON!] Super Street Fighter II HD Remix Beta: Can this be a longer title?
Inside this beta will come the curious, the fancy-free. Outside of it will come motherfuckers.
Yes, ladies and folk, the Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is now in beta. This is also known as The Reason I Bought WOTB:Commando 3. In the beta, players can play as Ken or Ryu in either local or (preferably) Xbox Live multiplayer in classic or remixed mode. We've got eight weeks to run up the leaderboard and Hurricane Kick all contenders to the curb, lads, so let's get started.
Pictures because this game is gorgeous:
And remember, report any bugs or criticisms to beta.capcom.com. Now then, let's get to some Street Fighting.

But it's still just... another version of SFII, right?
Strictly speaking, yes, though in Remixed mode characters have been given new moves (Ryu now sports a fake fireball and I believe he has the donkey kick he had in SF3). In Classic Mode, only the sprites are different. You may also choose to play as either the Super Street Fighter II or Super Street Fighter II Turbo versions of characters in classic mode, which took me off guard.
The reason this game is significant is because all of the sprites, music, and sound effects have been redone with HD in mind. So yes, it's an iteration of Street Fighter II but dammit, SF4's not coming out until Q4 and I'll happily take a kickass version of SF2 until then.
Masume: No to my knowledge, but WOTB 3 is actually a fairly solid game for 800 points. Mindless fun, if nothing else.
Dalsihm (sp?) was a fucking pimp. There is something about punching someone in the face from across the map and then using the power of awesome to set them aflame... makes me wish I could do this in RL.
Have a look through this for the rationale for some of the changes made to Super SFII by the game designer. Well worth a look if you're into that sort of thing.
Lag, from the two matches I palyed, is nonexistant. I'm not sure on the physical distance I was from the other player, so that may be a factor. It's certainly leagues better than Hyper SF2's lag, but I'm not sure I'd put it on the "My internet connection is jizzing itself" level of VF5.
Also, Sneak, you may have kicked my ass at VF but I will take you to school in Street Fighter. Man up and bring it on.
EDIT: People are still able to sign up if you buy WOTB3.
I might have still been interested in this if they hadn't pussied out and decided to downgrade the sprites and remove all the detail they had (kinda makes the whole thing pointless if they're little more than eagle filtered CvS2 sprites)
Well that and the fact the animation looks hideous because they used the same number of frames as SF2 for the uber-hardcore players.
This could have been a really fucking awesome project, but they made some stupid decisions that undermined the whole thing.

I've just done two dozen games and I'm going to tell you, you're fucking wrong.
The game is beautiful in an old-school way. Not once have I heard complaints about the art style. Look, I've played every iteration of Guilty Gear except Accent Core, First of the North Star, SF3, and any other gorgeous fighter you'd care to mention. While the frame limit holds the game down in some respects, it's still a fantastic looking game.
But looks are really besides the point. In fighting games, more than in almost any other genre, gameplay is what matters. This game is better than Super Street Fighter II Turbo. I don't know if I'd let it attain the heights of VF5 and SF3, but it's one of the best fighting games I've ever played. Period.

Wait, only those two? What about SF2, SF2CE?
No idea why they made the choice. Maybe Hyper SF2 Anniversary edition is hitting XBLA at some point?
Also, neat note on soundtrack. You can play with the classic or soundtrack or a remix done by the guys who did Blood on the Asphalt over at OC Remix.
- the old animations aren't as terrible with the awesome looking sprites as I feared
- there's some kind of gay effect on the fireballs once they hit that I DO NOT WANT
- holy crap there was like, no lag in that match
- I suck at Street Fighter II as much as I ever did
You have always been able to use the Super Street Fighter II versions of characters in Super Street Fighter II Turbo (follow me, here). They were just referred to as the "old" versions. They didn't have supers and some moves were different, but they were always there. Nothing has changed in that regard with HD Remix.

I can't pull off shoryuken motions to save my life. I was rocking quite a few people, however, because I've been playing Street Fighter for over fifteen years.

Also: Ken is broken.
Sorry for the double post, had to address this.
Devs know and are working on it, look for an update early next week to fix it. A bunch of the hardcore players are complaining.
You would think that someone as "highly praised" as David Sirlin would've caught that design and game balance flaw.
But to be fair, this beta is using a 3 month old build and also doesn't have the true widescreen format implemented yet. The character balance in this beta is way different from the current build.
THIS is why developers don't usually say SHIT about a game until it's about to be released, so the hype doesn't happen all at once and then the wait sets in and people get impatient and forget.
This game has had less development time than other games, but has been known about from basically the start, so it seems like the game takes forever to make. But all games do. It's just how long we've been aware of them.

I would agree, but I don't think we've even seen any other characters in action besides ryu and ken.

Yeah I tried the beta out, its rather badass, I wish there were more characters but sadly not,
also, sorry for not accepting any requests Thorne, I probably shouldve told ya I wasnt going to play at the time, but I think its mainly because I suck so bad at Street Fighter that its not even funny...
well Ok yeah its pretty fuckin hilarious but still, I suck, but Ill definitely have to play you sometime soon, Ill stop wimping out and get my ass kicked for a while! (Like I have been),
( also, it really hasnt been laggy for me except tournaments, holy fuck shit was that laggy, I was kicking this dudes ass for once and I was really excited, thought I was going to win, when all of his health came back, mine went down, and I lost, I cried for 5 hours straight and cut off three of my fingers, true story, Im now a badass 7 fingered man.)

No man, the entire game's worth of Sprites has been redrawn from the ground up. There is also AA. :P
Any other way of getting in on this beta?

Yeah, Super SF II mind you, but yes. I'm confused, is this a bad thing, or were you looking for SF 4?

No two people would not be on fire.
No, I was just making sure. I hadn't really heard much about it.
Is it still possible to get in on this? (And how is the lag, btw?)

Because 800 MSP for two characters... I tried the demo for that game, and I don't like it.

If the lag is as good as you say, this will be awesome.

Pretty hilarious. He finally got it at the end.

As far as I know, this is the only footage of other characters...

The beta is XBLA only, but the full game is XBLA, PSN, and I'm pretty sure PC as well. Just like everything else Capcom does.
