I was told today by two distinct EBStops that it will be in on Friday. When I explained that Atlus apparently stated that it should be on shelves today, both EBStops told me that the street date was Friday anyway and that "Even if they got it in today, they wouldn't sell it until Friday."
Me: "Even if Atlus, the PUBLISHER, says the game is supposed to come out today?"

One of those (highly top secret) reasons did in this case, and that sent the game back to Oct. 17th. Like the July date, "Oct 10th" was never a date Contact was set for, I suspect retailers just got it confused with Devil Summoner. So, Contact has been done for quite a while, but sometimes the game industry forces things to be delayed. I can assure you Contact will be in your grubby little hands on Oct 18th (as the 17th is a ship date).
I would very much like to see a followup with them discussing why anyone would think the street date is the 20th, with them running around saying things like the above.

They can ship the game, that doesn't mean stores will put it on shelves, and it seems that this would be the case.
Really I dont see why people are getting flustered/upset, it's not really a big deal.

Well if I worked for a game company (which I do), and the game was shipped on a Tuesday with an intended sale date of the next day, I would be extremely unhappy to discover that stores didn't make it for sale until later (which some did, with Disgaea 2). If nothing else, Atlus themselves has every right to be upset if this is the case.

Precisely. That was my intended implication - not that we have any legitimate recourse for being screwed over by the retails chains putting out conflicting dates and changing them whenever they feel like it, but that if I were Atlus and I had told my eager customers that the game would be on sale a particular date, I'd be ticked when I was made a liar by somebody else.
My EB didnt get any copies. And since I'm an employee, I was able to ask if we had them, but couldn't sell them. We didn't have them period. Someone fucked up, and it probably wasnt Atlus.
EBStops are terrible at getting games on the right day anyways, I'm more concerned about whether Targets and Best Buys and what have you are getting this game today. If they have it, I will buy it.

I might swing by later and check for myself.
Best Buy didn't even have it listed when I asked them in person. I watched the guy look for it.
Also, the guy didn't know how to spell "contact." First he typed "connect." Then he started typing "c o n t e c t." I corrected him. He spelled it with an "e" again. I corrected him three times before he got it right.

Well that's encouraging.
Life is kind of disappointing lately. Particularly with most of the people I've been in contact with.

Since the title of the thread has not changed, I'm assuming this is still questionable by some. I just got a line for Atlus..Contact just shipped, and will be in stores on the 19th.

In stores on the 19th? I guess I'll have to check tommorow after classes then (I'd kind of rather it come out Friday I'v got Chinese homework up my ass that I have to do tommorow).

According to my EB, they won't sell it to me until the 20th anyway. Fucking dickweeds.

Sounds like this one might actually show up at stores like Target or Best Buy? Maybe we can avoid EB altogether?
I was really looking forward to getting this today.
Tomorrow? I remain hopeful.
Apparently, it'll be available all week -- just the one copy, though, and they keep shipping it between stores, and as soon as they get it in they have to ship it out to the next one on the list.
I paid off my preorder completely, and the Gamestop guy promised me he'd hold the game for me until I came to get it (since I'm in the hospital for a few days).
If it's not there when I go to get it, I am going to be a very angry panda.
Complete strike-out here. The Target guy stared blankly at me, having no idea what Contact is, and said "Well, we don't seem to have it in, but it'll definitely be here when it comes out." ...yeah. Thanks. Walmart, I didn't even ask anybody. Best Buy has never heard of it and doesn't even have it in their computer system.
And at EB, where I have my pre-order, she said - after saying I was the 2nd person to ask about it - "it shipped today, should be here by Friday."
I understand that this stuff happens, but it seems to me like it's been happening an awful damn lot with DS titles. Nobody messes up the release day of Bully (or to take less ridiculously overpublicized games, Quake IV, or Company of Heroes, or Guitar Hero II) - when they're supposed to be on shelves, they're on shelves - but when it's Starfox, Clubhouse Games or Contact (any game but NSMB, really) "ship date" and "release date" are apparently arbitrary terms subject to all sorts of interpretation. It's just getting kind of old. I pre-order for a release date so that I can walk in on that day, get my copy, and walk out. Not so I can wonder for 3 days after that whether I should swing by the store that day. :x
EDIT: And yes, I know GH II isn't out yet. But I can pretty much guarantee you it'll be on the shelves the day everybody's pre-order slip tells them to come and get it.
I talked to my Best Buy. They said they would have it in around 5:30-6pm. Somehow, I doubt that, but I'll be checking anyways.
yeah...thats a strange time for BB to be getting a game in. my guess would be that the dude you talked to just gave you a time shortly after his shift ends.
No luck at Best Buy or Target. Tommorow then, maybe?
In unrelated news, last night my friends and I rented Jodie Foster's Contact. What a great movie that is. But the next morning, the DVD was all static. Approximately 18 hours of static. Ha!
So at this point I'd say the consensus is it's pretty damned good, at least for a system currently really lacking in RPGs. It appears to have all the personality and originality we expect it to - only serious complaints about it I've read are the somewhat hands-off combat system and the short length.

7.0/7.5/8.0 from EGM. Complaints were it was too short (15 hours or so), some missions were a little vague, and one reviewer thought the combat wasn't interactive enough. All were generally positive though.
