I've averaged a good many hours in thus far. I just sort of freelance and do the vigilante thing because I can't be bothered to escort or carry anything.
The war parties and armies in Expanded Gameplay are crazy though. Ninety men against my thirty hardly seems fair, but fighting the Order of Light and being taken out in a blaze of glory rocks out hard.
Small armies of really strong guys can easily take out a larger force. In the LOTR mod my army of 45 Knighs of Dol Amroth and I could take on a Host of Mordor (~150-200) without losing a single knight. That's when I decided to stop playing... for a time.
I messed up and have mainly Vaegir Skirmishers and Bear Hunters. The big guys in the Order of Light can absolutely decimate me. The conscripts aren't a big problem though.

It's in the works. Don't see why they'd want to do it though, just seems like a waste of the engine.
I'd personally like to see the Waterloo mod be finished. It just screams for it in my opinion. Ranks of soldiers shooting volleys then charging forward while dragoons slash with sabers and shoot with pistols.

Uh... not much horseback riding and lancing going on in WW2. Certainly there are more suitable engines for that.
I'm pretty sure there was one big battle in Poland with the Polish using horses (hadn't updated their calvary yet) and the Germans using their tanks.
[spoiler:99b7e580c0]Germany won.[/spoiler:99b7e580c0]
No it doesn't. Just because something has melee and archery combat doesn't necessarily mean it would be SO MUCH MORE AWESOMER if it were shoehorned into being controlled by the Wiimote.

I didn't say it would be so much more awesome. It would be the same amount of awesome, but its current combat suits the remote really well. You can't honestly deny that, can you?
So I started playing the Star Wars mod for this and it's pretty good. It's a lot of fun riding and war Kuduu into a group of Stormtrooper, cutting down a few of them, then turning around, whipping out your gun and shooting someone in the face.
Woah, this sounds awesome. Is it in the megathread of mods? Didn't see it first pass... (but wasn't looking too hard).
Last time I checked the link in the giant list of mods was broken, so here you go.
So...the LotR mod (Last Days). Awesome mod, I'm loving it.
Question /Dwight: How does one "win" at this game?
I've defeated a Great Host of Isenguard (I'm with Rohan), and I've done random missions for different Rohan leaders. I'm a lieutenant, and I've got a ton of Elite Riders of Rohan and about 4 other named NPC's in my party.

But how do I "win"?
You win by eliminating the other enemy factions. I've never done it, but apparently it's possible. You eliminate factions by destroying all of their armies. You ever notice how it will say "so-and-so is in a weakened state"? Well, beat on those suckers (as long as they're against you) and eventually you'll get rid of them. Then move onto someone else. Eventually after you've got everyone down except for Mordor you can start pounding on them and once you get them in a weakened state (I think) you win. Good luck!

I managed to get rid of the Dunlanders and the Haradrim and had Isengard and Mordor in a weakened state. But I never finished the game, heh.

Just a note but if you're playing as evil in the LOTR mod you might want to hold off on killing Gondor/Rohan until you've built up a sizable force. As soon as you do Isengard betrays Mordor and a second war starts up. Though the game mentions that the betrayal happens in the manual (Or somewhere.) I hadn't even thought to check for it and got zerged by four great hosts of Mordor a few minutes after that and lost everything. This is especially bad if you choose to use the "Old Man" at the brigand fort to give Mordor the Great Hosts option.

Last time I ran with a character, I was all about my pack, now I mainly ride solo and have my crew hold back while i soften up our opponents. As i rise in Levels, trainer ensures my guys either rise during battle or shortly afterwards. How do you configure NPCs in your party?

If you go to the fort on the first day you can set up a customized set of rules that allow you to, among other things, determine each faction/alliances strength, the chance of recovery if a nation is weakened, whether or not heroes can die, and if Mordor can spawn one to four "Mega Hosts" (Listed as Great Hosts) to invade Gondor with. The Great Hosts each spawn once from a major point in Mordors territory, IE Dol Guldur for example.

You can't unless they're heroes. If they're heroes then you need to "barter" with them and give them whatever items you want them to have.

Oh... cool. I don't remember that at all. Perhaps someday I'll go through and play that mod again (although for now I'm stuck with galloping speeders in the Star Wars mod).
So I took out my first named great host of Mordor. It wasn't too bad, had to do some hit and fade tactics a few times.
I would attack a couple of times, and then when my forces were weakened, I would withdrawal and heal up some. Then come back in and attack.
The only hard part were those big orc looking guys who had axes. Those guys can take a beating before going down. I head shotted one and did ZERO damage. They're a lot more vunerable from behind, so I let my Rohan Youths (read: Cannon Fodder) take the hits while I kill him from behind.
One annoying thing is that when I command another army to stay or follow me, they won't when there is a great host around. They still run away. I want to use them to help weaken up some of my enemies.
Are there any mods to improve combat? I'm sick of hit and run tactics on horses, and getting gang-raped on foot. Shields break in mere seconds, and don't even get me started about blocking with a weapon.

An armoured charger is what, 5000g? The most I've made is about 700.

There are plenty of mods that change combat rules, but you shouldn't be confined to 'hit and run tactics on horses' with the original ones. Aside from the fact that horse combat in real life is baed on hit-and-run tactics, you can still stop and attack from a horse if you know what you're doing and you have sufficient stats and equipment. If you don't have a good shield or a lot of points in the shield skill, consider carrying more than one. Hire some men; improve your athletics, throwing, shield, and powerstrike; get decent equipment; and make good use of intelligent tactics.
There are plenty of threads on tactics for all play styles on the M&B forums, but here are some basic ones:
Keep your men under control. Have archers hold on a hill while your horses charge, or wait for the enemy to draw near if your melee units are on foot.
Ride circles around your enemy with your shield up in order to corral the enemy and distract their archers while your slower units make their way over.
Flanking and attacking from behind can work, but they are very difficult to pull off. I usually have my men attack head-on and do the flanking myself.
Keep your enemy dispersed, and take out archers as soon as possible.
Lure units into disadvantageous areas. Bring mounted units to water, the top of a hill, or an area with lots of trees and rocks, and they will be utterly powerless. Hide behind the crest of a hill in order to force archers to march up it and engage in melee. If you have lots of mounted units, lead them to one end of a large open space, lure your enemy to the other end, and order your men to charge. Keep pulling your lancers back and making them charge again.
In-battle terrain is affected by that of the overworld. Engage in battle in areas that are beneficial to your units and detrimental to the ones you plan to fight.
I use pretty much strictly mounted units, as they seem to survive longer.
My main tactic is to tell them to hold off while I thin out the enemy ranks some with a lance or a broadsword.
Once I've whittled them down a bit, I tell my men to charge in.
Usually the enemy is so focused on me that they don't even see all of my mounted guys charging in.
Once my men have engaged the enemy, I dismount, pull out my big two-hander (my dick lolz) and start to kill the enemy from behind while they're trying to gang up on my men.
Last days mod is getting a tad silly, as I've gotten to the point where I can take out great hosts and only lose a couple of my men.
So last night I lost my entire army to mountain bandits ><
I had just come off several huge battles, including taking out a Vaegir War Party when I was out numbered 2 to 1. As a result, most of my men were wounded. From there, I'm heading into town to rest, but a party of 20ish bandits cut me off and I'm forced to fight with a couple of sharpshooters and maybe 1 man at arms.
After faking my death, I found that the bandit party now had 5 Knights, 6 Man at Arms, 4 Sharpshooters, 6 Crossbowmen, and a few other scattered units as prisoneers.
I guess the good news is that I don't have to pay ~600 a week in upkeep.
I'm still terrible at mounted combat. I usually just order my army to follow me to the nearest high ground and then hold position. I dismount and unload on the charging units with my sniper crossbow while the knights engage anyone who gets close. I need to get another point into riding, but after that I'll probably grab a charger and go back to the lance.
Oh man, I've been trying out the 1066 mod today. It does so many things right! I love taking over cities with my viking army. First I use archers to snipe the wall-defense units and then charge into the gates with my axemen to finish off the rest of the defence. For great Norse justice!
You guys got another convert - I just bought the game, after I figured out how to make the game fun - *uninstall story mod.*
Story mod will be good after I figure out how to get really good at combat, but even at the absolute lowest difficulty settings I just get chased down and gangbanged by 40 bandits on like day 10, *every time,* and it's downhill from there.
Lowering all the graphics settings to nothing and upping my framerate made me *much* better at combat, though. I can finally take out more than one enemy at a time!
Try the lotr mod (last days) i was really bad at this game but then tried the mod, and practiced alot in the bigger arena and then used the easily gained armies to win sometimes, it will help you get better at the game
I've got a question - I talked to the arena fighters, who told me that to fight with a lance, you should keep it "couched" as you ride past. What exactly does that mean? I can get like 15 damage if I let go of the mouse button as I ride past to thrust the lance at them, but that's about the best I can do. Hardly seems worth doing...
I sort of thought keeping it couched meant holding down on the mouse button as you ride past, but the lance just seems to go through them, it never hits.

Couching is when the lancer locks the lance into their armour. In Mount & Blade it happens automatically at a certain speed if you don't keep hold of the mouse. You will do a LOT of damage if you simply know where to aim your horse without aiming with the mouse. You have to try and hit the person with the end of the lance as you go past them.
Once you've gotten the hang of that, try to learn to time the use of the mouse so that you can aim the horse, and thrust the lance at them in around the same place as where you would have hit them with a couched lance.
You can get SILLY damage that way, and it's how I got most of my kills.
Yes, what they said. Just don't push left mouse button.
I couldn't figure that out for the longest time.
I liked it at first, but now that I've gotten a named sword (LOTR mod) I just circle the fringes of the mob and hack em up one by one. I also find a lance only works in the initial charge against a group of mounted foes. I can't get far enough away from them to turn around and charge again, but I can continually circle them with a sword out and cut them and their pretty little ponies up to hell.
I'm being chased down by both a Great Host of Rivendell and a Lesser Host of Gondor in my current game, and it's not looking to great as they are both faster and stronger than anything I can amass. I'll probably have to rely on luck from her on in. This group of soldiers I command currently are very experienced, and at least 2 - 3 hours of work. ;_;
