Retro Sega on (Megadrive + Dreamcast)!

Ok folks, I need some help. I got up bright and early today and, for my efforts, managed to snag the following from a carboot sale:

For £2 - Megadrive with 2 official controllers + Micro Machines 2 + Some crappy pool game
For £4 - Dreamcast with 0 games, 1 official controller, 1 HUGE unofficial controller, standard Composite cables

So I almost totally missed out on the Dreamcast due to being obsessed with PC Gaming at that point and I need recommendations (Anywhere to buy them in the UK would be appreciated too), and whilst I didn't miss out on the megadrive and have a good idea of games I want (Sonics, Streets of Rage, Echo) I wouldn't mind knowing about some gems I might have missed.

Being I'm hooking these up to a 42" screen I also want them to look the best they can. I have an RF cable for the megadrive, is that all it's capable of doing? Same with the dreamcast, I know you can pick up a vga cable but I hear they're all kinds of expensive, what's my best option?

Cheers guys!

Mega drive have Scart cables. Which look awesome if you buy the right ones. Mega Drive 1 Scarts aren't cheap though because they use the same connection as the Neo Geo AES. So sellers charge loads for them.

The Dreamcast i would recommend VGA box for it if the TV has one. Be warned though some games don't run through VGA

*edit* also I have a selection of pretty good* Mega Drive games spare im willing to offer to you if you want PM me.

    *meaning awesome

Spotted an RGB cable on ebay for £10, this look the real deal to you? I don't think I can afford one right now but I may splurge

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180262831086

I'll have to consider the VGA box, again, as above, I'm saving cash at the mo (who would have thought after getting engaged and saving for a ring I have to start saving ALL over again for a wedding?)

Ebay is your best bet for games really especially now that Gamestation are apparently getting rid of their retro stock.

You have to look and see with them i've seen RGB's that look like crap but have a picture so sharp you would think it was a Pc resolution, and good quality looking ones that were just crap. £10 is a good price.

Just cleaned up my "new" consoles, which looked like someone had eaten their dinner off of them.

I also had to take apart one of the Megadrive control pads as it didn't work very well but a quick clean around inside later (with Ann Summer's Buzz Fresh!) and it seems to be functioning well enough till I can get another. Not super responsive but good enough for Micromachines.

Quite how someone got the Dreamcast in the state it was in is beyond me, but it works and isn't making any strange noises.

Cheers for the suggestions up to now folks, any DC games ideas?

+1 for Megadrive not Genesis. Trying to search through my memory for awesome games. Cannon fodder is pretty awesome, as are the Earthworm Jim games. I haven't played Gunstar Heroes but it's meant to be awesome. It is made by Treasure. The Ghostbusters game on Megadrive was surprisingly good.
The "__ Strike" series was pretty cool. Urban Strike, Jungle Strike, and I think there was another. It was an isometric game where you flew around shooting things in a helicopter.
Also Micro Machines is amazing and anyone who disagrees is just plain wrong. The same can be said for NBA Jam, Outrun, Road Rash 2, Rock 'N' Roll Racing, Syndicate, Phantasy Star... Man this brings back some memories.

Jet Set Radio, Power Stone 2, Sonic Adventure 1&2, Shenmue, Virtua Fighter 3.

That's just a quick glance over some of the games I've got. Dreamcast has one of my favourite back catalogues. So many hidden gems with the Dreamcast, thinking about pulling mine out and playing Shenmue thanks to this thread!

Also, if you have any GameStations near you, they're great for getting retro-games, Dreamcast and Mega Drive included (though the one near me doesn't have cases for MD games, just the cartridges). Make sure to take a look in Blockbusters as well, when Game Station was bought out by GAME, any of the Game Stations that were attached to Blockbusters stores just converted them into large Gaming sections, with their stock remaining pretty much the same.

Nearly all the Blockbusters got rid of their retro stock a while back. Try inde shops and even look at a few CEX stores have been selling some dreamcast games of late. Just always expect the mark up on anything considered desirable.

Do look out for Bangai-o on the DC. The PAL is the lowest priced of all the regions and is still fairly easy to pick up for under £10. For an excellent Treasure shooter is a bargin.

I guess the one near me must be the exception then. Quite surprising to be honest, I know a lot of people who trade in and buy Retro Games from there all the time. That's a damn shame, I thought they'd pulled a rather smart business move by allowing Retro games to be bought and sold.

A while back, me and some friends bought Chrono Trigger from our local Blockbusters for £69. Not many places you can just walk into and find that nowadays.

I know that blockbuster had plans to keep retro in at first especially after Gamestation was dropping it to just a handful of stores. Maybe BB are just leaving them in the profitble stores. But I remember the company e-mails asking about ways to phase retro out of the stores back when I was working there. Btw the Chrono trigger was american version boxed? Just remember a lot of Gamestations getting scammed out by people trading the insanely cheap Jap versions for really high values.

I can't recommend Jet Set Radio, Power Stone 2, and Shenmue enough. You can tell I'm a whore for JSRF by my avatar, but the original is even better, in my opinion. And I still prefer Power Stone 2 over Smash Bros.

I also recommend Cannon Spike and Chu Chu Rocket. Both are good, cheap, arcade-style fun, and both are fun in multi (CCR being especially fun in multi).

Not sure how VF3 holds up since you can get VF4 on PS2 and VF5 on PS360.

Then there's Virtual On 2, but that can be really expensive to play it the way it was meant to be played.

    I love my Dreamcast(s).

Speaking of retro Sega, I just found this local gamestore here yesterday, and so I checked it out and they had lots of older stuff, including Saturn, to my surprise

And they had a copy of Dragon Force.

    Which I bought.

    For $35

Anyway, I love Bangai-O and Tech Romancer on the Dreamcast. Also I played this game Elemental Gimmick Gear(E.G.G.), and it was pretty fun, very Zelda-ish.

Hmm, couldn't tell you right now, my mate has it at the moment. I'd like to know though, because we were planning on selling it off in the future (none of us are really Chrono Trigger fans, or own a SNES to even play it).

I always suggest the NHL series as the Megadrive sure was its prime. 95 if you're not gay, 94 if you want to get man-hugs from nerds. Rings of Power is the most unappreciated rpg ever. It's like huge. No, seriously.

IIRC, Grandia II is one of those instances where a DC game got ported to a "superior" system but the DC version is still the best. I also heard the DC version of Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 is better than the PS2 and XBox versions. Whereas I heard Skies Of Arcadia is better on the Gamecube.

Back to 2D fighters, IIRC the Dreamcast is the home of the only perfect port of Marvel Vs. Capcom 1 (I know some people prefer 1 over 2). Mark Of The Wolves and Last Blade 2 are awesome, and probably much cheaper than getting the Neo Geo carts (though they may have been re-released on one of those PS2/XBox compilations, I can't keep track of them all).

Dude, pony up and get it for Dreamcast if you can, and play it on the biggest TV you have. This game can get pretty crazy, and sometimes its hard to tell what's going on. Having a smaller screen only exacerbates the situation.

    Yes!

    For the mega drive...

    Streets of Rage
    Sonic series
    Revenge of Shinobi
    Altered Beast
Mickey Mouse & The Castle of Illusion
    Forgotten Worlds
    Ecco the Dolphin
    Cool Spot
    Alex Kidd series

I know you listed a couple.

Forgotten Worlds is a bit of a 'hidden gem', it's a side-scrolling shoot 'em up, you can play co-op, upgrade weapons etc in shops that appear throughout the game.

    Forgotten_Worlds_GEN_ScreenShot2.jpg

Strider is an excellent side-scrolling platform / beat em up / shoot em up. Full of space commies.
