D&D Fantasy Football (Soccer) League

With the football season just around the corner, it's time once again to start up a fantasy league! As with last season, we'll use The Times Play the Game site (located here), as it offers one player - one team setup. There have been changes to the system this year, and we'll take advantage of the most important ones, offline allocation. But, more on that later...

If you are interested in joining post here in this thread, and then head over to the PTG site and join the league. The league details are as follows:

Name: PA / D&D Wangusliga
Pass: wang
Size: 15 (but I can increase or decrease the number of players at will)

Should you have any problems finding it or joining, shoot me a pm with your email address and I will send an invite through the system. For those who don't have much experience with football yet are curious, please feel free to join the league, as it will give you a perfect opportunity to be caught up in it. :)

ALLOCATION

So PTG has a choice of two allocation systems this season, the old automatic computer pick one from last year, and a new offline one. For those who took part last year, the automatic one turned out some head scratching results, so I've decided to set up the league with the new system. Under the new system, it's entirely up to us to pick how we will allocate players, but I have come up with a couple ideas (which are up for debate should you choose). So a little FAQ...

When will allocation begin?

With the season starting on the 16th of August, I've decided to set the previous week (the 3rd to the 19th) as our allocation time. That means all interested parties should be signed up by the 3rd of August.

How are we doing it?

We'll use the Snake system. I'll pull names out of a hat in order to get a number order, then we pick players in sequential order. In the second round we do it reverse sequential style.

Where will we do this?

Since we don't really have the ability to meet up and do this, we will use this thread for allocation. Starting on the 3rd we begin the pick sequence, and we take as long as we need. I've given us about a week, which I think should be sufficient... and if everybody keeps abreast of the thread it could go even faster.

I think that is about it for now, but I will add more info as I think of it. I'll try as best I can to keep track of things in the OP, and after a little discussion with everybody who joins we can firm up our dates and plans. Any questions, ask away...

I'm completely new to this, but it sounds like fun.

I'm in, if you don't mind.

The problem with that system is that it allows a player to be used by multiple teams. The PTG system has the advantage of one player can only be on one team... which personally I think is a better test.

So how did this go last time? The two guys who got ronaldo and fabregas romped away to the lead and no one else had a chance?

It went really well last time... and at least three of us were in contention right up until the end. I didn't have any really big names, except for Adebayor, and I managed to hold the top spot in the league up until the last month of the season. Sagna helped with that too...

The problem we had last season was the automatic allocation. You had to rank the players in order of importance to you, and then the computer would take over. I ended up with alot of chafe, and did alot to drop and pick up players throughout the season. Picked up some decent players after the January transfer window as well.

But that's why we are going with the offline allocation, it will allow us alot more control and will ensure we don't get somebody we completely don't want. Should make for some better balanced teams... though Ronaldo, Fabregas, Torres and Adebayor will go very quickly. There are alot of really solid performers around though, and the way the points are dished out means that you also have to think about your defenders and such... it's not all goals goals goals.

Ahhh Tav, it is fun. I'm totally stoked about the idea of the allocation, as it could be both a mad scramble for the stars and an in depth search for a good solid midling player. What I like most about PTG is that it forces you to keep tabs on teams and players that you normally wouldn't, as there is always a players that someone missed who turns out to be a solid performer.

Just so you get an idea of what you might end up with, this is my team from last season, after the final week:

    David James GK
    Javier Garrido LB
    Ricardo Carvalho CB
    Wilfred Bouma CB
    Alvaro Arbeloa RB
    Phil Jagielka DEF/GK SUB
    Martin Petrov LM
    Geremi CM
    Niko Kranjcar CM
    Sulley Ali Muntari RM
    Ryan Babel MID SUB
    Emmanuel Adebayor FOR
    Jermain Defoe FOR
    Elano Blumer FOR SUB
    Alex B
    Bacary Sagna B
    Benni McCarthy B
    Leighton Baines B
    Robert Green B
    Tim Cahill B

Nice little squad by the end, though I did have alot of ins and outs through last season. A couple of real stars, and alot of good performers...

Count me in, this should be fun. To all the nay sayers, if this is anything like other fantasy sports even if a person has Ronaldo it does not mean they automatically win the league. Fantasy leagues are won in the later rounds of the draft not the first round.

Giving this thread a needed bump. Only two people signed up right now, though others have expressed interest. It will be good times folks, and at the very least worth checking out. :)

These guys are really strict about team names. What's so offensive about Funkytown Fruit Fanciers?

Where can I found a run down on how fantasy leagues work?

I mean we could give it a try... but we need one more to make five, and then have to start the offline allocation immediately.

So yeah... one more player... COME ON!
