[LttP] Doom 3 - It's a game with some demons and stuff. Also, darkness.

Original Release - August 2004

The Plot: Foolish scientists open a gateway to another dimension and unspeakable horrors pour forth. Sound familiar? Well it's completely original because it takes place on Mars.

The Protagonist: You are a nameless marine, freshly arrived on the red planet.

The Gameplay: Doom 3 plays more like a Survival Horror title than a traditional FPS. The vast majority of the game plays out in locations that vary between poorly lit and not lit at all. You have a flashlight, but you can't use it while you have your weapon drawn. Run and gun gameplay takes a backseat to careful exploration and conservative combat .

So this came out 4 years ago. I didn't have a PC that could run it at the time so I didn't pay it much attention.
I picked it up last year as part of the id software pack on steam, but haven't gotten around to playing it until now.

I hate to be a wet blanket, but did you have to start a new thread? It's just going to be a bunch of videogame geeks saying "OLOL MONSTER CLOSETZ DUCK TAPE" :)

I'll say what I always say about this game: the Hell levels and expansion pack actually felt like Doom 1 and 2 for me. Not bad at all.

I maintain this was a better game than most thought, and did feel fairly like the first two.

The thing is, for me and a couple of other people I know it was awesomely scary.

Part of this is because they didn't play games this often, and I have never been even vaguely competent with KBaM. I can't hit shit. So this game actually becomes quite nasty if you aren't looking at it from a harcore gamer perspective, and even if you are it wasn't bad.

I think my biggest complaint wasn't the monster closets, but that they teased us with the interactive computers and lockers and such, and then never ended up doing much with them. I kept expecting some Deus Ex hacking or something, and I never got it. :(

Having some sequences where you have to extend a bridge and defend it at the same time would have been pretty cool.

Overall, though, yeah, I think the game got a bad rap because of the whole flashlight fiasco.

I chuckled at how the image the OP used looks slightly pixellated.
Almost like, when it debuted in '04, that shit was CUTTING EDGE DUDEZ (tm), and now just a short few years later: pixels.

ANYWAY. Played it on my OXBox (which was quite the feat all things considered) and I really enjoyed it as a straightforward shooter. There were moments when the darkness/atmosphere floored me. And I still say no-one gives the in-game OS/button pressing enough credit. They weren't two-state textures, but mini-interfaces. Slick.

Funny side story -- I played SIN Episodes: Emergence this weekend since it was $5 recently, and had to laugh at the horrid interfaces. It was a panel like in Doom3, but they had some terribly low-res giganto-buttons with a single background color and some average looking text. Really surprises me that no one has tried to replicate the crispness of Doom3's interactive buttons.

I liked Doom 3. Yeah, I went with the duct tape mod and the better gun sounds and a couple other things - and later the Pathways Into Darkness conversion - but it was still a solid shooter on its own. The part where you first get to Delta and the power's off is one of the more memorable scenes to me, and it had a lot of neat little touches, like near the start
with the desk clerk writing the email as you watch over his shoulder, typing out "I would like to add that the new recruit is extremely rude. He has been looking over my shoulder the entire time. Please stop." Or something like that.

Yeah it broke the Doom mold and flashlight juggling was stupid, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. And I agree the button interfaces were very well done. I mean it's a small detail, but it added a lot to the feel of the game.

The flashlight thing added alot of tension I though, but thats just me.

It was fucking scary in 2004, never beat it, and probably never will. It didn't really speak to me.

I swear there was a [LttP] tag in the title when I started this thread.
Anyway, I'm a few hours in now and having fun with it.
The only problem I've had so far is how long you stay disoriented from taking damage - you pretty much have to run away to regroup after taking a hit. Trying to stand ground results in being stunned until a split second before being hit and stunned again.

You have not yet reached the level to see what is right under your nose. Continue your journey.

Seriously though, I can't remember exactly, but I thought the expansion pack had more of an action/arcade feel like the old Doom 1 and 2. More dueling with tough bad guys, more enemies on the screen. It's rather short, at maybe 5 or 6 hours, so it's easy to knock out in a few afternoons.

I suggest you edit it in. As for the disorientation, you are not supposed to stand still while in a fight. It doesn't bring any bonuses.

I took this game with a grain of salt considering how much of a snore fest the rest of the series was (and indeed most console fps of those days), but the story development was actually quite good. Running into discs with chatter from some long dead scientist always added to the atmosphere.

Couple new-ish critters, double-barreled shotgun and this Hell artifact thing that gains more powers as you defeat bosses - slows down time, then boosts your damage, then makes you invulnerable. Also a pretty cool final level,
which teleports you into the Delta labs, which are constantly phasing in and out of reality, so the level switches between 'normal' and all red-tinted, bloodstained hellish stuff every ten seconds or so. It sounds like it'd be annoying, but I thought it was well done.

I loved this game, me and a friend both bought it on day one. We made my mom go and get it from EB for us which was like a town over, we were only 16 at the time and I couldn't drive yet. I remember we went to wal-mart to see if they were getting it and the guy said they had just got Doom 2 in, we laughed hysterically. He was like the biggest slack-jaw hick in the world

Oh no doubt, I just referred to that particular image the OP used.
It took me back as I remember staring at the first screens in... '03? (Couldn't have been 2002 ... When they first showed that more reptillian/gargoyle looking imp?)

My jaw fell through the floor, and kept punching through successive floors below, because, at the time, those graphics were INSANITY.

On topic: the flashlight wasn't an issue nor was the darkness, what irked me the most was how almost every enemy had that same puke-beige colour to their design. Make 'em red. Blue. Some sort of inky, green-ish black, oozing mess!

Outside of the revamped Pinky and the aforementioned Hell Knight, every other monster in the original (haven't played the expansions) looked kinda dull.

Gah, I'm really easily startled, so this is the sort of game I never play. I've been curious to see it played though. Does anyone know of any Doom 3 Let's Play videos or anything like that?

For example, you remember the noise it made when a random battle happened and the screen transitioned in FF7? Made me jump. Every time. Especially if I was on the pre-Meteor world map with the nice calm happy music playing.

I'd like to take this opportunity to state a few Truths about Doom 1 and 2, since I've played them for hundreds of hours, including during their prime.

    1. Doom 3 does not feel like the originals. Yes, there is a monster closet mechanic. Get over it. Only the Hell levels and expansion pack felt like D1/2 in any way.

    2. Painkiller and Serious Sam are not like Doom 1 and 2 at all.

Glad we had the chance to clear that up.

Man you should of played F.E.A.R. that game was like a million times worse. In fact I think I'm a little sick I always enjoyed watching people play scary games and get freaked out. The only game I could play was Condemned. It was scary...god damn jacked up crazy hobos. Although beating people to death with a locker door was awesome
