There's an episode of the Outer Limits where a guy finds a pathetically simple and cheap means of obtaining nearly limitless energy. This, of course, can be used as a weapon which would wipe out the human civilisation. The thrust of the episode was that we never hear from alien civilisations because they all inevitably discover this simple and all-too-powerful source of energy and blow themselves up.
