In celebration of my first decent digital music player, I'm hoping to load it with old favorites and new stuff. When going through my collection I remembered I dig electronica... but I'm hopelessly behind the times. I haven't really paid much attention to the scene since I lost access to electronica-loving co-workers and fellow students at the start of the decade.
So, what should I get? For reference, I like both driving beats and mellower stuff, though I don't like it when the DJ farts around with low tempo artsiness in the middle of something dancable, and I'm not big on trance. I do like creativity over repetitiveness, though. Some of the artists I've liked in the past are Daft Punk, Crystal Method, Fatboy Slim (though I wish the dude would quit repeating the same phrase over and over and over and over), Paul Okenfold, the soundtrack to Rez, Spy, Massive Attack, the Propellerheads, etc.
I'm not going to recommend a particular artist, but I do recommend the Beatport.com podcasts. Beatport is an online music store and their podcasts highlight up and coming artists as well as new tracks from existing artists. They've recently broken out their podcasts by subgenre (drum & bass, trance, etc) and I've found a lot of good stuff from there.
Feral on
every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.
Justice is the big new electronic group of the last few years. Their CD is great and worth buying. They are also awesome live.
This is a weird recommendation, but check out Hot Chip. They're not electronica per se, but they try to emulate that style with conventional instruments. YouTube "one pure thought" by them.
Check out Octopus Project. No words in their songs, but really sweet music.
My last recommendation is my favorite musician on earth, but he's, uh, not for everyone. YouTube Dan Deacon and check out Crystal Cat. If you like that even a little bit, pick up his CD Spiderman of the Rings. Every song on that CD is incredible, but you have to just go with it because the words are crazy free association nonsense and some people are too uptight to just enjoy it.

lol wut
But seriously, Justice is worth checking out. I love Ratatat although they're more of a rock/electronica hybrid. Surkin has a couple of good tracks. You said you weren't really into trance but I would still recommend Infected Mushroom (they're very creative and bizarre), DJ Tiesto and Benny Benassi.
Haha, yeah, I know some of the artists I listed get repetitive, but I can stand repetitive if done well. I'm just not into most of the far, far too many electronica artists that lay down a beat, let it run for three minutes, and call it a day.
Good suggestions. I'll give them all a try, yes Hot Chip too.
Keep them coming, it's been too long since I've been into this.
