Let me guess.....they can't talk to each other, but they have big ass green names that give away your position, and you actually know what their names are even though you can't speak their languages, to better facilitate bitching on the forums.

I honestly want it to be like DAoC where the name of the character was not over the head in RvR.
All it said was Norse "Realm Rank" or Highlander "Realm Rank".
Where the Realm Rank was things like Unicorn Knight or Skilvatken.

The only way to see the actual names was in the chat log. So you could see their name when you attacked them, and you could see it in death spam.

And when you targeted an enemy, all you got in the Target Window was the Race. So above their health bar it would just say "Norse" or "Highlander".

Even with that it was still pretty easy to determine who you were fighting, especially with kill spam. And you really got to know Guild Colors.

Discussions with the enemy should be had on forums and outside of the game. No talking to the enemy in game.
It honestly worked out rather well for DAoC. The IGN Vault and other forums that had Server forums were not that bad. Nothing approaching the level of WoW's forums.

You see, in Asheron's Call, the names did not appear unless you actually selected the person. This made things interesting since you couldn't see them coming from half a mile away.

They might not have had to put stealth in if they had taken into account no names appearing unless selected and inventive use of dyes. If the forests in the game are thick.....and I mean impressively so, if you picked the right shade of browns and greens you could dart from behind trees and fallen trunks and bushes.

As for talking in game, to my recollection of 4 years in AC, there was never any problem with people being able to communicate. The only flaw in this argument was Darktide, since that's where all the foul mouthed children gathered, but it made for an epic battle betwen the PK's and the Anti's.

It would not mean the end of the world if there was an -option- to allow cross faction communication, especially for the RP server when we know for a fact that the elevs know damn well what the other elves are saying, and that the chaos humans know the language of the empire humans, and by extension they can both understand dwarves.

I'm just greatly disappointed with their so called open RvR ruleset, and the fact that they dumb things down with the big floating names. If you can't hide and ambush your opponents (you know, like in war) it removes a couple interesting levels of gameplay and urgency about war supposedly being everywhere. Plus getting rid of the glowy names would -slightly- increase framerates.

It will never happen simply because it would be far too easy for someone to simply make a mod that puts the names right back on.

And for frame rate, you can disable them if you really want.

    Folks,

LOL. No, we're not finished, wish we were. We've still got a lot of work and testing left to do before we're ready to ship. One of the things that a lot of the writers lately have been saying is that they are rather surprised at how polished and deep the game feels and how, in comparison to some other MMORPGs at launch, how stable and playable the game is already. I think that's what Paul might have been referring to, if that quote was accurate, as he knows full well that we really couldn't ship the game today. Believe me, if I thought the game was ready to go out the door now I would be the first one to scream "Ship it" at the top of my lungs, take the studio out for a nice celebration and then prepare for the always interesting launch day.

As to when we are going to ship, well, we're still on target for our release date.

    Mark
    Folks,

FYI, just spoke to Paul and, as expected, Paul was not only misquoted but the interview does not reflect what Paul said to this guy nor the context in which Paul's answers were delivered. Here's a great example, Paul was asked directly by the writer, "If EA put a gun to your head, could you ship it today?" Paul's response was "If we had to, yes" which is the answer that any developer would give to that question and as the history of MMORPGs have shown, including DAoC shipping when it did because we almost out of money, when you have to ship, you ship. So, "If we had to, yes" became "WAR is finished, could ship today."

Sadly, this stuff happens all the time.

    Mark

No response to the Gamestop release date rumours?

Well, he hints at it.. but doesn't say it's false:
    Folks,

Yeah, I hate it when this sort of thing happens. When I spoke to Paul he felt really badly about how his words were taken way out of context. Obviously, Paul is a very straight-forward guy and when he saw how his responses were being misused by the writer, he was not a happy guy. He takes his job very seriously (which is one of the reasons he is so good at it) and this stuff doesn't make it any easier. You should have heard some of the other questions the guy asked him, it was pretty bad. Paul handled himself as a professional and did his best to answer the questions. Many years ago I had an Italian writer try pretty much the same thing as this guy tried with Paul. Let's us just say that my response was a little bit more, ahem, animated and interesting, especially for those around us.

In terms of me confirming a date whether it is September 18th, 23rd or even Halloween (one of my all time favorite holidays), don't try to read between the lines. Yes, we are getting close to announcing a firmer release date than Fall '08 but I've been hinting at that for weeks. However, as I've said elsewhere, the game is not yet finished and we still have a lot more work to do on it.

And as always, drum roll please, even now the date is set in mud. If we have to pull this game out of its scheduled release at the 11th hour, we will do that. We've worked too hard and too long to mess it up now by rushing it out the door. The game won't be perfect (no game is), it won't be finished (the truth is that no MMO/Mud type game is ever finished as I've said for years, finished = end of the road) but it will be great and ready for launch when it launches.

    Mark

He does directly quote a thread referring to that date... a thread saying that date is what Mythic gave to retailers as a target but not an official date. That post is here.

And in response to a thread asking, "If Mythic put all the cut content into a paid expansion, would you be angry?"
    Folks,

I would be very, very angry, how's that?

Now as to my reasoning. First, during the development process of most creative ventures, things get cut and changed. That happens in games, books, films, television, etc. Secondly, for examples, things such as scenes that are cut from a movie are then are put into a "Director's Cut" or "Special Edition" etc. I don't think that it is wrong for a filmmaker to cut things out of his/her own film in order to make the film great and then offer them on a special DVD. Now, I wish they would put them on the same DVD as the original film is on but I have no real problem with the practice. While some people may disagree, it is a widespread practice and one that I don't have any problem with morally, ethically, etc. Making a game, especially an MMO, is no different in that respect. We cut out things, change things, etc. during a development process and when the development process is three years long, well, even more can get cut and changed. However:

We have been talking about these classes and the cities for quite a while. And while I absolutely believe that we have the right, if we so choose, from every ethical, moral and legal perspective to cut them out totally or put them in the game in a paid expansion, that doesn't mean that we should do that. We've always tried to hold ourselves to a higher standard. No, we're not perfect, yes we make mistakes and yes, yes, yes we are also a business but just because you can do something doesn't always mean you should do something. In this case, what we want to do and what we will try our best to do is to make sure that if/when we bring back those classes and these cities (sorry for the if, don't read more into it, just being careful) that players will not have to buy them from us as part of a paid expansion but rather just part of the content updates that we did so well for DAoC.

And that's why I would be very angry because we tried to do something and for some reason(s) we couldn't make it happen. And that always pisses me off...

    Mark

Well.. let's take these as far out of context as we can, people. Is Warhammer coming to theaters in 2011?

And those playing in the closed beta... I want one of you to simply play SO much over the next several days that you have to wear a new shirt... if you catch my drift.

Reserve Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning and receive:

Open Beta Access: Be one of the first players to experience the glory of battle and the thrill of WAR! Open Beta will run from September 3, 2008 at 10am EST until September 12, 2008 at 10am EST. The Open Beta will level capped and content restricted.

Live Game Head Start: Reserve customers will get a 3-day head start on the battlefields of WAR. The Live Game Head Start begins on September 15, 2008 at 10am EST.

Bonus In-Game Items: Equip your characters for the journey to the frontlines with Rittenbach’s Portable Camp and Sentinel’s Amber Band.

Universal Fighting System Battle Deck: The Emperor Karl Franz and Tchar’zanek, dread Champion of Tzeentch, go head-to-head in this exclusive collectible card game deck from Fantasy Flight Games.

ONLINE/IN-STORE PICKUP CUSTOMERS: You will receive a code for the bonus items. Please provide a valid email address at time of purchase.

STORE CUSTOMERS: All bonus items will be available in store at time of reservation. Items available in store week of August 4. Please call ahead to confirm availability

So, a few things: Regular edition pre-order customers are going to get the same head start, and it looks like the open beta as well.

It's not clear whether the open beta is actually just that week or that CE customers get in earlier, while regular editions get in only that week. I'm a bit perturbed that head-start will be more crowded, as everyone kind of assumed that the head-start was exclusive to the people who shelled out $90 on faith alone, while the NDA was locked tight.

Edit: The dates have been removed.

It bothers me people are upset about the Open Beta also.

It makes no sense to expect Mythic to limit the OB.
Wouldn't they want as many people in the OB as possible?

If people paid extra for the privilege of the OB without knowing all the facts then that's just the consequences of making a decision without having all of the information.

The regular edition bonuses leave a salty taste in my mouth as a CE customer. You can walk into Gamestop right now (Edit: Actually, in a few days) and get them. They are not speculations.

The word "exclusive" was thrown around quite a bit. The term "before the raw recruits arrive" appeared more than once in the CE details.

It's not that I didn't expect a regular edition pre-order bonus to pop up (especially since they ran out of CEs), but it sucks that it is basically the same thing as the CEs.

You could sit here and say that it's speculation, but you can walk into Gamestop and pre-order the regular edition right now (Edit: Sorry, in a few days) and receive all the codes in person on the same day.

As far as Open Beta access is concerned, I didn't expect to be the only one let in. I still wouldn't be surprised if they ran a promotion with Fileplanet or IGN for it as well. It being only 1 week though is kind of a pisser.

I hear ya. I'm still keeping my pre-order (maybe because I had to pay up front? just maybe). I do like the shit that comes in the box, the extra quests, the extra heads, and just the simple fact that it's a way to support the game.

I just think it's a bad move that the regular editions get the same bonuses we do.

If the CE Open Beta is a few weeks before the Reg Open Beta, and the CE Head-start is as well, that would make things a bit more fair*.

No ad ever pretended that the open beta and early access were EXCLUSIVE to the CE. You still get, let's see... quests, titles, items, art book, figure... other stuff I don't remember right now... The more in open beta and the more in "head start" the merrier -- the few days/weeks that gives Mythic to smooth things out in panic mode before the real crush of regular release the better. In the long run, having a stable launch for the masses will be WAY better for you as a CE/hardcore/whatever gamer than a few day headstart in leveling. You won't even notice that in a couple weeks, but if launch is super-smooth and WAR gets an awesome rep from day one it will be incredible for teh community... vice versa for a buggy, laggy launch.

No ad ever pretended that the open beta and early access were EXCLUSIVE to the CE. You still get, let's see... quests, titles, items, art book, figure... other stuff I don't remember right now... But, yeah, anything you were promised you get, and anything that was exclusive to the CE remains so.

I know what you're saying. I'm not saying it's not fair that they also get the items. I'm not that selfish to pout about that.

    It's more like this:

If there were both editions to order at the same time, I would likely have just picked the regular edition.

    Well, here's the official word:

    Folks,

Okay, I'm a bit confused here. I've gone through our website, GOA's website and our press releases and based on what I've read there and here, let's start off with some basics:

    1) Characters will not roll over from the OB. Not a chance, prayer, etc. OB is for primarily the load testing of the game and not for people to level up their toons and then bring them over to the Head Start or into the game. Whoever is giving out their information is wrong.

    2) When we put up the websites for the CE, we separated the CE from the CE Pre-order program on purpose. Nowhere in the CE Pre-order program does it say that *only* CE Pre-orders will get the HS and the OB. There's even a line that says "All pre-order customers will receive one of the following items..." It also says a number of times in the same section the words "pre-order customers" and not "CE pre-order customers." We weren't trying to be clever, cute, devious, etc. but to simply covey the basics of the program. Apparently we may have needed to be even clearer than I thought we were being.

    3) In terms of the length of OB, the final length of it is still to be determined. Don't expect a 30 day OB or anything like that. We've never promised, hinted or even inferred that OB was going to be a long process, that's what our Beta is for. If we need a longer OB, then it will be longer. If a shorter one will suffice, that is fine by us.

    4) In terms of the Head Start, the length of the Head Start is still being discussed which is why we haven't posted anyway how long it will last.

    5) In terms of the Head Start as it pertains to the CE POs and the SE POs, our intention is that the length of the Head Start will not be the same. While we have never said that they would or wouldn't be the same, we do want to give some extra time to the CE POs.

    6) We also hope to make an announcement sometime before we go into OB about another bonus thing for our CE POs customers. I can't go into detail about it yet but it will also be seen as a nice little extra for the CE POs.

    7) In Europe, the plan is for the OB to invite the CE POs customers but the SE POs will not get a special invitation.

8 In terms of the whole "OMG, I wouldn't have bought the CE if I could get the HS/OB time with the regular PO" thing. If that's how you feel, no problem at all. Cancel your CE then and pre-order the regular game. If all the special items, librams, quests, heads, art book, graphic novel and miniature aren't worth the difference in price, either cancel your order or don't pre-order the CE (if you can still find a copy). Our CE has more useful in-game goodness than any other MMORPG. And the fact that the CE contains a very special miniature (that will not be reissued by GW and/or EA) along with all the other stuff, makes it, in our opinion, the best CE of any MMORPG to date. The fact that it is essentially sold out in NA and almost there in Europe this far before launch means that the players agree. And yes, the items/quests/etc. that are listed in the CE section of our website (as opposed to the Pre-Order Program) part of the webwite, will still only be for the CE and not the SE.

    9) In terms of why we didn't announce this sooner, well, we thought we were clear when we posted all the information. Apparently not, at least for some of you and that's why I'm here.

    10) In terms of the OB being for CE pre-orders only, well, that's a bit of nonsense. I've posted enough and I'seen enough people talk about the OB to know that most of you knew that OB wasn't for the CE people only.

    11) In terms of the OB, not everyone gets in now. It will still be limited access but both CE/SE Pre-order customers get a guaranteed slot as do our current beta testers.

Clarify this for me. If I pre-order WAR, regular edition, do I get the extra items and heads? That's all I'm interested in.

You get the camp and a ring. You don't get the special heads or the special quests that lead to more items. Above someone mentions an XP boosting item, but I've never heard of that.
