Where should I buy my blank DVDs?

Lord JezoLord Jezo Registered User regular
I have always just gone into Best Buy or Circuit City and bought whatever was on sale at the time but is there an online place that will be cheaper (after shipping) than doing it this way?

I have just run out of blank DVDs and now I am in need of more. Looking for something of decent quality. Maybe also pick up a few DLs if they still dont cost way more than they should.

I've always gotten Taiyo Yuden blanks from Amazon. Supposedly they're top quality, but take that with a grain of salt. Satan's link seems to sell them, too, in any case.

It's important to know what manufacturing facility a brand draws from. There are only (last I knew) five really good facilities that produced blank media. Memorex, Taiyo Yuden, Sony etc. all buy from these plants and brand it their own. I know Yuden is one of the best manufacturers, so their media is always highly rated. Read more here.

When buying Taiyo Yuden, take care to be sure you aren't getting fakes.

In terms of determining *which* blank DVD/CDs to buy...:

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia?order=Compatibility (questionable accuracy, since it's basically all anecdotal)

Well after looking at those links and then using a program found on that cd freaks site to identify the maker of the Sony ones I had been using for the past year and a half I sound that they were Taiyo Yuden discs, so I went to the store linked by Satan (I dont know how I feel about getting advice from the prince of darkness, but oh well) and ordered up a 100 pack of Taiyo Yuden (genuine?) and will hopefully be happy. These will be 8x premium quality, I never burn anything faster than 4x so it shouldn't be a problem.

Although for the past forever I have always bought whatever was cheapest and never knew anything about Taiyo Yuden anythings and was happy, so I suppose I should be at least as happy as that now.

The store I linked ships genuine TY stuff. There really hasn't been a lot of fake stuff falling through reputable stores in a couple years now, they got wise. I ordered all my stuff from there when I was burning upwards of 50 DVDs per week and rarely had any issues. Keep an eye out, they'll offer (at least used to) free shipping on the TY media once in a while.

TDK is really good as well. They only use one company for all their discs so the quality is always the same instead of playing Russian rulete. Memorex, don't buy their duel layer DVDs.

Ugh, Memorex DLs are awful. I bought a 15-pack because it was cheap, burned 6 straight coasters, got pissed and tossed the rest. Stick to non-India Verbatims.

For SLs, if you have a Costco around they have Buy 1 Get 1 on 100-pk Sony cake boxes. It comes out to $30 for 200 discs.

I think I read somewhere that Taiyo Yuden discs are supposed to last at least 100 years before they start to degrade. Not sure if there is any truth to that though.
