Hi there everyone, I just moved to a new place, a dorm in Chicago, and after locking my door from the inside, I find I am unable to get out of my room. I have no phone. I have internet, and am not sure if it's just me being retarded, or if there is a specific way to open the door. It's a long gray metal handle, with a lock in the middle that turns between horizontal and Vertical. I have removed the door handle on more than one occasion and was unable to figure out a way to open the door. Any suggestions on why this may be happening?
Pound on the door until someone responds, have them try to open it from the outside, then get ahold of building maintenance to have them fix it.
If they don't have someone out there within a day, call again. Give them another day, then call the campus fire marshal if it's not fixed (I would be very surprised if it weren't).
This is a free pass to be an action hero. Kick down the door!
Don't do this until you have exhausted ALL other options. If it DOES come to this, be sure to use a side kick -- dominant foot in front, and shift your body weight forward like you're "falling through" the door as you kick -- and aim right below the doorknob.
Is it one of those push-button locks? I'm pretty sure you have to make line on the "button" vertical (or whatever it isn't, now), by pushing it inward and turning, and then turn the handle. If that doesn't work, usually it's just a matter of jostling the handle and fiddling with the lock. Turning, twisting, pushing the lock and the handle.
This happened to a friend of mine. She didn't have a cell so she had to wait for her neighbors to hear her banging. They got the RA who called her boss and she ended up being stuck for about 12 hours after her RA was notified before maintenance finally came and got her out. I don't know why it took so long but I know she was not happy. Do you want one of us to call your RA or something?

Hmmm, i had an experience like this. It was a beautiful, sunny day in London and I decided to let some air in through the front door. Later I decided to read a book in the courtyard out back. At some point in time the draft set up by the two outside open doors caused the courtyard one to shut. With the deadlock on and me with no keys. The only way out was jumping over a series of large walls and other courtyards. So no dice there either. Three hours later I was rescued by a returning housemate who I must have scared the fuck out of as I was loitering outside the courtyard door when he opened.

another vote for action hero.
Try turning the handle upwards as far as it will go without, you know, breaking it. Then fiddle with the latch.
