The Gamer's dilema: Where to stash it?

AthenorAthenor Battle Hardened OptimistThe Skies of HiigaraRegistered User regular
edited September 2006 in Critical Failures
So. You're a video gamer. You have your consoles all neat and tidy, your games all in DVD cases. You're golden.

... But what if you are a roleplayer, card gamer, or wargamer? How do you store your stuff?

Do you keep it all in easy access, on (reinforced) shelves?

Do you use plano boxes lined with foam? And if so, how many per case?

What do you use for card boxes?

Do you sleeve your cards/supplies, or leave them bare?

I figured that as a forum dedicated to gamers, one of the best threads would be a general-purpose storage and care thread. It's something we've all thought about at some point or another -- with the ever-escalating costs of gaming, these books are becoming investments. I know I own at least 50 roleplaying books alone, nevermind my Magic and L5R collection.

So I just want to hear about it all.. Heck, I would love to know how you guys store your plastic war minis versus your metal ones, or your paints, or your character sheets! Just to get the discussion flowing...

For old FASA books you're really best off just removing the covers, three-hole punching 'em, and throwing 'em in a bigass binder. Better that then losing pages.

I keep my cars sprawled out in a floor and in a large, cardboard box.

The loved cards are on my dresser or in deck packages.

    That's right. I play favorites.

I have shoebox with my magic cards, a CD case for my PC games, all of NES/SNES/N64 get rough treatment in a smallish basket, my PNP games are all stacked on top of my desk (not the computer desk, though). Cleanliness is not relavent!

This seems to be a common trend of any gamer's house I've walked into... The roleplaying books are generally stacked in a haphazard way, but in a way tha makes quick reference easy. Dewey be damned, eh?

My personal stash is kept in one bookshelf and an enormous hope chest that's protected from the light.

I have a finished basement with several bookshelves and other assorted cabinets. My house is a Geek Mecca. I should post pictures once we get everything completely organized.

Right now, half my books are in unorganized stacks on the table because I'm reorganizing the shelves. That and we're waiting on our free 27" tv so we can hook up all the old consoles to it down there.

And you guys thought old people were boring.

I have heavy duty shelves for my paint in progress mini's. I store all minis both metal and plastic in pistol cases for transport and general storage. I have built a large worktop for paint and storage of all my paints as well as my air compressor.

I keep my RPG books on a shelf, and my dice on a desk/table.

My old Star Wars CCG cards are in a crappy plastic container because I got tired of putting them in sheets. The few VS. cards I have are in a cardboard box. The ten or so 40k models I have are in a box with the paint and brushes and such.

I keep my HeroClix in a tackle box. The assorted D&D and Star Wars minis are on a shelf.

There's actually a pretty thriving trade going on in cases designed for carrying miniatures.

It's a fucking racket is what it is. They're insanely expensive.

miniature and card game cases don't really count, due to their portability and the fact that a lot of people don't play them at home all the time, they need storage. I was talking more about board games / other bigger stuff.

The big thing I run into is.. well.. roleplaying game books are BIG.

Your average bookshelf.. Hell, even a reinforced bookshelf.. is going to sag, if not worse, under the weight of them. And with the move towards more and more books being published in hardcover, the problem's getting worse.

Once a year, flip the shelf over.

    Those aren't badly priced. =)

I use a few Plano boxes, myself. Only problem is they are danged heavy for the minis they contain.

I have my Books on a bookshelf (duh) my cards in piles with rubber bands around them in a drawer and for my miniatures I bought a stereo cabinet (Glass doors, very snazzy) and made it into a display cabinet.

Now if I could figure out a good place to store terrain that would be awesome. Because that shit takes up so much room.

My Magic cards are stored in a number of boxes and containers, all designed to hold cards. I only own a few Mage books, but any other RPG books I own would be stored just like they are: on my bookshelf.

I'm not exactly sure where I'll store my 40k miniatures once I get done assembling and painting them. I'll probably end up buying some foam and cutting out my own pattern to store them inside a box of some sort.

I always thought the true Gamer's Dilemma was

"I met a girl and she really likes me. How do I tell her about MY DARKER SIDE?"

I like to call it that rather than say "How do I tell her that I'm a dork who rolls dice to kill things and I have at least one friend who answers to the name of a former character?"

Mind you, I'm married, so I already know the answer to this dilemma.

    The answer is BRAINWASHING.

My shelf was nearing it's breaking point, so I reinforced it by having it rest on even more sourcebooks stacked on the shelf below it. :(

I made a HUGE box out of plywood,

It has shelves and a lift out organizer that I put my Dice, Dragon Tears, and Life Counters in. The Shelves are filled with Deck Boxes (the 1" long ones) and are all organized by color, and edition. (Rares are in a Binder only uncommons and commons in the box) It may way 300 pds but it keeps everything organized and Ive got a dolly if i need to move it.

When I bought my house, we got all of the old furniture included with it. Most we sold or threw away, but I ended up keeping an antique armoire and fitting it with shelves. All of my boardgames and roleplaying books are in there. Though I'm running out of room.

My board games (current count...430-ish) are on five 6-foot tall bookshelves in the living room. And in the hall closet. And on the top shelves of my master bedroom walk-in closet. The Crokinole board (an "Eagle" model, in burgundy, from www.crokinole.com) sits in the office, waiting for the office to get remodeled, so it can get properly wall-mounted.

~25,000 M:tG cards are in five cardboard long boxes, specifically made for storing cards. Plus a couple long-boxes full of ready-to-play decks. All are stored on the bottm 2 shelves of the aforementioned hall closet, along with 4,000 or so Mythos CCG cards, and a couple thousand Netrunner cards.

Heroscape is stored in 6 large plastic tubs of varying sizes. Figures (at least one of each unique, and at least three of every common squad) in one long "under bed" size storage bin; 24- and 7-hex terrain pieces (from 6 master sets) in another large bin; trees (from 6 RtFF sets), ruins, icebergs, (basically everything that gets placed "on top" of terrain) in it's own large bin; ice, lava, water, raods in a medium-size bin; and one medium-size tub each for 1-, 2-, and 3-hex terrain pieces. All of which stored in top shelves of master suite walk-in closet.

Another large tub full of Star Wars Attacktix figs is in there, too.

And I think I have a very large Craftsman tool box (with 5 sliding drawers), full of ~1,000 "alpha" Mage Knight figs, tucked away somewhere, too. I think they're in a closet off the home theater room, along with a couple boxes full of Crossbows & Catpults stuff.

3E D&D (and D20 fantasy) books are on a bookshelf in the office, along with a couple years worth of Dungeon and Dragon magazines, Knights of the Dinner Table, and a half dozen Grimtooth's Traps books from back in the day. I also have two huge boxes full of old 1st edition D&D books, modules, and magazines up in the attic.

I have my cards in a rubber made container.

Walmart sells decent pistol cases for 8 bucks during hunting season. I usually buy the six of seven they have and sell them to friends I know are looking for more space, at cost.

You can usually pick up these sorts of things off eBay for a song. I got an official GW carrying case for about $18.

I should post pics of my little painting area. It's currently overflowing with the baby stuff that doesn't fit in the other rooms, but I think it's a pretty sweet setup. I even have one of those dorky paint carousel thingies.

As for PNP books and boardgames, I built an adjustable bookcase a few years back. The shelves shift around to make room for oversized boxes and books.

I only have two D&D books, the complete psionics and the complete fighters book from 2nd edition. Those are on a bookshelf along with all my videogames. The comic books (which everyone inevitably starts buying when you play magic or D&D at a store once a week) are on the bottom of a bookshelf, very well hidden because of how tiny they are.

The type 2 magic cards and spice girls cards (yeah you read that right) are in a drawer and not type 2 cards are hidden in a closet behind the table I pull out to play magic in my room.
